A release from the Edmonton Oilers,
The Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Mikko Koskinen to a three-year contract extension, with a $4,500,000 AAV (average annual value) through the 2021-22 season.
Koskinen, 30, is in his first season with the Oilers and leads the team with 14 wins, a 2.78, a .911 SV% and three shutouts. He is one of 19 goaltenders in NHL history to record two shutouts in his first three starts for his new team.
Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Peter Chiarelli says, “We are excited to have signed Mikko to a three-year contract extension through the 2022 season. Mikko has a lot of experience as a number one goalie and has performed well both internationally and for our club.”
A 6’7”, 202-pound goaltender, Koskinen joined the Oilers after five seasons in the
Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

Another Win For The Edmonton Oilers And Mikko Koskinen

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,
Back home in Vantaa, they call him ‘Kolmen Metrin Koskinen.’
That’s Finnish for ‘The Three Metres of Koskinen.’
Today, the six-foot-seven Mikko Koskinen — who left the National Hockey League eight seasons ago after a cup of coffee with the New York Islanders — is being measured in feats.
First, a 5-3 win in Nashville that snapped an Oilers losing streak to the Preds stretching over four years and 13 games, and now a 40-save, 4-0 shutout of the Chicago Blackhawks that puts his 7-4-1 Oilers right back on track.
Koskinen left an Islanders team that housed names like Dwayne Roloson and Doug Weight for a career that settled in St. Petersburg of the KHL, where he played with names like Ilya Kovalchuk, Artemi Panarin and, last season, Pavel Datsyuk.
“I am seven or eight years older. That makes a big difference,” he said. “Maybe the biggest thing is, I grew up a little as a human being. That’s the biggest change.

Breaking Down the Goaltending Situation on Long Island

The three candidates to start this season:
Rick DiPietro-Last season was an injury shortened season for DiPietro and when he did play he put up very bloated stats with an .886 save percentage and a 3.44 goals against. DiPietro is by no means the anointed starter for the Islanders-putting aside his huge long-term contract. DiPietro better look out because if he is outperformed in camp by both Montoya and Nabokov, I think there is a strong possibility that he won’t even be on the team to start the season. The Islanders need to do what’s best for the team here and if they have two better goalies who are performing, they don’t need to keep DiPietro in the NHL just because of his 15 year, $67.5 million contract.

As most of you know, some fans from some city in Pennsylvania haven’t taken very well to the fact of an organized fan gathering on Friday night, August 19th at Champions on Long Island.
First off, let me discuss what this gathering is for. The official invite page with a summary of the event can be found here. The aim and purpose of this party is to gather Islanders fans who are craving for hockey and can’t wait the 55 more days until the season starts.
