Jordan Staal Out 3-4 Months, Will Have Surgery On His Fractured Leg

RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced center Jordan Staal will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a fractured fibula in his right leg. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Kevin Logel and Dr. Marty Isbell at Raleigh Orthopaedic and recovery time is estimated at three to four months.

Staal, 26, was injured during the third period of Carolina’s exhibition game at Buffalo on Tuesday, when he got tangled up with Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native did not miss a single game during his first two seasons with the Hurricanes in 2012-13 and 2013-14, totaling 71 points (25g, 46a) in 130 games.

Hurricanes lose Jordan Staal to broken leg

From the Carolina Hurricanes:

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, tonight announced that center Jordan Staal suffered a broken bone in the lower portion of his right leg during the team’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Staal, 26, was injured during the third period when he got tangled up with Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges in the third period of Carolina’s 2-0 exhibition loss. Staal will return to Raleigh with the team on Wednesday and will be evaluated by team doctors on Thursday. A timetable for his recovery has yet to be determined.

Here's a rather grainy video of the incident:

Staal Brothers Will Start Wearing A Visor

from Katie Strang of ESPNNewYork,

Hurricanes captain Eric said his parents have been begging him to wear a visor for years; he plans to start on Tuesday.

"I've had someone extremely close to me go through something that you never want to see anyone go through," he told reporters.

Jordan said he and his brother discussed it together and decided to give it a try. And while there may be some time needed to get comfortable while wearing the new protective headgear, neither expects it to be a huge adjustment.

When the Hurricanes were in town to play the Rangers last week, Jordan told local media his mother made her opinions on the matter clear, but he said that "Staals can be stubborn sometimes."

Jordan Staal Agrees To Long-Term Contract With Carolina

via Jim Rutherford tweet,

I’m very pleased we’ll be announcing shortly that Jordan Staal has committed to make his home in Carolina for a long time.

via Bob McKenzie tweet,

Jordan Staal agrees to terms with CAR. 10 years, $60M. Done

added 11:34am,

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Jordan Staal on a 10-year contract extension. The deal begins with the 2013-14 NHL season and extends through the 2022-23 season, paying Staal $6 million per season.

“We are very pleased that Jordan has chosen to commit to the Hurricanes organization and to make North Carolina his home,” said Rutherford. “At 23 years old he is just starting to come into his prime, and he now represents a cornerstone of our franchise for the long term.”

Hurricanes, Jordan Staal Begin Conract Negotiations

via Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,

“We had our initial conversation last night,” Rutherford said. “Basically it was, ‘We made the trade, we know everybody is happy, now we need to start talking long-term.’ That being agreed on, now the work begins.”

Jordan Staal has one year remaining on a contract he had with the Pens that will pay him a $4.5 million salary next season. He’s due to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2012-2013 season.

Staal last week turned down a 10-year contract extension offered by the Pens that would have paid him a reported $60 million. Rutherford did not say what contract parameters – length and salary – the Canes or Staal might be interested in negotiating.

Krepelka said his policy was not to discuss contract negotiations, saying via email, “Jordan is excited about the opportunity that lies ahead of him in Carolina.”

Jordan Staal Traded To Carolina For Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin & 8th Pick 2012

Staal traded on his wedding day.

added 8:11pm,

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired center Jordan Staal from the Pittsburgh Penguins. In exchange for Staal, Carolina has traded center Brandon Sutter, defenseman Brian Dumoulin and its first-round pick (8th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the Penguins.

“Jordan is an elite two-way player who possesses a rare combination of speed, size, scoring ability and defensive responsibility,” said Rutherford. “For his young age, he has a wealth of NHL experience, including winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009. And he is obviously a natural fit for our team in joining our captain, his older brother Eric.

“We want to thank Brandon Sutter for his time in Carolina. He has been a very good player for our team, and we wish both Brandon and Brian the best as their careers continue.”

Jordan Staal Not Available

from Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Penguins general manager Ray Shero admitted today that numerous teams have inquired about the availability of center Jordan Staal.

Shero’s reply is simple: Staal isn’t available.

Despite steady speculation all summer that Staal could be traded this summer, Shero will attempt to sign the center to a long-term contract.

“You can’t have it both ways,” he said. “I can’t try to negotiate a contract with Jordan and a trade with another team at the same time. It doesn’t work that way. We don’t want to trade Jordan. We think we can sign him, and we’re going to try.”

Let’s Talk Jordan Staal

via Bob McKenzie tweets,

There’s a lot of Jordan Staal talk, where his long-term home is (PIT or elsewhere?). Being a year from UFA means he’s driving the bus.

PIT can’t get full market value in trade for J Staal if he’s one and done in the new locale. So Staal ultimately ends up wherever he wants.

I wouldn’t be surprised if all three Staal brothers eventually want to play on same team. Eric, BTW, has four more years on his CAR deal.

Which is to suggest Eric not going anywhere. Just a guess, but if Jordan isn’t a Penguin—not suggesting he’s not—a Cane seems logical.

Bottom line is in 1 yr, it’s entirely his call. That power/influence dramatically impacts potential move this summer.

Led By Crosby, 14 Penguins Players Deliver Season Tickets

image

Those of you who have read my blogs over the years know that I have always been very complimentary of how the Pittsburgh Penguins treat their fans… at least most of the time anyway.

They have always done a number of things to make the fans feel involved such as having town hall meetings to keep them posted on the rebuild that went on a few years back, generous giveaways such as the popular “Shirts off their Backs” promotion that sees every Penguins’ player give away his game used jersey to a fan during a post-game ceremony following the final home game of the regular season and much more.

Another Setback For Jordan Staal?

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

The Pittsburgh Penguins won’t know for sure until Monday, but it looks as though Jordan Staal has suffered a setback in his return from a broken hand.

Internet reports cropped up on Thursday that Staal may have re-broken the bone in his hand but Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma denied that on Friday saying there was some “calcification” issues.

“Jordan continues to progress in the timeline we had before,” Bylsma told Pittsburgh’s Tribune Review on Friday. “He’ll keep rehabbing on his current course.”

Jordan Staal Not Ready To Play Just Yet

from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

Jordan Staal looks powerful and mobile and confident when he is on the ice.

Looks a lot like a guy who could—and should—be in the Penguins’ lineup.

But things should not always be taken at face value, as Penguins coach Dan Bylsma pointed out Tuesday….

“It’s important to understand that he’s had a significant amount of time not working out, waiting for his foot to heal,” Bylsma said. “It’s important for him to spend time getting some of that workout time in, on the ice and off the ice.

“He looks good [during practices], but there’s still a ways to go before he gets close to that 100 percent range. He has to be allowed to continue to be able to work out off the ice and on the ice.”

Would You Play Jordan Staal Tonight?

from Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail,

There are regular humans, there are quick healers, and then there is Jordan Staal.

The hulking centre suffered torn ligaments in his foot this past Friday in a collision with Montreal’s P.K. Subban, but barely six days later, the 21-year-old is a possibility for Thursday night’s Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semi-final between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Canadiens.

Staal said he feels as if he could play – Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said he would be “a game-time decision” – and was blunt about the stakes of this game, where a victory would give the defending Stanley Cup Champions a 3-1 stranglehold on the series.

“This is definitely a breaking point game,” he said.

Jordan Staal Injured Tonight

Lates word on Staal’s injury was still being evaluated.

update 10:26pm, Staal will have more evaluation tomorrow.

added 11:35pm, from Shawn P. Roarke of NHL.com,

There is little question, though, that the injury has the potential to be serious. Staal is a true iron man for the Penguins and has not missed a regular-season game in the past three years. So for him to not be able to answer the bell, there is a deep concern that this injury could leave the big center sidelined for a long period of time.

“Any time a guy misses (time) in the playoffs, there is a good reason why,” Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said. “You never like to see anybody go off, period. It’s scary and you are always disappointed to see that, but that is the game we play and those are the things we work through.”

Copmetition In The Staal Family

from Damian Cox of the Toronto Star,

Shame on Steve Yzerman. The country was in a recession and he could’ve saved Hockey Canada some money.

After all, he really didn’t need to make three separate calls to the 807 area code in early July. One would have sufficed. Or maybe a conference call.

The three Staal boys, you see, were all together at their Thunder Bay “camps” – cottages in southern Ontario parlance – when the time came for Yzerman and his staff to start contacting those NHL players who would be invited to Team Canada’s summer orientation camp.

Brother vs. Brother

from TSN,

Eric and Jordan Staal are about to go where only the Espositos, the Plagers and the McCrearys have gone before.

When the puck drops Monday night on TSN for the opening game of the Carolina Hurricanes/Pittsburgh Penguins series, it will mark only the fifth time in NHL history that siblings have skated against each other in the Conference finals.  The last time a brother act such as this occurred was in 1974 when Phil Esposito’s Bruins faced Tony’s Blackhawks.  The rarity of the occurrence was not lost on the Staals.

“This is the best time of the year to play hockey,” said Eric in a conference call held by the NHL on Friday.  “When brothers are playing against each other in the Conference finals it’s exciting not only four yourselves but for the rest of your family for sure.”

Penguins Extend Staal

The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with center Jordan Staal on a new four-year contract, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

The new contract goes into effect at the start of the 2009-10 season and will run through 2012-13. Staal, 20, will play the remainder of this season under the terms of his entry-level contract.  He has played 204 games with the Penguins over three NHL seasons, scoring 52 goals and 39 assists for 91 points, along with 98 penalty minutes

added 12:11pm, TSN reporting 4 years, $16M.

added 12:21pm, via Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The team’s salary cap hit will be $4 million per season, with Staal earning $3.5 million each of the first two seasons and $4.5 million each of the ensuing two seasons.

“He’s agood yong player,” general manger Ray Shero said. “We’ve always wanted to re-sign him. His best years are ahead of him.”

added 12:51pm, Empty Netters chimes in,

...this clearly doesn’t bode well for those who would like to get a world-class first-line scoring winger for Sidney Crosby, including potentially Crosby himself. Given the uncertainty of how much the NHL’s salary cap could rise or even fall in subsequent seasons, locking up a talent like Staal to a long-term deal obviously sucks up a significant portion of whatever cap room Shero has to work with.

Trade Staal Now

from Mark Madden of the Beaver County Times,

It’s too early to complain, but…

Crosby doesn’t have any quality wingers.

Actually, it’s not too early to complain about that, or to do something about it….

Penguins GM Ray Shero should trade Jordan Staal for some quality help at wing, and do it sooner, not later. Staal, 20, is a major talent with tons of potential. He plays hard two-way hockey and does everything he’s asked. Staal could play for my team any day.

Not The Time To Be Talking Staal Contract

from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

(Jordan) Staal is adamant that he wants to remain with the Penguins. “When you’re winning, there’s no better feeling,” he said. “I want to be on a winning team and I want to be part of this organization, there’s no question about it.”

But economic realities sometimes force clubs and players to make unpleasant decisions.

Shero has no reservations about negotiating during the season and believes that reaching an agreement with Staal won’t require protracted talks. Still, he acknowledged there are no guarantees.

How Much Is Jordan Staal Worth

from Seth Rorabaugh of Empty Netters,

Which brings us to Jordan Staal who, according to rumors, is related to Eric in some fashion.

He’s a restricted free agent after this season. How does he get his first big pay day?

Does he need to hit the 30 goal/60 point mark? Does he essentially need to be Ryan Malone’s replacement on one of the first two lines? Does he need to ride shotgun on the wing of Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin? Does he need continue his sterling defensive play?

If you ask us, the answer is yes to all these questions. This is why we expect a big season out of Staal.

more

from Kevn Allen of Mucking & Grinding,

Staal said he understands why Therrien plays him on the third line, “he believes it’s a better fit at center for me and we were winning games.”

He hasn’t even talked to Therrien about moving up permanently to the wing. “But for my future I believe I’m a top six guy and I want to play up there,” he said. “I want to fit somewhere in that puzzle. Hopefully I can stick around in Pittsburgh and find a good spot.”

Trouble Brewing with Therrien

From Steve Simmons at the Toronto Sun,

...there is a brewing problem between coach Michel Therrien and some of his players—a number of them despise playing for him.

No one will choose the Stanley Cup final as a forum to call out their coach but there are far too many whispers out there that too many players can’t stand working for—or with—Therrien.

If that isn’t an issue to be dealt with immediately, it is certainly something that will grow with time. Brooks Orpik, the free agent defenceman who will be coveted by many teams after July 1, has told people he will not re-sign in Pittsburgh if Therrien is the coach. Jordan Staal, the terrific young player who lives in the shadow of Crosby and Evgeni Malkin—but is poised to bust out as one of the most complete centres in hockey—is another Therrien complainer.

He’s Come a Long Way in a Short Time

From Dan Rosen at NHL.com,

Instead of playing in Peterborough the last two seasons, [Jordan] Staal has made it big with the Pittsburgh Penguins, so big that now he’s the first teenager to play in the Stanley Cup Final since Dainius Zubrus did it as a 19-year-old with Philadelphia in 1997.

“This is what I have always dreamt about doing, so I haven’t thought about missing anything else,” Staal told NHL.com. “The only thing I would miss is the Cup if we don’t win it. There is no other place I’d rather be.”

That he’s already here is quite an amazing story.

To clear up some conflicting reports and rumors, a quick note about Eric’s and Jordan Staal’s status in the wake of the unfortunate death of their grandfather.

Eric Staal has left Team Canada at the World Championships to join his family and will understandably be missing his game scheduled for Wednesday.  Jordan Staal is said to be playing tonight for the Pittsburgh Penguins, then flying home briefly tomorrow to attend the funeral.  He isn’t expected to miss any games.

Interview Transcript: The Staal Brothers

Today, the NHL arranged a teleconference call for the media, speaking with the Staal brothers: Eric of the Carolina Hurricanes, Marc of the New York Rangers and Jordan of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pittsburgh has already clinched a spot in the playoffs, and Carolina leads their division and the Rangers are sixth in the East. If all three clubs make the playoffs, the brothers would become the first set of three brothers to compete in the post-season since 1992 when and the Brotens (Aaron, Neil and Paul) and the Sutters (Brent, Rich and Ron) all competed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

    Q.    Marc and Jordan, I think you guys faced in each in the OHL Playoffs a few years back. I was wondering for each of you what your most vivid memory of that season was competing against each other, if there were any memorable one-on-one battles?

Pens Struggling

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

The Pittsburgh Penguins can say all they want about how they’re still pleased with the development of Jordan Staal, but the fact remains Staal has been one of the major disappointments of the early season.

Of course, he’s not alone on the Penguins who, if you can believe it, go into Tuesday night’s games with the fourth-worst winning percentage in the NHL.

Pens Not Worried About Staal Slump

from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Several adjustments have played a factor in Staal’s scoring slump. He has worked as a center most of this season after playing on the wing last year. Also, he is no longer skating alongside Evgeni Malkin, who assisted on 11 of Staal’s 22 non-shorthanded goals last season.

Even though he was a minus-6 player with a 3.8 shooting percentage, Staal had the backing of his coach, who sees him “in more of a defensive role.”

“He is a good defensive forward,” Therrien said. “He surprised a lot of people with his offensive numbers. I was not expecting that.

“We would like him to have more goals, but he is working hard. I am not worried about him at all.”

Staal Cases Settled

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

Penguins center Jordan Staal yesterday accepted a plea deal through attorneys that resolves his case in Cook County, Minn., stemming from a late, loud bachelor party for his brother Eric.

Cook County prosecutor Tim Scannell said in an e-mail interview that Jordan Staal, 19, accepted a deal in which he pled guilty to reduced charges of petty misdemeanor disorderly conduct and underage drinking. He will pay $737 in fines.

Scannell said Eric Staal, a center for Carolina, accepted a similar deal, without the underage drinking charge.
