Garrioch: Sabres will clear the personnel decks

In his last rumor column of the 13-14 regular season, the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch ponders the state of the NHL's search for Brendan Shanahan's successor, the coaching and managerial decisions facing the Canucks, Penguins, Leafs, Panthers and Hurricanes, and he wonders where Mike Cammalleri, Ryan Kesler and Martin Brodeur will end up, but sometimes the "lede story" is the one you go with:

[Tim Murray, the] Buffalo Sabres’ GM has hung the ‘For Sale’ sign outside the club’s office and he’s willing to move just about anybody as the off-season officially gets underway Monday for non-playoff teams.

Sources say Murray has been shopping RW Chris Stewart, D Christian Ehroff, C Luke Adam and RW Drew Stafford.

It doesn’t stop there, either. The Sabres will also listen to see what they can get for LW Marcus Foligno, LW Johan Larsson and D Chad Ruhwedel.

The last three are young players that are still considered prospects so it’s a little surprising Murray would be willing to move any of those guys given the club’s current state and direction.

“He’s just open for business,” said a league executive about Murray before the weekend. “He hasn’t drafted any of these current guys.”

Garrioch continues at length...

Finances Dictate Sabres’ Roster Moves

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

Understand, the beef here isn’t about Adam, Kennedy, Niedermayer or Gerbe in particular. It’s about management’s approach in general. The Sabres are hoping to make the playoffs, but there’s a big difference between hoping to reach the postseason and doing what’s required to get there.

Almost every move General Manager Darcy Regier has made since the lockout has been based on attrition, not competition, and money, not winning. The Sabres too often this year looked like they were going through the motions, much like Regier did last summer. Their awakening going into the all-star break could be too late.

Adam, Gerbe Get Prime Time Tonight

You might think Sabres coach Lindy Ruff would have to be desperate to put a pair of struggling youngsters on the top two forward lines.  Well, his 25th ranked offense is averaging a paltry 2.4 goals per game.  It’s hard to blame him for feeling a little antsy.

Enter Nathan Gerbe and Luke Adam, who are getting premium billing despite tallying only 4 assists in 20 total games between them this season.

Buffalo idly slid down the ladder during its five day break which ends tonight at home against Columbus, and the Sabres suddenly find themselves eight points behind eighth place Atlanta.  The gap is measurable now, and this team has a lot of work to do.

For his part, Ruff is rolling out a new look lineup trying to kick-start his offense.
