Nathan Beaulieu And The Buffalo Sabres Agree To A Two-Year Contract

BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 31, 2017) --- The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has signed defenseman Nathan Beaulieu to a two-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $2.4 million.

A first-round pick (17th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft, Beaulieu (6’2”, 205 lbs., 12/5/1992) was acquired by the Sabres in June after the defenseman turned in career-high totals in games played (74), goals (4), assists (24) and points (28) during his fifth NHL season with the Montreal Canadiens in 2016-17.

Beaulieu has appeared in 225 career NHL regular-season games, recording 60 points (7+53) and a plus-19 rating. The Strathroy, Ontario native has added four points in 17 career playoff games with the Canadiens.

On The Nathan Beaulieu Trade

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,

Jason Botterill's reconstruction of the Buffalo Sabres' defense perhaps took a first step Saturday afternoon as the team's new general manger acquired veteran blueliner Nathan Beaulieu from the Montreal Canadiens for a third-round pick in next week's NHL draft.

The Sabres, of course, could have made the deal to leave Beaulieu unprotected and have Vegas take him off their hands instead one of their returning players they would like to keep.

Still, Beaulieu would be an interesting addition to Buffalo's left side on D, allowing the Sabres more flexibility and perhaps the ability to start Brendan Guhle in the minors next season

Video- Nick Foligno Fight With Nathan Beaulieu

via Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,

There were questions after the game about whether Beaulieu should have returned to the game. But coach Michel Therrien said the defenceman went through the NHL’s concussion protocol between the second and third periods.

“I wasn’t surprised (to see him back),” said Subban. “He was fine on the ice. I think kind of when he got hit he was kind of already going back, falling back, He was fine on the ice, he was flying out there.”

Weise said Foligno showed restraint when he held up on a punch after tagging Beaulieu with a solid right.

“That’s pretty good respect there,” said Weise. “Foligno’s a hard-nosed guy. I think he kind of let up on him when he went down there. He’s a little more undercover tough than a lot of guys think. I fought him a few times, he’s a tough guy.

“That was huge for Bo stepping in there. He’s done that a couple of times this year,” added Weise. “That gets a huge boost and a lot of respect in our locker room.”
