Another NHL Lawsuit And Mike Bossy Gets His Puck

Not one but two hockey related emails from TMZ (no I did not sign-up for them, they just send them to me knowing I am a hockey guy)...

A former professional hockey player is suing the NHL -- claiming he was seriously jacked up from several fights during his career ... and blames the league for failing to look out for his health.

The man behind the lawsuit is Cam Severson -- who was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 1997.

In his suit, Severson says he was involved in at least 10 fights during his career ... and specifically calls out an instance during the '03-'04 season where he was so badly disoriented, he skated to the wrong bench afterward and sat down with the wrong team....

Severson says the league glorifies dangerous bare knuckle fist fighting ... and cares about fighting even more than the actual game.

NHL God Mike Bossy just got a HUGE assist from a famous rich guy -- Gavin Maloof -- who shelled out a fortune to reunite Mike with a legendary hockey puck ... TMZ Sports has learned.

We broke the story, Bossy lost his famous "50 in 50 puck" -- which he used to score his 50th goal in 50 games back in '81 -- 30 years ago, after his daughter mistakenly gave it away.

The guy who ended up with the puck put it up on eBay back in May -- and when Maloof caught wind of the sale, he tells us he felt compelled to take action to help Bossy get it back.

"I said, 'We need to get this puck. It means a lot to Mr. Bossy,'" Maloof tells TMZ Sports.

Mike Bossy On Fighting

“I’m not at all surprised that there’s this spirited debate about fighting in the aftermath of [the McDavid incident],” he said. “Any time a player of that prominence is in a fight it raises the subject of whether the sport needs that.

“The way I see it, fighting in the NHL is silly. Almost all of the fights are staged and I still don’t know what they accomplish. It’s their designated fighter against your designated fighter. It can be embarrassing.

“When I played, fighting was meant to intimidate the other players. It was more of a message. I don’t think it serves that purpose anymore. If someone fights Matt Martin, John Tavares is not going to be intimidated...."

-Mike Bossy on the fighting issue.  More from Bossy by Larry Brooks of the New York Post plus a look at the "snubbing" of Eric Lindros for the HHOF.

The NHL versus Russia

The NHL’s arrival in Europe last week coincided with two exhibition games between the leagues teams and their Russian rivals; the KHL. First up was an aggressive affair between the Carolina Hurricanes and SKA St. Petersburg. In a role reversal between leagues, SKA came out playing aggressively, so much so, in fact, that Hurricanes coach, Paul Maurice pulled his star players; Eric Staal and goaltender Cam Ward from the game as it deteriorated into a slugfest which resulted in a 5-3 victory for SKA. The other interleague game featured the Phoenix Coyotes gaining a measure of revenge for the NHL, by defeating Dynamo Riga 3-1. The interleague games were part of a longstanding tradition of play between the NHL and Russia. With that in mind, I thought I would take a look at some of the most famous and infamous matchups between the two rivals.

1. The Montreal Canadiens versus Central Red Army
    December 31st, 1975

This matchup featured the most successful franchises from the NHL and the former Soviet league as the Canadiens played host to the Red Army team. Montreal featured Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, Larry Robinson and Bob Gainey among others against Valeri Kharlamov, Vladislav Tretiak, Vladimir Petrov and Boris Mikhailov. The level of play was as high as the 72’ Summit Series as the star players from each team were entering their prime. Despite outshooting Red Army 38-13, the Canadiens were forced to settle with a 3-3 tie, due to the outstanding play of Tretiak. This game would cement Tretiak’s longstanding relationship withe the city of Montreal, as the team would go on to draft the goaltender 138th overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, despite Soviet players not being allowed to compete in the NHL.

“It is when everyone is playing at their potential that great things can happen.  It doesn’t mean that they will happen, but they can happen and it’s always a matter of having the right pieces of the puzzle that makes great teams. With the young kids that we have on our team and with the success that they’ve had individually in the last couple of years, they’re on the right path.”
