A Multiyear Contract For Vancouver GM Jim Benning

from NHL.com,

Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning signed a multiyear contract Wednesday.

"I'm excited about the direction of our team and the depth and talent we continue to build," Benning said. "I believe we are on the right track and I am pleased to continue the work we started four years ago when we set out to build a championship team."

Benning is in his fourth season as general manager of the Canucks after replacing Mike Gillis, who was fired after the 2013-14 season, and is in the final season of his contract. Before coming to Vancouver, he had spent eight seasons as assistant GM of the Boston Bruins and helped build the team that defeated the Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.

Jim Benning Deserves A Contract Extension

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,

There were some encouraging signs before this season but there was also a belief this team was at least a year away from turning a corner.

That means they were staring down the barrel of another bottom-five finish. That would have meant more empty seats and further fan alienation.

It’s hard to see how Jim Benning would have survived another season like that.

But based on what we’ve seen so far, the rebuild appears to have been accelerated by a year. We’re not going through the whole organization but, based on what they have in Vancouver and what they have in the pipeline, there is ample reason to be optimistic about the future.

On that basis, Benning has earned a contract extension.

Morning Line- Jim Benning

“We have got good veteran leadership and they hold other players in the room accountable. I feel comfortable with everything, but I also know we are going to have to be a little bit better because it’s going to be a tight race in our division all year. We are going to have to start winning games to stay in the race.”

-Jim Benning, GM of the Vancouver Canucks.  More from Brad Ziemer at the National Post.

Canucks still looking to trade Kesler, but only at their price

The Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson happened to find himself  in an opportune situation on Thursday evening, and as such, he received an update on the Vancouver Canucks' attempts to trade Ryan Kesler:

Trevor Linden, the Canucks’ team president, [GM Jim] Benning and new coach Willie Desjardins were in serious conversation at a restaurant in downtown Philly Thursday night and hustled away.

“We’re talking to teams but if we don’t think we’re getting a fair deal we won’t do now…we’ll be happy to have him back. He’s a great player (that may be hyperbole; he’s a very good two-way centre),” said Benning, who knows every team’s prospect lists because he was a scout for the Bruins before he was an assistant GM, a scout like his dad Elmer, 73, who works for Montreal. “We do want NHL caliber players back (to offset his offence).”

For now, Anaheim’s sticking to their guns and keeping the No. 10 (Ottawa’s pick in the Bobby Ryan trade last year), but would trade their 26th. As it gets closer to the draft, maybe that changes. Certainly, Kesler fits better there (two-way player) than Jason Spezza, also on the trade block.

Benning does admit that he might get more for Kesler when the heat’s turned up at the trade deadline, than in the summer when nobody’s playing games.

“When you’re dealing a player of his stature at the trade deadline, that’s when you can really do well…teams feel they may only be one player away from winning. Teams might possibly give you more then, than in the summer when they aren’t playing hockey,” he said.

Matheson continues, and he goes into extensive detail as to what the Canucks might want from the Anaheim Ducks in a Kesler trade.

Getting To Know Jim Benning, The New GM For The Vancouver Canucks

from Ian MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun,

“I would say he was careful with his words,” Benning’s younger brother, Brian, said Wednesday from home in Edmonton. “I was a little more talkative. But it’s time to step out and lead, right? He’ll have no problems doing that.

“Go back the last three years and he has had numerous interviews (to be a general manager). He was going to wait until the time was right. I played in the U.S. and live in Edmonton now, and I recognize the significance of hockey in Canada. I’m glad he’s going to a great hockey town. I think it’s a great opportunity. The thing we’re most proud of is he has put the time in. He knows the draft, knows the importance of it. He knows everybody.”

Canuck president of hockey operations Trevor Linden said when he started six weeks ago that a paramount trait of his general manager would be a proven ability to evaluate players and identify talent. No wonder Benning’s name was mentioned from the beginning as the top candidate in Vancouver.

He is a scouting rink rat, a guy so addicted to assessing and projecting players that even in management Benning continued to attend many junior and college games.
