from a Colorado Avalanche tweet,
The #Avs have come to terms with UFAs John Mitchell (formerly NYR) and Matt Carkner (formerly OTT). Official
update 2:13pm, Even though the Avs tweeted official, Carkner has now signed with the Islanders.
Brendan Shanahan tells us why…
Carkner’s flicking gesture (seemingly of his own blood) toward NYR bench is something I’m not sure I have seen before.
I would imagine league will follow up in some fashion. Suspension? Fine? Stern words? Blood donor clinic? Beats me.

I’m told Carkner just denied it…I agree it doesn’t look good though.
added 10:53pm, the second video below is the fight between Carkner and Boogaard that preceded the blood incident. Boogaard received a broken nose in the fight.
from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,
When Matt Carkner saw Colton Orr flash triple fingers to the Scotiabank crowd, he knew his Maple Leafs pugilist partner wasn’t signifying three wins for Toronto over the Senators in the Battle of Ontario.
Orr was trying to claim the victory in the third of four fights in as many games between them, though Carkner took exception to the signal as showboating.
“He was probably celebrating because he had three shifts in the game or something,” Carkner retorted.

from James Gordon of Hockey Capital,
Scary moment for Ottawa Senators fans tonight after defenceman Matt Carkner was dropped by Toronto’s Colton Orr in a first period fight. The big defenceman made it back to his feet, but definitely looked woozy as the referees and trainers surrounded him and forced him into the dressing room to make sure he was fine.
Colton Orr vs Matt Carkner last night.
