Larry Pleau Says Goodbye To The Blues

from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

...as Pleau sat at the Blues’ draft table in Los Angeles last week, it hit him like a Bobby Plager hip check. His final day under contract as GM is Wednesday.

“It’s kind of sad, there’s no doubt about it ... because you’ve been there for a long time,” said Pleau, who is the third-longest tenured GM in the NHL. “But we did it for the right things. It’s going to give me a lot more time with (his wife) Wendy. I’ve got no complaints, 13 years here, it was a great run.”

In 1997, Pleau became the 10th GM in Blues history, succeeding Ron Caron. Pleau “is ready to manage in the NHL,” Caron declared at the time.

More Life Chapters Ahead

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

They walk toward the cancer clinic at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and he reaches for her hand, an instinct no more conscious than the last breath he took. He opens the door for her, his hand gently in the small of her back, retracing steps traveled many times over the past three years.

It’s quiet here on a sunny Sunday morning, and the couple is greeted warmly like old friends by the staff at the clinic. Tim, one of the health care staff, who has been here for so many of these visits, tells Larry Pleau and his wife, Wendy, that he’s sorry they missed his homemade turtles the day before. They joke about the missed opportunity before Tim disappears and returns a short while later with a box of the candy for Wendy.

Jane, another staffer, works on the three-pronged catheter that has been embedded near the tip of Wendy’s aorta since June 15, 2007, drawing blood and then redoing the dressing around the device.

The device has made the regular blood transfusions and tests and administering of antibiotics easier, but it also has been a constant reminder of what has been taken from her.

All Larry Pleau

from Chris Pinkert of St.LouisBlues.com,

It’s been a busy few months for Larry Pleau, the team’s Sr. Vice President and General Manager. With the trade deadline passing in early March and the team’s recent surge toward the postseason, we thought now was a good time to catch up with Pleau to discuss a variety of Blues topics.

Q: Considering how the team has battled since early January, do you think they are “playoff tested” already?

A: We’ve been playing ‘desperate’ hockey, I would say, since the end of December. I think the coaches have done a great job of keeping the players focused on the game-to-game situation, preparation, the opponents they’re playing against and understanding how important the games are: even if it was a game in January, it (was) going to affect where we end up in April.

St. Louis Extends Larry Pleau to 2010

From the St. Louis Blues,

St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today the club has extended the contract of Sr. Vice President and General Manager, Larry Pleau through the 2009-10 season. Davidson also announced the club has named Doug Armstrong as Blues Vice President of Player Personnel. He will assume the General Manager duties beginning in 2010.

“Larry has been very valuable to this organization for many years,” said Davidson. “Under his watch we have locked up our young players with long term deals and continue to stockpile many up and coming prospects. Doug’s accomplishments in Dallas are quite impressive, with two Western Conference titles, two President’s Trophies and a Stanley Cup.

Juggling Executives in St. Louis

From Jeremy Rutherford at Morning Skate at STLtoday.com,

On Wednesday, John Davidson acknowledged that the Blues are talking to Dave Nonis about joining the team’s management staff. This seemed a bit odd since Nonis, recently fired as the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, is looking to resurface as a GM and has been linked to the vacancy in Toronto. Is Larry Pleau going somewhere? The answer is “No” and “Yes.”

Pleau, who’s been in the Blues’ GM chair for 10 years, will enter the final month of his contract in June. While it might seem that the Blues are about to relinquish Pleau of his duties or re-assign him within the organization to make room for a guy like Nonis, that is not the case. At least not yet.

Davidson says the Blues need another set of eyes in the sky.
