Brooks: Oilers and Rangers talking trade turkey

Take this for what you will. The New York Post's Larry Brooks suggests that the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers may be pursuing a trade because the Rangers have come up short on offense minus the concussed Rick Nash:

The Oilers dispatched a scouting expedition featuring their president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe, general manager Craig MacTavish and special adviser Mark Messier to the Garden on Monday for the Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to the Ducks.

Edmonton, which has opened 3-10-2 under first-year coach Dallas Eakins, is believed to be accepting offers for veteran winger Ales Hemsky while also exploring the market for second-year winger Nail Yakupov, the first overall selection in the 2012 Entry Draft.

Even if interested in Hemsky, the Blueshirts would have to maneuver to get under the cap in order to accommodate the 30-year-old. Hemsky is on the final year of a contract worth a $5 million cap charge and is eligible for unrestricted free agency in July.

Kevin Lowe Was Right

from Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun,

There was nothing factually incorrect in Edmonton Oilers president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe’s remarks the other day, during the formal firing of general manager Steve Tambellini, when he said that the organization likes all of its fans, but likes the ones who pay to get in just a little bit better.

Any National Hockey League team that tells you different is fudging the truth.

Political correctness aside — i.e., it’s never a good idea to make the hoi polloi feel like second-class citizens when they’re about to foot the tax bill for a new arena — facts are facts.

NHL teams, depending on how vibrant their markets are, make somewhere between a half and two-thirds of their dough from ticket sales. The other avenues — local and national TV and radio revenues, sponsorships, merchandise sales, concessions, parking — combine to form the smaller portion of the revenue stream.

Would You Have Paid To See A Kevin Lowe/Brian Burke Barnyard Battle?

Burke set three dates up in Lake Placid, watch the video to find out the results.

The pay to see was not part of the battle plan, that is just me writing a headline to grab your attention.

Tampering Charges Still Alive

From Dan Wood at Ducks Blog,

Just because we haven’t heard anything about it lately doesn’t mean that something couldn’t still come from the Ducks’ formal tampering charge against the Edmonton Oilers.

The NHL gave Edmonton until Friday to respond to the charge filed last month by Ducks general manager Brian Burke after comments made by then-Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe during a July 4 interview with Edmonton’s Team 1260 radio.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, who is on vacation this week, is expected to have something to say on the matter after receiving and processing the Oilers’ response.

Fight On

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,

...Bettman hasn’t done so yet – and even if he did, I doubt he’d do it publicly – but I sure hope he doesn’t listen to those buttoned-up arbiters of appropriateness.

In fact, I’d love nothing more than to see him add more fuel to the fire and give Lowe and Burke (a) full license to draw caricatures of each other in public, (b) two of those giant cotton swab devices they use on American Gladiators, and (c) a dump truck’s worth of salt for each other’s wounds.

added 2:47pm, from TSN,

A few days after Edmonton Oilers’ Kevin Lowe fired back at rival GM Brian Burke, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman tried to pour water on the feud of the two rival team executives.

Following comments by Burke over the past year and comments Lowe made recently to an Edmonton radio station, Bettman ordered the two to cease and desist in a conference call Monday.

Lowe Has Had Enough

from TSN,

In a candid interview with Edmonton’s Team 1260, Lowe - who stayed relatively quiet each time Burke went after him over the last 12 months - finally let it all out.

“Where do I begin?,” started Lowe. “He’s a moron, first of all. Secondly, he really believes that any news for the NHL is good news. Thirdly, he loves the limelight and I don’t think anyone in hockey will dispute that. Lastly, he’s in a pathetic hockey market where they can’t get on any page of the newspaper let alone the front page of the sports, so any of this stuff carries on.”

Oilers Owner Having Free Agency Fun

Edmonton billionaire Daryl Katz spoke to the media today.

From the CP via TSN:

Minutes before the news conference, the Oilers latest hopes of landing a marquee forward were dashed when word surfaced that Marian Hossa had signed a one-year deal with Detroit.

But Katz simply smiled as he talked about the excitement of working this week with Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe as they bid for Hossa to give Edmonton some much-needed scoring punch.

“We’ve had a lot of fun,” he said. “The experience of pursuing Marian was great for us and it won’t be the last time.”

Reflecting on the Dustin Penner Deal

From Robert Tychkowski at the Edmonton Sun,

Much ado, it turns out, about nothing.

“It’s just so typical of how people jump to conclusions,” Edmonton’s general manager said yesterday in a telephone interview from the World Championships.

Lowe took enormous heat at the time of the deal, and was forced to defend himself during every subsequent attack from Burke.

Now that the draft order is complete (except for 27, 28, 29 and 30, depending on how the final four play out), and the evidence is there in black and white, there has to be a sense of vindication. Unfortunately there’s no undoing the bad blood and the black mark the the feud left on Burke, Lowe and the NHL.

Kevin Lowe vs Mike Gillis

Kevin Lowe has stated he’s not likely to consider doing business in the future with the new Canucks GM, given their previous run-in as agent-vs-GM last summer over Michael Nylander.  But not everyone has sympathy for Lowe’s position.

From Jason Botchford at The Province:

“I am horrified that someone’s integrity is called into question for something they didn’t do and by someone who did something much worse than Mike Gillis could ever be accused of,” agent Rich Winter said. “It’s an embarrassment to the game that Kevin Lowe would use the news media to make these accusations given what he’s done.”

In December 2003, Lowe was shopping Mike Comrie, Winter’s client, and found a taker in then-Ducks GM Bryan Murray. The pair agreed to a deal that would send young Anaheim forward, and future Stanley Cup champion, Corey Perry and a first-round pick to Edmonton for Comrie and a second-round pick.

Murray was worried he would lose Comrie to free agency if he made the deal. To appease Murray, Lowe authorized the Ducks’ general manager to begin negotiations with Comrie. Anaheim then signed the forward to an extension and, in its view, the deal was done.

But “not so fast,” says Botchford.  The rest of the story…

Lowe Spending the Bucks

From Robin Brownlee at Metro,

Did Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe overpay when he inked Tom Gilbert to a six-year deal worth $24 million US Friday? Probably.

Did Lowe overpay when he signed Sheldon Souray to a five-year contract for $27 million? Definitely — by as much as $1 million a season over any other offer, according to my sources.

On both counts, the luxury of such a debate didn’t exist under the NHL’s old collective bargaining agreement — the Oilers couldn’t bid on free agents and couldn’t afford to keep their own players.  Under the new CBA, Lowe hasn’t hesitated to put his money where his mouth is in offering long-term contracts to players he deems cornerstones of the franchise.

No Sale In Edmonton

from the Edmonton Journal,

MacTavish dubbed Tuesday night’s fiasco “a humbling, humbling effort,” which was an accurate, but not quite adequate descriptor for the dreadful occasion.

And, with the Oilers seven points out of a playoff spot and the Feb. 26 trade deadline just 27 days away, don’t expect GM Kevin Lowe to go all Plan B on the faithful and jeopardize the future. But that sort of resolve will be tested by games like this one.

“I like our team overall, and we’re not trading any of our good players,” Lowe had said, earlier Tuesday. “I’m not going to do a deal for next year.

“If there’s something that can help us for this year, I’m not going to mortgage any of the young guys or any of that stuff.”

They’ll Never Forget

from TerryJones of the Edmonton Sun,

While the Oilers moved out of last place and into a tie with the Calgary Flames with the win last night, Brian Burke’s quote still looks good.

“We’re going to take three draft picks back and given Kevin’s recent performance I expect them to be excellent picks,” said Burke after Lowe signed restricted free agent Penner and sacrificed a first-, second- and third-round draft pick in a very good draft year. If the Oilers stay where they are in the standings, Burke will be picking very early indeed.

Then there’s the flip side of it.

When Lowe traded Mrs. Pronger and her husband to the Ducks two years ago, the Oilers ended up with Anaheim’s first-round draft pick. As the Stanley Cup champion Ducks struggle, the Oilers could be picking a lot earlier than they expected.

Oilers In Rebuilding Mode

from the Vancouver Sun,

Apparently, the Oilers are rebuilding. Rebuilding with a payroll nudging the $50.3-million salary cap. Rebuilding without any of the first three Oiler draft picks in 2008 that Lowe surrendered to sign Penner, who had produced three goals in 20 games before facing the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night. Rebuilding after stating all summer the objective was to win now, although Edmonton is last in the Western Conference.

“We’re a young hockey team right now,” Lowe said Monday on an Oilers’ radio show. “There’s no question we’re back into a rebuilding situation.

Extra Security For Feuding GMs Not Needed

From Eric Stephens at the LA Times,

The juicy subplot to Sunday’s game between the Ducks and the Edmonton Oilers seemed certain to come to a head.

But there was no shouting match or chance public encounter between the Ducks’ Brian Burke and the Oilers’ Kevin Lowe, the teams’ bickering general managers who avoided each other even as the NHL dispatched extra security because of the tension between the two.

And the subject of the controversial offer sheet at the heart of that tension, Dustin Penner, did little in his first appearance at Honda Center since he skated around the ice with the Stanley Cup in June.

Burke Has No Plans To Speak With Lowe

from the OC Register,

So what is likely to happen if Burke and Lowe cross paths Sunday in the press box?

“I assume we will,” Burke said. “His booth is right next to mine. I sit down. He sits down. And the puck drops.”

By his account, Burke “always” stops by the visiting general manager’s quarters to at least exchange pleasantries.

Sunday night?

“Not a chance,” he said.

Breaking Down Burke vs. Lowe

from Damien Cox at ESPN,

Are teams in the NHL business partners above all else? Or are they competitors first and foremost, and thus perfectly within their rights to take advantage of an opponent’s soft spots if they become evident?

This, really, is what the much-publicized Brian Burke versus Kevin Lowe verbal slap fight is all about.

Make no mistake about it, this is one entertaining confrontation, albeit one that has taken place mostly with Burke in California and Lowe in Edmonton, Alberta….

These days, if you take Burke at his word, he wouldn’t even speak to Lowe if the Edmonton GM walked into his office looking for a stapler. He wouldn’t stop for Lowe at the side of the road if Lowe’s motor vehicle were on fire.

Everyone Loves a Good Controversy

From Victor Chi at The Sporting News,

For the sake of the NHL, let’s hope that Ducks GM Brian Burke and his Oilers counterpart, Kevin Lowe, continue their verbal sniping.

The league went through the considerable expense of exporting the Ducks and Kings to England for the season openers in hopes of expanding its profile. But the Burke-Lowe exchanges already have generated oodles more buzz than the trans-Atlantic foray, and in today’s fragmented and multi-layered media landscape, relevance is king.
