Former NHLer’s in Europe Part II

This week we will continue to look at former NHL players who are now playing in Europe.

Jaromir Jagr
Avangard Omsk

Jagr is clearly not the offensive force that he was in his heyday with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has become quite a mentor to younger KHL players, while recording 14 points in 19 games for sixth place Avangard Omsk. However, Jagr’s most impressive feat this year was leading an undermanned Czech squad to World Championship gold against a heavily favoured Russian squad that featured Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Gonchar.

Miroslav Satan
HC Slovan Bratislava

Satan is hoping to land another midseason NHL contract as he did with the Boston Bruins last year. In the meantime, Satan registered eight points during a three game contract with Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak league. Satan can still find the back of the net and may yet have another crack at the NHL.

Manny Legace Ready For Another Chance

from Adam Proteau of The Hockey News,

The guy never has had the red carpet of life rolled out for him. For virtually his entire hockey career, he’s been dissed, dismissed, doubted and degraded. Even the person who engraved his name on the Stanley Cup engraved his surname as ‘Lagace’.

But like the famous movie producer Robert Evans, the kid has found a way to stay in the picture.

“You get used to it,” Legace told THN.com. “It’s been that way my whole life. ‘He’s too fat, he’s too small, he’s too this or that.’ So you get used to having to prove yourself every day. And that’s fine with me; that’s made me a better person and a better goalie.”

Manny Legace Waived by St. Louis

From Jeremy Rutherford at the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

The Blues will place goaltender Manny Legace on waivers at 11 a.m. today, the Post-Dispatch has learned.

The team will know this weekend whether Legace has been claimed by another team.

If he is not, Legace will be sent to Peoria.

“It’s extremely tough,” Legace said this morning. “You play your heart out for a team, and the minute you hit a little bit of a rough patch, they dump on you.

Update 1:11pm ET: Press Release from the St. Louis Blues—

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today the club has recalled goaltender Chris Holt from the Blues’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen.

Update 1:20pm ET: From Jeff Gordon at St. Louis Today

Actually, the Blues hockey staff has been patient this season. Legace started the year as the clear No. 1 goaltender and had every chance to keep that job.

With top prospect Ben Bishop needing more time in Peoria, Legace had a chance to extend his stay in a city he clearly loves. But nagging injuries and inconsistency marred his season and hurt the Blues’ competitive chances.

Morning Line With Video Evidence

Legace Frustrated

from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

Legace, too, has failed to duplicate his All-Star season from last year, and his frustration spilled onto the ice at Friday morning’s practice. Legace was taking shots near the end of practice when he and Blues assistant coach Rick Wamsley engaged in a heated argument. Wamsley and Legace declined to comment after the game.

Legace has had a contentious relationship with the Blues, stemming from his decision to have knee surgery over the summer and a failed attempt to receive a contract extension last summer.

But a source said Friday that the bad blood was frustration from the team not winning. The coaching staff also had been upset with Legace earlier in the practice after he took several minutes to change skates on the team’s bench.

Legace Takes A Knee To The Head

from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

Several players took blows to the head in Wednesday’s game between the Blues and Anaheim Ducks, but none was more serious than the one on goalie Manny Legace….

On the play in which Legace was injured, George Parros buried a rebound for a 1-1 score, and skating by the front of the net, Carter lifted his knee into Legace’s head.

“I’m a little foggy,” Legace said. “All that I know is that the goal is in and he comes skating by and there’s nobody pushing him and there’s nobody on him. He could have avoided it. It’s something to look at.”

Blues coach Andy Murray said there should have been interference called on the play, but the officials told him they didn’t see the collision happen.

Legace Fighting Slump

from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

Blues goalie Manny Legace said after Wednesday’s 4-3 defeat at Buffalo that he’s at a loss for what is ailing him.

Legace said it’s not the groin injury that kept him out for two weeks, and after playing Saturday night in Los Angeles, he couldn’t blame rust.

“If I could tell you, I would never play awful ... I’d never have a bad stretch in my career ... I’d be making $100 million a year,” said Legace, who allowed three goals on seven shots before Chris Mason replaced him 5 minutes, 18 seconds into the game.

How Manny Got Hurt

from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

I was going to ask (the arena worker) to move (the carpet), but he had his foot there, so I figured he was trying to secure it,” Legace said. “He’s yelling at us, ‘Careful, the carpet ... Careful, the carpet.’

“I’m like I can’t jump over it. It’s too far and my little legs won’t jump that far. I just figured he’s holding it and the other end is usually secure, so I’m just worried about it sliding (one) way. As soon as I went down, he lifted his foot off the carpet ... I knew I was coming down and I just couldn’t catch myself.

“It’s not that serious ... we’ll just see what happens tomorrow.”

Friday Night Injury Report

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner suffered an undisclosed injury and the Flyers defeated the Devils 5-3 tonight at Prudential Center.

Langenbrunner headed to the Devils’ locker room with the trainer after taking a hard hit from Flyers defenseman Luca Sbisa along the right wing boards in the Philadelphia zone 7:55 into the second period. It appeared Langenbrunner had a left leg injury, but it was difficult to tell.

via Steve Zipay of Blue Notes,

With 11:38 left in the second period, Rangers coach Tom Renney was clipped on the left side of the head by Rostislav Klesla’s stick during a scrum at the bench.

He went down to the floor, an official said between the second and third period, may have lost consciousness, was assisted off the ice and was being X-rayed. Assistants Mike Pelino and Perry Pearn took over. Renney did not return before the end of the period.

A Rangers spokesman said during the intermission that Renney “was OK. He was hit on the top of the head.”

added 10:11pm, from Norm Sanders of the New-Democrat,

St. Louis Blues goaltender Manny Legace suffered what the team called a lower-body injury Friday and did not return for the second period against the Los Angeles Kings.

Legace may have been injured when he slipped on a piece of carpeting coming out for pregame warmups. The carpet was on the ice for a pregame ceremony involving Republic vice-presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin.

Morning Line

I’m an old guy now,”  I think I’ve gotten to that realization that ‘Hey, I can’t stop that one that went in last night. I’ve got to stop the next one that’s coming at me.’ It’s a different look at it when you get a little bit older, you’ve got to respect the game a little more.”

They Used To Be Backups

from Ross McKeon of Yahoo,

It’s interesting to see what has happened this week to Manny Legace and Chris Osgood, a couple of goalies the Detroit Red Wings thought were nothing more than back-ups not long ago.

Legace was named the league’s No. 1 star for the week ending Jan. 6. The St. Louis Blues’ No. 1 man in the net has pretty much been spot on all season, despite playing at less than 100 percent.

Osgood has played so well that not only has he emerged as the go-to guy in Detroit, but the Red Wings awarded the 35-year-old with a three-year contract extension on Wednesday.

Holy Hasek, what’s going on here?

Manny Legace Conference Call Transcript

Earlier today, Manny Legace was named First Star for the week ending January 6th, after appearing in three games for the Blues and not allowing a goal. He recorded two wins, pushing his record this season to 15-10-2 in 29 appearances. His 2.09 goals-against average is fifth among all NHL goalies. He has a .921 save percentage and his three shutouts this season give him a career total of 21.

Today Legace participated in an NHL conference call. Here is the transcript of the Q&A:

Q.  I guess you made a comment about your knee recently that sort of surprised John . But more importantly, have you had any discussions with Andy Murray about work load or is there a plan so as you are battling for a playoff spot you don’t have a repeat of last year where you had to shut it down early?

Legace Says Surgery, Blues Haven’t Heard About It

from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

Talking informally Tuesday about how good he feels, Legace said he’s not worried about remaining healthy the rest of the season but added he’ll have postseason surgery to put a “plug” in his right knee. That’s the same knee on which Legace had arthroscopic surgery last spring to repair cartilage.

“I have a defect in my bone and my cartilage,” Legace said. “We knew about (the defect) before we went into the surgery last year ... the consensus was that it wasn’t big enough that the plug was necessary.”

“So, we hoped it would be OK like it was last season, and it ended up that it got a little worse over the summer,” Legace said. “The cartilage probably wore away to the bone. If it wasn’t for these Don Joy braces, I don’t think I could play. But if I jam it too hard, it just swells right up.”

Davidson was caught off guard by Legace’s certainty that he’d need surgery.

“I would think that at the end of the season, he’d re-evaluate the situation and see if he needs surgery or not. As far as I know, I don’t think there’s anything in stone,” Davidson said.

Legace Targets 60 Games

from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

On Monday, two days after leaving in the second period of a 5-3 Blues win over Los Angeles with a “tweaked” right knee, Legace was reassessing his proclamation. He was back at practice bending and scooting with ease and said he will start in the Blues’ home opener against Nashville on Wednesday night. But as far as playing 70 games this season, probably not.

“Sixty would be good ... that would be a good mark, not to push it,” said Legace, 34. “We’ll see how it goes. I’m just going to take all the precautions in the world.”
