Ottawa Blame Game
by Alanah McGinley on 02/12/09 at 02:38 PM ET

From TSN:
According to the Camden Courier-Post, [former coach John] Paddock feels general manager Bryan Murray should be in the crosshairs if Senators owner Eugene Melnyk hands out any more pink slips.
“I think now he’s next in line,” Paddock told the Courier-Post. “We were 14 games over .500 when I was fired. They’re seven under now. Somebody needs to take responsibility for that. Whether the coaches he hired and fired were good or not, they’re his players and they’re either not playing good or can’t play, one or the other.”
But Paddock, who is currently the head coach of the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms, doesn’t think coaching is the issue in the nation’s capital.
“The players are not very good, that’s the problem,” Paddock told the Courier-Post.

John Paddock Comes Full Circle
by Alanah McGinley on 10/10/08 at 02:47 PM ET

From Patrick Williams at The Hockey News:
Fans did not expect to see John Paddock stationed behind an AHL bench this season. And in no way did Paddock envision himself in such a role, either.
A scouting position with the Senators seemed Paddock’s likely role this season, some seven months after Ottawa dismissed him late in a turmoil-filled 2007-08 season. That turmoil cost the hockey veteran his long-awaited second NHL head-coaching job that had eluded him since he exited the same post with the Winnipeg Jets in the mid-1990s.
But as predictable as the hockey world can often be, it occasionally serves up something new, something different, and so Paddock returns for his first AHL coaching gig since his Binghamton Senators crashed in the 2005 Calder Cup playoffs.

Belarus Calls on Calgary Asst Coach Fleming

A translated report at an online Russian news site:
Wayne Fleming, a Canadian coach offered the job of head coach of Belarus’ flagship ice hockey team Dinamo Minsk, held a news conference in Minsk on Monday.
The coach said that he would make up his mind on the offer on June 4, describing his talks with the club and the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation as fairly constructive.
The 57-year-old Fleming, an assistant coach with the NHL’s Calgary Flames, said that he liked Minsk and expressed certainty that his family would find it comfortable to live in the city. [...]
He is the second Canadian coach to be offered the Dinamo Minsk job. John Paddock turned down the offer earlier this year.

Emery Should Apologize to Sens Fans
by Alanah McGinley on 03/06/08 at 03:19 PM ET

From Hugh Adami at The Ottawa Citizen,
Emery may have already offered heartfelt regrets to his teammates. We don’t know because that’s the type of thing that usually stays in the dressing room.
But we haven’t heard one peep from the goalie on how sorry he is after John Paddock was fired as coach by general manager Bryan Murray last week. Which is insulting considering how public Emery was in showing us a side that embarrassed the team and its fans, helped drive a wedge into the dressing room and eventually killed Paddock’s dream of bringing a Stanley Cup championship to this city. Paddock’s dismissal had much to do with his failure to corral a sulking, petulant Emery who kept blowing gaskets because he didn’t have the starting job anymore.

Paddock Points At Emery
by Paul on 03/02/08 at 03:57 PM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Paddock admitted he should have kicked Emery off the ice when he wasn’t working in practice to send a message to the team that you have to work hard to be rewarded with playing time.
In fact, Paddock said it’s his No. 1 regret and ultimately what probably cost him his job.
“One of the things I would do over is the (Emery) stuff. Not really the tardiness,” said Paddock in a conference call with reporters.

Paddock Not Happy With Officiating
by Paul on 01/15/08 at 02:26 PM ET

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,
But there was another guy Paddock thought had a brutal game, too. A guy in a different jersey. With stripes. Paddock didn’t call him out completely, but he sure did narrow the choices.
“I thought guys like (Christoph) Schubert and (Chris) Neil did a good job again, I thought they were finishing checks,” said Paddock. “I thought Chris Neil got one penalty in the first period probably because it was the third time he tried to hit somebody through the boards. That’s just disgusting by the referee. You’re supposed to hit them through the boards.”
The Senators went through the boards often—right into the box. The Senators were short-handed nine times against the Islanders and killed all but two of the penalties. They were awarded just three power plays of their own and converted one.
Afterward, Paddock claimed he was in “shock of how the game was officiated.” His opinion came on the heels of Steve Yzerman’s comments Saturday about inconsistent work by the men with whistles.

Pick It Up Boys
by Paul on 12/07/07 at 12:15 PM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Not only is Paddock looking to get more of a contribution from McAmmond and Donovan, the duo of centre Chris Kelly (one goal in 13 games) and winger Antoine Vermette (one goal in 14) haven’t done anything to earn extra ice time, either.
“I’ve said from the start I don’t want to play (Alfredsson) that much, but you have to do that during the course of a game,” said Paddock. “The other side of it is you have to develop roles for other players and they have to develop roles within the team. I think we’re still somewhat struggling for that.
“We’re still trying to find guys to contribute to the play at a little bit higher level and a little bit better in certain situations. You can’t be a two- or three-line team. We’re still searching for contributions from the third and fourth line.”

Paddock On His Goaltender
by Paul on 11/25/07 at 12:22 PM ET

Senators coach John Paddock on the goaltending of Martin Gerber last night…
from the Ottawa Citizen,
“I didn’t like the goals, it’s that simple,” he said, also referring to the sharp-angle goals from R.J. Umberger and Scott Hartnell earlier in the game. “Those kinds of saves have to be made. Routine saves have to be made. He has been doing that all year, he has been dong a good job for us all year and he has also made the spectacular saves. He’s just like half a dozen other guys on the team right now. He’s just not getting it done.
“I’m not happy with it at the moment, but I’m not overly concerned. You don’t go from having 13 wins and (one of the best) save percentages and just become bad. Those things happen. That will be turned around for sure.”

Alfredsson Suffering With Sore Groin

via the AP,
Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson has a groin injury and isn’t expected to play Saturday against Philadelphia.
Ottawa’s top scorer was injured during Thursday’s shootout loss to Pittsburgh. He had three assists in the game, but wasn’t able to take a shootout attempt.
Senators coach John Paddock says his captain is day-to-day, but “I don’t think that day-to-day includes playing tomorrow.”

Spezza Still Has Some Pain
by Paul on 11/13/07 at 10:06 AM ET

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,
Spezza said he’s still experiencing some pain, which can’t be a good sign. At least he’s got another couple of days before he’ll have to make a decision on the Buffalo game.
“The groin was a little bit sore as practice got going, but (my) wind felt pretty good. If I can take a positive from it, it’s that my wind hasn’t really left me. It hasn’t been that long off so I don’t anticipate that being a problem.”
Senators coach John Paddock isn’t sold yet.
While encouraged to see Spezza make it through practice, he said skating in practice and skating in a game are two different animals.
