Nittymaki Edging Into #1 Spot in Philly

From Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer:

The Flyers will continue to use goalies Marty Biron and Antero Niittymaki the rest of the season.

But it has become clear that the order has changed.

Biron, who was the main reason the Flyers reached the Eastern Conference finals last season, will now have to play his way back into the No. 1 spot.

Until further notice, Niittymaki is the main man.

Chatting with the Flyers

From a press conference Q&A session featuring Philadelphia Flyers players Daniel Briere, R.J. Umberger, and Martin Biron.

        Q.  Danny, the way you’ve played this season and, the way the team has played overall this season, does this further validate your decision to leave the Sabres and go to the Flyers?

DANIEL BRIERE:  You know what, when I was looking at my options, obviously looking at Philly, you know, very similar as far as offense, where it’s a team that doesn’t just rely on one or two guys or on just one line.  We’ve seen it through the year.  Everybody’s chipping in.

Canadiens Can’t Beat Biron

from Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News,

It’s frustrating, obviously,” Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau said. “We just lost three games and I can’t sit there with the coaching staff and try to change things or the way we play tactically. We are playing great. We have scoring chances and we don’t give too much, but we lost the game. Biron is on top of his game right now. Whether he’s lucky or good or extremely good, he is making the saves . . .

“I’ve played with one guy that made those kind of saves that were silly sometimes.”

He means Ed Belfour back when Carbonneau won a Stanley Cup with Dallas, and silly is just the perfect word for it. He’s right. His team has not played badly, not at all. Their greatest fault lies in their attempts to be too perfect, too pinpoint, trying to be too impossible for Biron to stop.

Biron Embraces the Moment

From Darren Eliot at Sports Illustrated,

Watching Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Martin Biron embrace the moment is one of the best stories of these NHL playoffs. He embodies the axiom about the value of the journey over the destination. And while the Stanley Cup dream is the ultimate, Biron’s career-long anticipation of his first postseason action in the NHL makes him a prime example of the wait giving weight—as in richness—to the moment.

Biron Legitimate #1

from PhillyBurbs,

Team goals aside, Martin Biron entered this season with a personal objective: prove to himself and the world that he’s a legitimate No. 1 goaltender in the NHL.

The days of backing up Dominik Hasek and Ryan Miller in Buffalo are over. At 30, Biron is making a name for himself with the rejuvenated Flyers.

He admits there’s one thing that would hasten his validation as a high-level netminder — getting voted onto the Eastern Conference roster for the 2008 NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta.

Biron’s New Ride Matches His Jersey

From Chuck Gormley at the Courier Post,

“[My wife] gave it to me right before we left for the West Coast trip at the beginning of this season, so I was really itching to get back to the Philadelphia area to drive it around,” said Biron, who took the car for a spin through Voorhees Saturday morning.  Loaded with an original 302 engine, the car sounds almost as good as it looks.

“Almost everything is original from the way it was when it came out of production in 1969,” he said. “It’s a very nice collector’s edition.”

Biron said he changed the interior to black leather and kept the original orange and black paint design, adding black racing stripes. He said he’s lusted after the ‘69 Camaro long before he wore orange and black.
