Andrei Markov skating again;  no Price news is (good?) (bad?) no news

18 days to training camp, and we have some good news: Andrei Markov is back on skates. Yes, the Canadiens best defenceman is skating on his own and apparently ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery, the result of a hit during the playoffs so many months ago. More on that available here:

Markov back on skates

However, there is still no news regarding unsigned Canadiens starting goaltender, Carey Price. Vacationing in Quebec, I am able to testify first-hand that the “holdout” whispers are beginning. It is quite strange that neither player nor team has commented on the contract in weeks, as normally the odd quote filters out to diffuse the situation publicly. Perhaps we’ll hear more in the coming days, but for the time being we are bombarded by the sounds of silence.

In other Habs news, it was announced today that Jaroslav Halak is on his way back to Montreal…for a large public autograph signing next weekend. You can bet thousands will line up with their “HALAK” stop signs to get them signed and say thank you. Normally I am not a fan of these sorts of things, but proceeds from the sale of pictures Halak is signing are going to charity, so I think it’s a pretty neat gesture. From the reaction to the announcement on the radio, the city is still in love with the Bratislava Brick Wall.

Free agents still out there that the Canadiens SHOULD be interested in: Owen Nolan, Bill Guerin, Brendan Witt. But I would be very surprised at this point if any more moves take place before training camp – except the presumed signing of Mr. Price.

What Andrei Markov talks?

News today, via the wonderful Habsinsideout and Radio Canada, that Andrei Markov’s agent Don Meehan confirms no discussions have taken place on a Markov contract extension. Markov’s contract is due to expire at the end of the 2010-2011 season. More on that here:

Markov Talks Yet to Begin (French)

So no Andrei Markov talks, no news regarding a Carey Price contact – what exactly is Pierre Gauthier doing? My guess is that the Canadiens GM is heavily wrapped up in the Price negotiations, which may be going sideways. Consider some of the other restricted free agents currently without contracts for the coming season: Sam Gagner, Christ Stewart, Peter Mueller, Bobby Ryan, James Neal. The list goes on. These are all impact players, potential stars in some cases, younger than 23, and none of them have a contract with training camps a mere three weeks away. That’s not normal.

Who should be the next captain of Les Canadiens?

Over a year has past since Saku Koivu left Montreal for the sunny shores of California, and still the Canadiens do not have a captain. Speculation was rampant that it would be Andrei Markov – but he was never given the ‘C.’ Fans then began to theorize that the future captain wasn’t yet on the team - but I for one am glad the days of endless Vinny Lecavalier rumours are over.

No, the Canadiens next captain will come from the current collection of players on the roster. We know there will be a captain, because head coach Jacques Martin has said so. Who’s it going to be? There’s a fairly strong collection of veterans to choose from. Let’s take a look at a few.
