Mike Komisarek Joins The Devils With An Unsigned Tryout
by Paul on 09/15/14 at 08:51 AM ET
Comments (1)
via Rich Chere of NJ Advance Media,
In yet another late surprise, the Devils have invited defenseman Mike Komisarek to training camp as an unsigned tryout.
Komisarek joins Scott Gomez, Ruslan Fedotenko, Tomas Kaberle and Jordin Tootoo with PTO deals.
Gomez will wear No. 28 in training camp; Komisarek was given 72; Tootoo 74; Fedotenko 76 and Kaberle 47.
Komisarek, who played 32 games for the Carolina Hurricans last season (no goals, 4 assists, 14 penalty minutes), is a 6-4, 235-pound defenseman from Wes Islip, N.Y. He is 32.

Komisarek On His Time With The Leafs
by Paul on 07/09/13 at 04:26 PM ET
Comments (0)
from TSN,
Speaking with Bryan Hayes and Jeff O'Neill on Leafs Lunch, Tuesday on TSN 1050, Komisarek said he does not regret the decision to come to Toronto, but wished things would have played out differently.
"It was definitely a learning experience, but I think I'm better for it today – going through those challenges, those ups and downs the last couple of years," Komisarek said. "…And I'm looking to have a fresh start in Carolina and bouncing back."
The 31-year-old, who had the final year on his five-year, $22.5 million contract bought out by the Leafs on July 2, said that things seemed to snowball right from the outset of his time in Toronto and he was never able to get comfortable in his surroundings.
"I never got out on the right foot (winning just one of the first 13 games)…and it never caught on from there, then the media starts getting on you and the fans start getting on you," Komisarek said. "But looking back on that decision, this is the place where I wanted to come and turn things around and get into the playoffs and be a key part of it and it didn't work out."

Another Anonymous Report
by Paul on 03/03/13 at 04:00 PM ET
Comments (0)
from TSN,
Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek addressed a report out of St. Louis this weekend that suggested that he would welcome a trade out of Toronto.
Andy Strickland, a St. Louis-based reporter, tweeted on Saturday, "Mike Komisarek gave #Leafs a list of 12 teams he'd accept a trade to but I'm told he'd pretty much accept a trade anywhere. Wants to play."
Komisarek, who has been a healthy scratch for the past 14 games, discussed the report with the media on Sunday.
"I'm not going to be commenting on what someone in St. Louis said so I don't even know the guy or why he said that," said Komisarek. "So I know the media types will like to say, 'A report, an anonymous report,' I'm curious to see where you guys get your stuff. That's all I can say at this time."

Leafs Have No Plans To Cut Komisarek
by Paul on 09/29/11 at 08:56 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Terry Koshan of Leafs Now at the Toronto Sun,
The Maple Leafs will make a handful of final cuts before their regular-season opener on Oct. 6.
Defenceman Mike Komisarek won’t be among them.
There had been talk through last season and during the summer that the Leafs should bury the contract of Komisarek in the minors.
The 29-year-old will cost the Leafs a salary cap hit of $4.5 million US for each of the next three seasons. In his first two years with the Leafs, Komisarek struggled.
But a new training regimen during the off-season has resulted in a quicker Komisarek in the exhibition games. Leafs coach Ron Wilson and general manager Brian Burke have made it fairly clear this week that Komisarek will not be going to the Marlies.

What’s Happened To Komisarek?
by Paul on 03/22/11 at 11:00 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
What happened to the Mike Komisarek that the Leafs invested $22.5 million in, which at the time represented the largest and longest contract given to any Toronto player by Brian Burke?
What happened to him?
“I wish I knew the answer completely,” said Guy Carbonneau, who coached Komisarek when he played his best hockey with the Montreal Canadiens. “He’s a good guy who cares and he hates to lose. I feel for him.
“Early on, when I got the job (in Montreal) we worked with him a lot about not trying to be too aggressive. For some players to play better, they have to do more. With Mike, he has to do less. We worked on that with him. Sometimes he wanted to do everything, make the big hits, change the game, but he’d put himself out of the play to do it. We worked a lot on staying in the middle instead of chasing the game. When he did that, he was a very good defenceman for us.”
But now, maybe a loss of confidence, maybe a lack of belief from the coaching staff, maybe it has been Komisarek’s inability to settle down on the ice. When he plays, it’s fifth or sixth defenceman ice, which is difficult to swallow when he is being paid first or second defenceman money.

from the web staff at Sportsnet.ca:
Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek is expected to miss 7-10 days after hurting his finger in a fight Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Komisarek dropped the gloves twice in the game, fighting Penguins winger Arron Asham in the second period and then facing off with Michael Rupp in the third. A clearly frustrated Komisarek was a minus-2 as the Leafs lost the game 5-2.

Komisarek Needs To Find His Identity
by Paul on 09/18/10 at 11:28 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail,
And so once again the trumpet call to truculence is sounding, on this particular morning cutting its way through the coughing and random expectorating of fluids and clichés that signal Toronto Maple Leafs training camp physicals.
It is to be hoped that this season Mike Komisarek can filter some of the nonsense out. There is an unnerving inevitability to Komisarek, whose lost first year of a five-year, $22.5-million (U.S.) contract ended in February with shoulder surgery and left him with no goals, four assists and 40 penalty minutes to show for 34 games. A seventh overall pick in 2001, he has the size and attitude that suggests he’s at home in the hurly burly of the game.
At times with the Montreal Canadiens, his former team, there were glimpses of offensive awareness. But here’s the thing: watching Komisarek wade into the thick of things or line up an opponent is cringe-inducing, because too often he’s the movable force or the movable object. That’s what happened with the Canadiens, when he was beaten mercilessly by Milan Lucic in a fight in November, 2008, injuring his shoulder, then targeted during the 2009 playoffs by Lucic again and also Zdeno Chara.

Komisarek’s Season May Be Over
by Paul on 02/02/10 at 03:55 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Sean Fitz-Gerald of the CP at the Globe and Mail,
Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek is facing the possibility of having his season come to a premature end, with his immediate future hinging on another meeting with medical personnel Wednesday.
The 28-year-old has been sidelined since Jan. 2 with an undisclosed upper-body injury, which has been widely reported as a shoulder. His spot on the U.S. Olympic team is also hanging in the balance.
“I’ve tried not to think too much about it,” Komisarek said Tuesday. “If you dwell too much on something like that, you sort of lose track of the focus and what you need to be doing. I’ve been working hard with the strength coach and been talking with the doctors a lot, doing exactly what I need to do to get back.”
He acknowledged the possibility of having to end his season.

Komisarek Doubtful For Team USA
by Paul on 01/31/10 at 12:10 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star,
Mike Komisarek received some unfortunate news Saturday night that will almost certainly end his hopes of competing in the Vancouver Olympics with Team USA.
The big Leafs defenceman’s injured shoulder will keep him sidelined up to another seven days – a span that will push him past a deadline to prepare for the Games….
Burke, meanwhile, has several choices to replace Komisarek.
Candidates include Pittsburgh’s Alex Goligoski, Anaheim’s Ryan Whitney, Atlanta’s teenage blueliner Zach Bogosian and Carolina’s Tim Gleason.

Komisarek May Not Be Ready For The Olympics
by Paul on 01/25/10 at 05:24 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Jonas Siegel of 640am,
Mike Komisarek’s availability for the upcoming Vancouver Olympics might be in jeopardy.
The 27-year-old defenseman is still sidelined from a mysterious upper-body injury (suspected shoulder) and while he might be ready to return on Saturday, his status for the United States Olympic team in Vancouver isn’t quite clear.
“[Tuesday] is three weeks to our first game,” Ron Wilson said of the American team. “If you take the one week away, he has I’d say a week to feel comfortable. If he’s not we’d have to make other plans for the Olympics.”
“I’m not going to put his career at risk. And we’re not going to risk his future with the Leafs for a two-week Olympic thing either.”

Komisarek Will Return With Fun Attitude
by Paul on 11/30/09 at 11:30 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,
Hockey players don’t often experience the luxury of getting a do-over in the midst of a rigorous season.
But Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek will, and he has no plans to waste the opportunity.
The Leafs’ big catch on the free-agent market last summer after he was lured from the arch-rival Montreal Canadiens with a five-year, $22.5-million US contract, Komisarek wants to erase from his memory his first 16 games in a Leafs uniform. His next Toronto chapter will begin tonight, when he is slated to return to the lineup against the Buffalo Sabres after a small quadriceps tear kept him out nearly three weeks.
“It was good to take a step back and re-evaluate,” Komisarek said. “You can’t change what has happened. It’s a fresh start, a clean sheet, and forget about what has happened.
“It doesn’t matter what it was. I don’t know—trying to make an impact, trying to make your presence felt, trying to do too much. I would not say it was one exact thing. I have to simplify my game and, most importantly, try to have some fun.”

New Look For Leafs Defense
by Paul on 08/31/09 at 09:25 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun,
As an American, why not try a team in his homeland, especially since there were ample suitors? Only Original Six franchises for this guy?
“I had opportunities to go elsewhere, markets where hockey may not be the number one sport,” Komisarek said in a telephone interview from his off-season home in Long Island, N.Y.
“But I sort of shied away from playing in a non-traditional market. It’s a unique situation to play in such a hockey hotbed with everything that goes with it, but it’s something I wanted a lot. I can’t wait for the opportunity to get up there and help get that team back to the playoffs.”
Komisarek and Francois Beauchemin, a Stanley Cup winner with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007, figure to be the cornerstones of a rebuilt and strengthened Leafs defence, the most fruitful harvest from a busy off-season for general manager Brian Burke.

Habs Fans React To Komisarek Signing With Toronto
by Paul on 07/03/09 at 11:16 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,
A few suggested that Habs heavyweight Georges Laraque should be instructed - ordered, even - to pummel Komisarek, that despicable traitor, during the new Leaf’s first shift against his old team.
A few deleted comments indelicately questioned the marital status of Komisarek’s parents upon his birth, or suggested that he engage in an activity that is anatomically impossible.
Loyalty to a hockey club is a nearly extinct species in this world of free-agency, with players often short- or medium-term mercenaries who lace up for the team writing the biggest cheque.
Many Montreal fans seem to believe it’s almost acceptable - almost - to leave the Canadiens and sign with most any other team when their status gives them occasion to freely test the market. Just don’t make that new team Toronto or, perhaps, Boston.

The Best Dman Available

from Pierre LeBrun or ESPN,
Now that Jay Bouwmeester is off the market, it’s nice to be Mike Komisarek, right?
For my money, he’s the best blueliner available, although more of a defensive banger than an offensive force like Bouwmeester.
“It certainly gives a little more clarity to the market place having him there [Bouwmeester sign in Calgary],” Komisarek’s agent, Matt Keator, told ESPN.com Wednesday morning. “But there’s still other good defensemen out there like [Mattias] Ohlund and others. So Mike isn’t the only one out there.”

Komisarek Value Dropping
by Paul on 05/04/09 at 06:00 PM ET

from Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated,
Florida defenseman Jay Bouwmeester figures to break the bank when he becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. So, what about the second-most coveted free-agent defenseman: Montreal’s Mike Komisarek?
According to an NHL team executive, his organization initially viewed the right-side blueliner as a $6 million player but downgraded him slightly after his mediocre season. One problem is the rugged Komisarek brings virtually no offense into the equation. He is an upgrade over Scott Hannan, who signed a four-year, $18 million contract with Colorado in 2007, but with the salary cap poised to shrink in 2010-11, Komisarek might be worth closer to $5 million annually.

Komisarek Responds To Eye-Gouging Remark
by Paul on 04/18/09 at 12:09 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
Mike Komisarek is not one of the Three Stooges.
The gritty Montreal Canadiens defenceman wants to make that clear to anyone who claims he gouged the eye of Boston Bruins’ Matt Hunwick after the final horn on Thursday night.
Informed that Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli had made that allegation and requested that the league review the incident, Komisarek broke into a sarcastic grin, the type that implied the message: “You’ve got to be (expletive) kidding me.”
On the record, Komisarek’s language was not quite as vulgar. But his response to Chiarelli was just as direct.
“It’s a bit of a ridiculous statement,” Komisarek said. “It’s the playoffs. Face-washes happen on every second shift in the playoffs. I don’t know if the kid (Hunwick) has soft skin. (But) I’m not Larry, Moe or Curly. I’m not trying to poke anyone’s eye out.”

Komisarek Takes His Hits
by Alanah McGinley on 03/11/08 at 04:00 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Pat Hickey at The Gazette,
“It’s not a glamorous thing,” Komisarek said of his style. “It’s blocking shots, hitting guys, but it’s something I enjoy doing. Like I said, it’s not glamorous, but it’s effective and it’s something my team needs me to do.
“It’s using this body for trying to get in the way, breaking up plays, blocking shots. Making guys on the other team pay the price and taking away the will (from opponents) to play and compete.”
There’s a price for all this. While Komisarek has proved durable and hasn’t missed a game this season, he has collected more than his share of bumps, bruises and stitches. But “they sure hurt less when you win,” he said.

They are stars in the Canadiens’ constellation, but at home they are a couple of 20-somethings who live five minutes from each other in Huntington, guys who work out together all summer, visit each other’s families and fade into the neighborhoods.
“I could wear my jersey out and no one will know who I am,” Komisarek said.
People will know who he and Higgins are Tuesday, when they are back home on Long Island for a game against the Islanders. Amid Montreal’s huge road turnout of fans, a good swath of Nassau Coliseum will be full of their fans, family and friends.
