A Week of Gretzky

From NHL.com

imageOn August 9, 1988, a day that changed the game, Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers to the lowly Los Angeles Kings.  The trade changed the fortunes of the Kings, was a driving force for National Hockey League expansion into the ‘Sun Belt’, and generated extensive growth of the game at the grassroots level in “non-traditional” hockey markets.

To commemorate the anniversary, The NHL Network will highlight its “Wayne Gretzky Week” programming by presenting a one-hour special that features exclusive interviews with Gretzky, former Oilers owner Peter Pocklington and former Kings’ owner Bruce McNall, among others, at 9 p.m., ET, on Wednesday, August 6. A VNR of the interview with Gretzky will be provided Tuesday.

Here is the complete NHL Network schedule of Gretzky-related programming for next week:

New Spots For NHL Network

from BrandWeek,

The fledgling NHL Network, which last month launched in the U.S., will break a campaign targeting core fans who live and breathe hockey as well as fringe fans not yet aware that the 24/7 network is up and running.

The spots, the first for NHL Network from Cenergy Communications, East Aurora, N.Y., will juxtapose nonstop action from the 1950s and 1960s with that from the 2007-08 campaign. One spot begins with black-and-white footage of a game between the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens purposely made to look as if it was being viewed on a TV screen with really bad reception.

Reviewing The NHL Network

from Neil Best at Newsday,

After six years on Canadian TV, the NHL Network launched in the United States, built around a nightly wrap-up show called “NHL On the Fly” with game highlights so extensive that even a Blue Jackets-Coyotes contest is treated as if, well, people actually care.

Which is the point, of course. The channel is for those who really, really care, and want to see stuff from highlights to features to live games to oldies such as yesterday’s Islanders-Oilers tilt from 1981.

NHL Network In The USA

According to the reports on Versus during the Ducks/Kings game yesterday, the NHL Network should begin popping up on carriers in the USA today.

Feel free to comment here and we also have a thread in the KK Forum regarding this too.

added 10:36am, via Tripp Mickle at SportsBusiness Journal (paid sub.),

Sources with the three biggest cable operators, Comcast, Time Warner and Cox, as well as satellite operator DirecTV say they are still negotiating to carry the network, and expect to complete a deal soon. EchoStar wasn’t available for comment, though it appears likely that Dish Network is close to a deal, as well, since its customer service representatives were selling the NHL Center Ice package last week.

Putting the NHL Network on a sports tier would follow a similar strategy to NBA TV, which accepted digital sports tier carriage several years ago. The NBA recently has been expressing disappointment about the lack of cable subscribers that get sports tiers. NBA TV is in less than 10 million homes.

To combat these poor penetration rates, NHL Network plans to make much of its programming available on demand, including some live programming and archived content. That would give all digital cable subscribers access to NHL Network content.

Canada vs. USA / NHL Network In The USA

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,

Despite Canada’s domination of the junior hockey Super Series, the tournament was a success at the gate and on television.

The event worked so well that Hockey Canada wants to do it again, or at least is looking into reprising the tournament next summer, with Canada playing the United States.
