Abdelkader Will Have A Phone Hearing Today With The NHL

If you missed the hit or want to review it, watch it here at The Malik Report.

added 9:53am, from Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press,

The head is attached to the body. You attack one, you’ll affect the other, and to the naked eye, at the speed of hockey, it is damn hard to know how much contact is made where or when. So Justin Abdelkader saw a play develop, charged toward Anaheim’s Toni Lydman and plowed into him for a check. Hit his body, shoulder high, knocked Lydman up and down like a land mine explosion.

Was Lydman’s head affected? How could it not be? Was it a hit to the head? Clearly not. Did Abdelkader build up speed heading toward him? Don’t you have to? Did he continue that speed through the hit? Not at all. Did the refs call it clean — or did they call it dirty and throw Abdelkader out?

Yes — and yes.

On such things can playoff hockey turn.

Why Not Let Iginla Fight?

via Vicki Hall of Flames Insider,

Jarome Iginla still can’t figure out why the linesmen refused to let him fight it out last night with Justin Abdelkader.

In a sight familiar to Calgary Flames fans, the captain doffed his helmet and gloves late in the third period and readied himself to due battle with the six-foot-one, 215 pounder.

His goal? To exact revenge for an earlier shoulder check to the head of the recently-concussed Rene Bourque.

“I’m not sure,” Iginla said. “I really didn’t like the hit on Bourquey. That’s what I was thinking.”

With the linesmen escorting both players to the penalty box, Abdelkader could be seen shouting: “I’m not f-ing scared of you. I’m not f-ing scared of you.”

If you missed the hit last night, watch it below…

SCF “Unknowns” Taking Spotlight

From Doug Harrison at CBC:

At the start of this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs, NHL fans in Detroit and Pittsburgh probably could have predicted with confidence that Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin would be at, or near, the top of the scoring race and Nicklas Lidstrom would lead all defencemen in points.

Further from the thoughts of the most ardent fans were the names of Detroit rookie forwards Justin Abdelkader and Ville Leino, along with Pittsburgh defenceman Mark Eaton and forward Craig Adams.

But each contributed on the scoresheet, on special teams, in the faceoff circle or simply with their presence to help the Red Wings and Penguins advance to the NHL championship final for the second consecutive season.

from Larry Wigge of NHL.com,

Justin Abdelkader has almost always played close to his home in Muskegon. So scoring an insurance goal in his first Stanley Cup Final game with the Detroit Red Wings was like heaven on earth….

“It’s pretty crazy ... first Stanley Cup Final game and I get a goal. Wow! My family and buddies I grew up with are never going to believe this,” the 22-year-old said after his third-period goal helped the Detroit Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. “I’ve played on every stop on I-96 from Muskegon to Detroit, so you can’t believe the great taste I have in my mouth after savoring that one….

“He’s big. He’s strong. A tremendous skater. You could say he’s been on our radar for a long time,” Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland said. “Not to say he won’t score goals, because he was pretty productive at Michigan State and at Grand Rapids (AHL). But we see him as a physical player who someday we envision as a shutdown forward, someone who can help neutralize the other team’s best forwards.

“That job may not sound glamorous, but to the Red Wings, it’s an essential part of winning—one of those important puzzle pieces.”

Abdelkader Signs With Wings

from College Hockey News,

Justin Abdelkader, the Most Outstanding Player of the 2007 Frozen Four for Michigan State, has decided to forgo his final year of college eligibility, signing an amateur tryout agreement with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings.

Abdelkader, a second-round pick of the Red Wings in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft (42nd overall), could play this evening when Detroit plays Columbus.

“It’s an amazing feeling to realize my dream of being a Red Wing, and I would like to thank the Detroit organization,” Abdelkader said in a statement.

added 11:47am, via Mlive,

The move was made because the team is short on forwards, as Kirk Maltby suffered a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s game.

Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill said the team is close to signing Abdelkader to a three-year entry level contract. A deal must be done by Saturday for Abdelkader to be eligible for the playoffs.
