Jim Montgomery Enters A Rehab Program

from Matthew DeFranks of the Dallas Morning News,

Here is Montgomery’s full statement:

“Losing my job as head coach of the Dallas Stars last month was a wake-up call. It was also the appropriate call. I let the team’s front office, staff and players down. More importantly, I let my wife and my family down. The team’s decision to end my role forced me to look into the mirror and decide whether I wanted to continue living a damaging lifestyle or get help. I decided to get help. I turned to professionals in the field of alcohol abuse for their guidance and counseling. It has been an overwhelming and a very humbling experience knowing that I am not alone.

“Today, with the unconditional support of my wife and family, and many close friends, I took another step forward by admitting myself into an inpatient residential program, where I intend to take the steps to be a better husband, father, friend, coach and mentor – one day at a time. It’s a process I am committed to. As I do this, I ask that my family’s privacy be respected. Thanks, Monty.”

Stars general manager Jim Nill also released a statement to The Dallas Morning News Friday afternoon.

Don’t Put Jim Montgomery On The Hot Seat Just Yet

from Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News,

It’s not fair (or even a good idea) for a city to have dueling hot seats for coaches, so there is no place for the Stars’ Jim Montgomery on one right now. Besides, we are talking about seven games out of 82 after a rather special rookie campaign for the Dallas coach.

So even with the Stars having won just one of their first seven games, no one here is suggesting change or even thoughts about the next coach in a sport where change is always right around the corner. Montgomery did two things well last year in leading the Stars to the seventh game of the second round against St. Louis.

He wasn’t Ken Hitchcock, and that was an important step one. Players always need a breath of fresh air after a run with Hitch, and that’s not to suggest Monty was some sort of pushover for this team, coming out of the college ranks as he did. But he was different, and he explained things and they worked pretty well. On top of that, the Stars had Ben Bishop in net where he finished second in Vezina Trophy balloting behind his former Tampa Bay backup Andrei Vasilevskiy.

This year Bishop has struggled, the power play (1 for 22) has been invisible and the Stars have positioned themselves along the bottom of the West with a 1-5-1 record.

Afternoon Line- Jim Montgomery

“On the ice, for the Dallas Stars fan, if you can think of an adjective of what we’re going to look like, it’s going to be relentless. We’re going to be a puck possession team and we’re going to try and make plays everywhere on the ice. When we don’t have the puck, we’re going to pressure you so we can get it back and make more plays.”

“I think you look at the championship teams that have won in the NHL,” he said. the teams play a certain way. There’s structure to their game, but there’s creativity and flair to it, too. You have to let horses run. Everyone should look the same when we don’t have the puck and when we do have the puck, everyone should play to their strengths.”

-Jim Montgomery, head coach of the Dallas Stars.  Rory Boylen of Sportsnet has more.
