How Will The Ottawa Senators Handle The Return Of Mike Hoffman Tonight?

from Ian Mendes of TSN,

So far this season, the Senators have gone out of their way to acknowledge players who were traded away as part of the rebuilding process that started around the trade deadline last season. When the Los Angeles Kings visited town last month, both Dion Phaneuf and Nate Thompson were saluted with a ‘Welcome Back’ message on the big screen.

But on Monday night, the Senators might have a conundrum on their hands as Mike Hoffman makes his first appearance at the Canadian Tire Centre wearing the colours of the Florida Panthers.

The Hoffman-Senators divorce was one of the most awkward and messy departures between an athlete and NHL team in recent memory. Hoffman was caught in a situation that saw his long-time girlfriend, Monika Caryk, accused of orchestrating a cyberbullying attack on captain Erik Karlsson and his wife Melinda.

It was a salacious storyline, more fitting of a soap opera than an NHL dressing room. It became obvious the Senators needed to move on from either Hoffman and/or Karlsson – and in the end, both players were traded away. But there was a three-month window where Karlsson was still a member of the Senators after Hoffman was traded and it became clear the organization felt like Hoffman was the one who had to leave.

I Don’t Even Have A Headline For This

from Shaamini Yogaretnam of the Ottawa Citizen,

Melinda Karlsson has filed an order of protection against the longtime girlfriend of Senators forward Mike Hoffman — alleging a campaign of harassment that plagued the Karlssons after the death of their son and through much of the last NHL season, this newspaper has learned.

The application for a peace bond, sworn in front of Justice of the Peace Louise Logue on May 4, alleges that Monika Caryk, Hoffman’s partner, had threatened Melinda (neé Curry) and husband Erik Karlsson from November 2017 to the date the information was sworn to.

Mike Hoffman’s Goal Is To Stay In Ottawa

fom Ryan McKenna of the CP at the Globe and Mail,

Restricted free agent forward Mike Hoffman says his No. 1 goal is to remain an Ottawa Senator.

The 26-year-old, who was visiting Canadian IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe ahead of Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto, filed for salary arbitration with the Senators on July 5.

“We’re in the midst of trying to sign a new contract here,” Hoffman said, whose arbitration date is Aug. 4. “New coach coming in, Guy Boucher, I had him in junior when I played in Drummondville of the Quebec League. Very good relationship with him, we won a championship together. So definitely looking forward to working with him this year.”

Hoffman led Ottawa with 29 goals in 2015-16 while adding 30 assists in 78 games.

He was awarded a $2-million (all currency U.S.), one-year deal by an arbitrator before last season. He had asked for a one-year, $3.4-million contract, while the Senators countered with a one-year, $1.75-million contract.

Mike Hoffman Gains An Advantage By Electing Salary Arbitration

from Ken Warren of Senators Extra,

The Senators’ high-scoring, 26-year-old left winger may be a year removed from potential unrestricted free agency himself, but when the league’s free spending owners and general managers tossed out five and six-year deals like they were candy to the 30-somethings and almost 30-somethings at the top of the 2015 UFA forward class, a new bar for the open market was established.

Accordingly, Hoffman, who led the Senators with 29 goals last season and tops the team with 57 goals over the past two campaigns, has added leverage in upcoming tense contract negotiations with the Senators.

As expected, Hoffman filed for salary arbitration Tuesday, a move which guarantees that he will, at the very least, be under contract with Ottawa for one more season.

A year ago, Hoffman was rewarded $2 million following arbitration, but there are far different stakes this time around.

If Hoffman goes to arbitration again — hearing dates are scheduled for late July and early August — he’ll essentially spend the upcoming season showcasing himself for the rest of the league next summer.

Dave Cameron On Benching Mike Hoffman

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Asked if he was bothered by the fact he has to bench his leading goal scorer in Game 66 of the regular season with the club fighting for its playoff life, Cameron said that’s up to the players.

“They determine it. I don’t. Their play determines their ice time,” Cameron said.

The coach repeated it’s about doing what’s best to have success and Hoffman made a couple of ugly giveaways during a second-period power play.

“It’s about winning the game. It’s as simple as that,” Cameron added. “Every decision we make from the time we show up here early in the morning until we finish the game, it’s all about trying to do what’s right.”

Video- Mike Hoffman Goes Shoulder First Into The Goal Post

via Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators lost their leading goal scorer 5:40 into the second period when Hoffman violently flew into the goal post after breaking to the net with a Mark Stone pass. Hoffman lost his helmet with the impact, but it appeared the his shoulder or collarbone took the brunt of the scary collision.

Hoffman suffered not one but two collarbone injuries in the 2012-13 season.

Coach Dave Cameron could provide no updates after the game, and with the Senators spending Tuesday on a flight to New Jersey, none are expected until Wednesday.
