Concerned About Matt Murray’s Concussions

from Jared Clinton of The Hockey News,

Concussions, we know, are a tricky thing. It’s not a sprain, a fracture or a break. There are no certainties with head injuries, no ability to pinpoint how long it will take a player to recover. Even Murray’s own concussion history indicates as much. When he suffered his first concussion in mid-April 2016, he was sidelined only two games before slotting back into the lineup come the post-season and propelling the Penguins to the Stanley Cup. However, his second concussion, suffered during a practice this past February, saw him out of action for nine games. And there’s no telling exactly how long Murray could be out this time around.

That is a frightening reality, too. The Penguins can’t know quite yet, and might not know for some time, how long Murray will be sidelined. Ask the Chicago Blackhawks. When Corey Crawford was sidelined in December of last season with a head injury, the hope was that he could return at some point in the not too distant future. That turned into some point before the trade deadline, then became some point before the end of the campaign and later became legitimate concern, especially among the fan base, about whether he would return at all. Crawford’s on his way back now, of course, and he could be back in action sometime this month, but his nearly 10-month absence is a clear-cut example of the kind of havoc concussions can wreak on a player.

But what makes Murray’s concussion all the more concerning is that he has a history.

Morning Line- Matt Murray

“At the end of the day, I’m not going to fill Marc-Andre Fleury’s shoes,” Murray said. “Nobody’s going to fill Marc-Andre Fleury’s shoes. It’s about being myself, doing the best that I can each and every day, and it’s about being better than I was yesterday.

“My day-to-day thought process isn’t to fill Marc-Andre Fleury’s shoes. If I’d do that, that would be reaching too high. I’m just going to be myself and do what I know how to do, try to take care of what I need to do to be successful.”

Matt Murray May Be Out At Least Through The First Round

from Sportsnet,

According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, the Penguins may not be getting Murray back at all in Round 1.

"Sullivan the head coach of Pittsburgh says there is a timetable for Murray to return, just not a public one. You certainly get a sense watching this…that this is not a day-to-day situation here.

"He may be done at least for the rest of this series," Kypreos said.

Former NHL goalie Kelly Hrudey believes the injury is due to a lack of preparation.

"At first blush when I look at it, I go this certainly looks like a severe injury, but why is that happening? He’s not preparing properly, he’s not stretching enough."

How About Matt Murray For The Calder?

from Frank Seravalli of TSN,

Maybe it’s because he already has a Stanley Cup ring.

Maybe it’s because he backstops the Pittsburgh Penguins, led by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who are duelling for the Art Ross and Rocket Richard trophies.

Or maybe it’s simply because Patrik Laine and Auston Matthews have gotten enough ink to drown him out.

No matter the reason, with the debate almost exclusively centred on Matthews or Laine, Penguins goaltender Matt Murray has become the forgotten Calder Trophy candidate in a crowded Rookie of the Year class.

He deserves to be in that mix,” Crosby said Wednesday. “He’s been really good for us. He’s just going up against some stiff competition with the way those guys are playing.”

If anything, Matthews’ current six-game point drought – during the most crucial stretch of the season – may only help to highlight Murray’s candidacy.

Matt Murray Signs A Three-Year Contract Extension

via the Pittsburgh Penguins,

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed goalie Matt Murray to a three-year contract extension, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The deal begins with the 2017-18 season and runs through the 2019-20 campaign, and it carries an average annual value of $3.75 million.

Murray, 22, backstopped the Penguins to the franchise's fourth Stanley Cup championship in June, becoming just the fourth rookie goalie in NHL history to lead his team to a championship. Murray racked up 15 postseason wins along the way, equaling the NHL record for wins by a rookie netminder.

The 6-foot-4, 178-pound netminder broke into the NHL last December, making his NHL debut against Carolina on Dec. 19, 2015, then earning his first win two days later against Columbus.
