from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Edmonton Oilers’ blueliner Ladislav Smid has never been about numbers–certainly not goals and assists, rifling a puck past goalie Cory Schneider Saturday night, his first goal in a calendar year–but dollars and cents is another story. He does know what other purely defensive defencemen in the National Hockey League are making, guys who are strictly defenders of the blue-paint like Brooks Orpik, Josh Gorges and Rob Scuderi. He wants to be in their pay neighbourhood.
So, with the Oilers solidly in the playoff picture, but with the clock ticking loudly on the unrestricted free-agent before Wednesday’s 1 p.m MDT trade deadline, he is looking for between $3.5 million and $4 million a season. He might err more on the lower side than the higher end because this is where he’s played for six years and he’s put in a lot of hard miles with bad teams to get to where he can see light at the end of the tunnel, a playoff spot certainly visible with glasses not binoculars, with the Calgary Flames at Rexall Place Monday night.
from Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun,
Ladislav Smid heard the about the trade via a 4 a.m. wakeup call.
He wasn’t happy.
Nor was he too impressed about waiting over a month to see if it would actually come to fruition.
“I thought I handled it pretty well,” said the Edmonton Oilers defenceman.
“I was trying hard not to think about it. I was just waiting to see what was going to happen. It sucked, but I was just trying to relax back in the Czech Republic, spend some time with my family and try not worry about it.”
from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun,
The Journal’s David Staples, who covers the Edmonton Oilers from home, wrote that Oilers defenceman Ladislav Smid has been “begging” to be traded out of Edmonton.
The Smid blog came complete with a character analysis explaining why Smid might want out—even though Smid says he’s never met the writer.
“On the Internet, some guy is writing some (crap) about me wanting to be traded,” he said.
“You know what Edmonton is like, lots of rumours. I don’t even pay attention.”
update 12:07pm, for some reason, the Edmonton Sun has either pulled the story or they are having an issue with the link. It was working and now it is not.
added 3:46pm, Here is an alternate link to the Edmonton story via Slam. Be aware, Slam links on occasion disappear too.
