Video- Matt Bartkowski Hit On Brian Gionta Plus The Marcus Foligno Fight Which Followed

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,

The night’s signature play came with 5:52 left in the first period. Foligno was attempting a pass up the middle and the 5-foot-7 Gionta stretched for it just inside the Buffalo zone but was hit high by the 6-foot-1 Bartkowski.

Bartkowski’s shoulder seemed to contact Gionta’s shoulder and head before his elbow followed through on the hit. Gionta cartwheeled through the air and landed face-first on the ice, appearing to suffer a cut before skating off the ice for good under his own power.

“I was a little ahead of him so I kind of saw him just hit the ice,” winger Brian Flynn said of Gionta. “I knew it must have been bad. I got back to the bench and guys said the hit was a little early and to the head.”

Coach Ted Nolan had no update on Gionta other than to say he was “a little shaken up.” But Nolan acknowledged Foligno is going to be out a while after suffering a major hand injury while battling Bartkowski.

“The head hits are dangerous hits,” Nolan said. “We’ll let the league look at that and make the correct call.”

Garrioch: Sabres will clear the personnel decks

In his last rumor column of the 13-14 regular season, the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch ponders the state of the NHL's search for Brendan Shanahan's successor, the coaching and managerial decisions facing the Canucks, Penguins, Leafs, Panthers and Hurricanes, and he wonders where Mike Cammalleri, Ryan Kesler and Martin Brodeur will end up, but sometimes the "lede story" is the one you go with:

[Tim Murray, the] Buffalo Sabres’ GM has hung the ‘For Sale’ sign outside the club’s office and he’s willing to move just about anybody as the off-season officially gets underway Monday for non-playoff teams.

Sources say Murray has been shopping RW Chris Stewart, D Christian Ehroff, C Luke Adam and RW Drew Stafford.

It doesn’t stop there, either. The Sabres will also listen to see what they can get for LW Marcus Foligno, LW Johan Larsson and D Chad Ruhwedel.

The last three are young players that are still considered prospects so it’s a little surprising Murray would be willing to move any of those guys given the club’s current state and direction.

“He’s just open for business,” said a league executive about Murray before the weekend. “He hasn’t drafted any of these current guys.”

Garrioch continues at length...

Video- Marcus Foligno Suffers A Knee Injury

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,

The Sabres played most of the game a man short after Marcus Foligno left just 1:58 into the contest with what looked like a severe right knee injury following a collision in front of the Blues’ net. Nolan said the injury is “not as ‘bad bad’ as we think” but that Foligno would miss the final six games.
