Commodore Out 1-3 Weeks With Bad Knee

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Commodore might not be ready for the start of the regular season, Oct. 7 against Ottawa, due to a sore knee.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Commodore will be out 1-3 weeks.

Commodore hurt his knee in Wednesday’s preseason game at Chicago. He said it’s an MCL issue and an MRI revealed no damage.

“I just kind of tweaked my knee. I’ve never done that before so it’s all new to me,’’ Commodore said. ” It’s pretty sore and swollen. But there isn’t any major damage.’‘

Wings Sign Commodore, 1 Year

From Bob McKenzie (twitter)

As per @GMillerTSN, one year, $1M for Mike Commodore in Detroit.

Interesting to note, Commodore had these words to say back when he was playing for Columbus, about Babcock:

Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock played a role in making Commodore a better defenseman. But as appreciation rates go, Commodore’s is about on par with Enron stock.

“Mike Babcock was without a doubt an obstacle in my career,” said Commodore of the coach who traded him from Anaheim to Calgary in 2003.

“I wanted to prove him wrong, I’m not going to lie. I used him as big-time motivation. I thought he put his best foot forward to bury me.”

Hope they get that smoothed over…

Commodore Talks About His Time In Columbus

from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,

“I’ve enjoyed my time in Columbus. I liked being there,” Commodore said. “I like the guys. I like the front office. I love the fans and the city. I love being there.

“But I’ve been scratched in seven of the last eight games. We’ve got guys going down with food poisoning or the flu, and I still can’t get into the lineup.

“I’ve sat quiet and I’ve worked my (butt) off all year. I haven’t said anything, while Arniel has gone to the media and said, basically, that I can’t play. It gets to the point where I have to have some personal pride and I have to stand up for myself.”

Commodore practiced with the Blue Jackets yesterday perhaps for the final time. Before they took the ice in a suburban Anaheim, Calif., rink, Commodore said he addressed his teammates in the dressing room.

Anyone Want Commodore?

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-Rakers,

The Dispatch spoke to Commodore yesterday in Jobing.com Arena, after it was apparent he wasn’t playing in last night’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes but before the request for a trade was known.

Here’s what Commodore said:

“(Arniel) doesn’t want to play me. Obviously, he doesn’t want to play me. After wins, losses ... it doesn’t matter. Obviously, I’m the seventh guy in his mind. So, I’m going to take care of myself, be a good teammate, work hard, practice hard and keep myself ready for whatever comes in the future.”

This is the latest detour in what has been a winding road since Commodore signed a five-year, $18.75 million contract on July 1, 2008. A no-trade clause covered the first two years of the deal, but lifted last July 1.

Morning Line

“I gave up reading blogs.  I don’t read any of that stuff anymore because it’s this never-ending (thing where) we win a couple of games in a row and everybody’s getting ready to engrave this team’s name on the Stanley Cup, and all of a sudden you lose two games in a row, and it’s fire everybody and trade this and trade that. That’s fine, that’s part of being a fan, and it makes for good topics for discussion, but I can’t read that stuff anymore. You can only block it out for so long before it becomes irritating.”

Souray For Commodore Could Be A Match

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

The important thing is that even if they are larger than life characters, neither Commodore nor Souray is a bad guy - and that’s critical for any team worried about tampering with fragile chemistry and impressionable personalities.

So it will be interesting to see how the conversation evolves - and if it actually turns into something more than just testing the waters. Most times, these sorts of talks die because there are too many variables in play and ultimately just gets too complicated. Once in a while, a couple of motivated and inspired GMs find a fit - and make it work. For all of the principals, this should be one of those times.

“I have something to prove this year, I know that. I have to prove that I’m not done. People said a lot of things about me last year, and I’m sure they’re still saying some of it. That’s fine. That’s more motivation.”

Commodore Pulls Himself Out Of The Lineup, Even Though He Wasn’t In It

from Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch,

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock won’t get the chance to scratch Mike Commodore for tonight’s game.

The club’s highest-paid defenseman has told the coaching staff he won’t play until he feels “100 percent.”

It’s yet another twist in Commodore’s bizarre season, one filled with injury, poor play and conditioning issues.

On Sunday, he notified Hitchcock of his intent on the team’s flight to Vancouver. The coach had benched Commodore for the past three games but was thinking of playing him tonight, pending a meeting with the player and several assistants, including strength coach Barry Brennan.

“The whole year has been a disaster, but I’m looking to move forward,” Commodore said. “Unless I have to, I’m not playing until I’m ready, until I’m 100 percent. When is that going to be? I don’t know. I thought it was going to be a month ago.”

Commodore Not A Babcock Fan

from Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch,

“Mike Babcock was without a doubt an obstacle in my career,” said Commodore of the coach who traded him from Anaheim to Calgary in 2003.

“I wanted to prove him wrong, I’m not going to lie. I used him as big-time motivation. I thought he put his best foot forward to bury me.”

Commodore’s perceived injustice—the kind that can be found in almost every NHL locker room—adds intrigue to the Blue Jackets-Red Wings rivalry. The outspoken defenseman now gets to face his former coach six times a season.

In one breath, Commodore says “it’s water under the bridge,” and in the next concedes, “I still get fired up talking about it.”...

“The only thing I ever questioned about Mike was his conditioning,” Babcock said. “In my mind, Mike always has been a quality guy. When he came up, I didn’t think he was in condition. That’s it.”

Commodore Defends His Contract

from Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch,

In Columbus, he hopes to finally live up to his title as a stay-at-home defenseman. The contract Commodore signed—$18.75 million over five seasons—would seem to indicate as much. The deal’s first two years include a no-trade clause.

“I’m looking forward to staying in one place for a while,” Commodore said. “That would be nice. I’d like to take a break from moving and establish some roots if I could.”...

Some critics, however, say the Jackets overpaid for a defenseman with 14 career goals and 49 assists in seven seasons spanning 296 games. The Hockey News labeled it the fourth-worst signing of the summer.

“I’ll be the first to admit I got a very good contract for myself,” Commodore said. “I know (NBC and TSN analyst) Pierre McGuire ran his mouth up there, which is no shocker. I don’t set the market. If you take what I’ve done in the last three years and take my comparables ... I don’t think by any stretch of the imagination it was an unfair contract.”

Senators Free Agency Challenges

From Ken Warren at Canwest News via the National Post,

The club already has $32.3 million US locked up in the ‘08-09 salaries of Heatley, Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher, Martin Gerber and Chris Phillips.

The Senators must re-sign restricted free agents Antoine Vermette and Andrej Meszaros, while also contemplating whether to re-sign unrestricted-free-agent centre Cory Stillman, winger Shean Donovan and defenceman Mike Commodore, or any other player who may become available on July 1.

Commodore, for one, wants to know who the club’s new coach is before weighing his options on whether to return.

Morning Line

via Don Brennan at the Ottawa Sun,

Bryan Murray made light of the struggles of Mike Commodore yesterday, saying that while the big defenceman has brought much of what he was expected to bring to the table, the coach would like to see No. 44 improve his puck skills. “I’m going to loan him my stick,” said Murray. “I think the hands go with it.” Across the hall a few minutes later, Commodore was in no chuckling mood. “Fourteen games, no points, minus-6

Money Year For Commodore

from the News & Observer,

Commodore will make $1.3 million this season in the final year of a two-year contract. After that, if his progress continues, at age 28 he could find himself one of the top defensemen available on the market.

“I thought about it a little bit this summer, and it’s a little bit of motivation, I guess,” Commodore said. “Every summer you try and find something.

“Last year, my motivation was that I’m going to get a big opportunity to play, so I need to work a little harder in the weight room.

“This year, it’s a good opportunity for me to have another good year back-to-back and hopefully see where that takes me.”
