Devils backup goaltender Johan Hedberg agrees that the size of some goaltenders’ equipment is excessive, but doesn’t think that reducing the pads again is the right way to go.
“The pads are not the problem,” Hedberg said today. “The problem is the pants and the chest protectors, arms and shoulders.”
Hedberg believes that that reducing the length of the pad above the knee and having more conforming knee pads wouldn’t necessarily create room in the five hole, but it might expose the goaltenders to being hit in the knee more and possible injury.
“The way you play on your knees these are good for preventing injuries,” Hedberg said of the current knee pads.
That said, Hedberg fully believes that reducing size of other parts of the goaltenders’ equipment is something that needs to be done.
For the Atlanta Thrashers, a team with just one playoff appearance in ten National Hockey League seasons (and not a single post-season victory to their credit), the time for a fresh start was clearly at hand.
By first turning a negative into a positive in moving on from superstar sniper Ilya Kovalchuk late last season and then raiding the cabinet of the cap-crunched Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta begins their new era, under both a new general manager and head coach in Rick Dudley and Craig Ramsay, with a wealth of promising youth and several veterans with recent championship experience.
They may no longer boast an individual showstopper but that formula wasn’t producing a consistent winner in Blueland anyway (and that alone rarely does as much anywhere). The post-Kovalchuk Thrashers appear to be headed for greener pastures, though there will be that little issue of replacing his 45+ goals, of course.

Johan Hedberg signs w/NJ #Devils. 1 yr. contract effective $1.5M including bonuses, no trade
from the Atlanta Thrashers,
The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed goaltender Johan Hedberg to a multi-year contract, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
“It’s been a long month, but it was great today to come here when everybody else comes and not three hours before,” Lehtonen said. “It’s fun to be a part of the team.”
And suddenly it’s a team that will have three capable goalies. According to general manager and interim head coach Don Waddell, Lehtonen’s return to the lineup won’t be rushed. In the past, he said, Lehtonen might have been hurried to action this week. But not now.
Johan Hedberg is coming off his first shutout with the Thrashers and will get the start tonight against Tampa Bay. He’s 4-0 in his last five starts and with his shutout in Carolina, dropped his goals against average to 2.38 in November.
Rookie Ondrej Pavelec is 3-1 in four starts and has a 2.71 GAA on the season. His only other loss came in a relief appearance against Ottawa.
