Top Prospect Yakupov A Recipient Of A Head Shot

The stage has been set for a stirring playoff series, should the Sarnia Sting and Owen Sound Attack meet in the first round of the OHL postseason…

Sting superstar Nail Yakupov cruised into the Owen Sound zone cut towards the middle of the ice, then, briefly, lost control of the puck.

As Yakupov tried to regain control, he reached out, putting him in a vulnerable position and Owen Sound captain Mike Halmo leveled him with a devastating hit….

Following the game, Sting coach Jacques Beaulieu said Halmo — who was assessed a charging penalty and a game misconduct — deserves a lengthy suspension for his actions.

“He left his feet,” to deliver the hit, said Beaulieu. “We went back and watched it (on replay) several times.”

Beaulieu said the side of Yakupov’s face took the brunt of the hit.

He needed, “a bunch of stitches ... and he was scraped up,” said Beaulieu, who added the team will wait to see how he feels on Sunday morning before deciding whether concussion testing will be necessary.
