Well, it’s been pretty quiet on the Winnipeg Jets front these days - yes, there have been some minor goings-on, and in a hockey-starved town like this one any small development gets some big play. Personally, I’m don’t think I have the ability to hang on every tiny detail over the summer - it might actually drive me nuts. Until I start seeing some real Jets jerseys on some real Jets players, I’m going to keep enjoying the warm Winnipeg summer - the calm before the storm. We’ve waited fifteen years - what’s a couple more months?

Keane Gets Honored In Manitoba

from Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press,

The Manitoba Moose will retire Mike Keane’s No. 12 jersey tonight in a celebration of his time both with the local pro franchise and his storied NHL career.

Keane, who won three Stanley Cups with three different teams before spending his final five years as a pro with the Moose, will be the first player to receive such an honour from the hockey team.

All Jeff Tambellini

from Kirk Penton of the Winnipeg Sun,

Each week a Sun staffer gets to know a sports figure a little better in Up Close. This week Kirk Penton chats with the newest member of the Manitoba Moose, forward Jeff Tambellini.

SUN: Are family dinners awkward when you’re a free agent and your dad’s at the table?

JT: Never. I’d never sign with him. It’s just a bad road to go down. I want no piece of that.

SUN: What is it like having your dad as an NHL GM?

JT: It’s something I only know, so it’s just kind of what we have. I play, he picks the teams.

SUN: Seriously, there’s no way you’d ever sign with him?

JT: No, not a chance.

SUN: You’re being dead honest?

JT: Oh, I’m dead serious.

Will Mike Keane Play Another Year?

from Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press,

The Manitoba Moose seem to have reached the conclusion they should begin considering life after Mike Keane.

Keane, Moose captain for the past five seasons, hangs in limbo these days, waiting to hear if he’ll be given the chance to play one more season.

After 22 years of pro hockey and at 43 years old, the fire still burns for Keane.

But this decision doesn’t lie just with the player. Management has to be a willing partner for the dance to continue.

So far, the Moose have had very little to say on the subject. Presumably, they are weighing their options on what Moose GM Craig Heisinger calls an “organizational decision.” In other words, the GM alone won’t be making the call on Keane’s future.

Afternoon Line

“Honestly I’m just going day to day right now.  I had a great talk with (Moose coach) Scotty Arniel and every day I’m on the ice is just another day to get my legs going and feel good and have fun.

“As long as I’m here, there are young guys I think I can help and make better and it’s just all about being a good leader and being a good guy in the dressing room. That’s all I’ve ever tried to do my whole career.”

-Mathieu Schneider of the Manitoba Moose.  More on Schneider from Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press.
