News from the Farm: 10/21/10

If you’re looking for an update on Aunt Bessie’s cow, or information on last summer’s harvest, look on.

If, however, you’re looking for news and information on the top minor league affiliates of the NHL’s Southeast Division clubs, you’re in the right place.

In years past, I would run News from Norfolk as a regular feature on Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate and now, News from the Farm will feature the Charlotte Checkers, Chicago Wolves, Hershey Bears and Rochester Americans along with the Admirals, to follow the progress of the Southeast’s future stars at the AHL level (and, at least for now, Michael Nylander and Sheldon Souray too).

We’ll look at game results, standings, league and team-leading scorers and goaltenders, pick a player of the week, have a glance at the schedule ahead and keep you abreast of any other developments for these players and their clubs.

Thursday seemed as good a day as any for this weekly feature, so that’s where it will be slotted in to start (and this week, as the first installment, there’s plenty of AHL action to catch up on).

Without further delay, News from the Farm:

Justin Pogge No Longer A Future Star

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

It has been five years since he was drafted 90th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and more than three years since he backstopped Canada to a gold medal victory at the world junior championship. And after a disastrous NHL debut, it has been months since anyone within the franchise referred to the 23-year-old as the franchise’s goaltender of the future.

Instead, with the team having recently signed Swedish free agent Jonas Gustavsson to challenge for the Leafs’ No. 1 spot—and with prospect James Reimer expected to start the season for the Toronto Marlies—Pogge is now in danger of being the goaltender who is simply forgotten.

“Justin Pogge is basically comparable to a child actor, who’s had success at a young age and just can’t handle it mentally,” said Steve McKichan, who was the Leafs’ goaltending coach from 2005-06 through 2007-08.

A Bad Night For Pogge

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

Last night might have been one of those nasty, scarring experiences that a goalie never gets over and Pogge’s bewilderment seemed to hint at that after surrendering six goals on 20 shots to the Boston Bruins and being yanked after fewer than 33 minutes.

“Tonight sucked,” he said. “I’ve just got to go back to work tomorrow, I guess.”

Pogge’s brief outing included an unusual moment when, after he’d given up the fifth Boston goal, head coach Ron Wilson essentially challenged the third-year pro with some sharp words at the bench.

“Ah, you know, it was a slap on the ass, you know, try to get back into it,” said Pogge, choosing his words carefully. “Unfortunately, the first shot after that was a breakaway.”

Ron Wilson On Toronto’s Goalie Prospect

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,

When asked if Pogge would be summoned from the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies over the final few weeks of the season, Wilson said post-trade deadline callup restrictions make such a move difficult.

Then came a stinging shot at Pogge’s less-than-stellar performance of late.

“He has not performed well since he went back to the minors,” Wilson said. “He has to play better.

“We’re not going to reward him for poor play.”

General manager Brian Burke said management still has high hopes for Pogge.

Toskala Nursing Groin Injury, Pogge Probable For Leafs Next Game

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,

Twenty-two-year-old netminder Justin Pogge is expected to make his NHL debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday.

The Leafs will promote the young prospect from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL after No. 1 goalie Vesa Toskala suffered a groin injury in the second period of Toronto’s impressive 7-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday evening….

“We’re concerned with our goaltending issue on two levels,” Burke said from California before the game. “We need to take care of the health of our goaltender’s health and stability over an 82-game schedule and we need to get a look at this kid.

“[Pogge] hasn’t been dominant at the AHL level, but we need to see what we have with him.”

Morning Line

“Yeah, he played, but he made mistakes at the end. He allowed what looked like a great effort to dribble right down his chin.

“Obviously you wish he had the last goal back and that’s kind of why he’s not ready to play in the NHL. You have to be able to play poised all the way.”

-Leafs coach Ron Wilson on goaltending prospect Justin Pogge.  More on Pogge by Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun.
