“I played the game how I wanted to and the way I thought was right, I wouldn’t change it now. And whatever happens, happens. You live life once, you make your decisions and you go with it. And I’m perfectly happy with it.”

“What can [the league] do? You’re never going to prevent concussions. It’s a physical sport. It’s a contact sport … You’re never going to get rid of it in hockey.

“They’ve done as much as they can with the protection and they’ve done as much as they can with the rules when they try to make sure that they can try to get guys to respect each other and protect each other.”

Morning Line- Jeremy Roenick On Claude Giroux

"If I was sitting in front of Claude Giroux right here today, I would say, 'You need to make amends and you need to have a bounce-back season and show everybody why you have been one of the better players over the last five years and last year was just a bad-luck situation. This team is going to run on Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds and Jake Voracek.

"If Claude is watching right now, I love you to death, put it back together, show everybody why you're one of the best competitors in the game and get back up into that top-scoring aspect. And don't worry about slumps and don't worry about what people think of you, just be Claude Giroux. And if he does that, this team is going to prosper."

Should Jeremy Roenick Be In The Hockey Hall Of Fame?

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

The Case For

Roenick is among a group of players whose career numbers suggest the Hall of Fame when viewed from afar. Drafted 8th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks straight out of high school, Roenick had 1,213 points in 1,363 regular-season games while playing a tough-nosed style that also saw him collect 1,463 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, he collected an impressive 53 goals and 122 points in 154 games through his 18-year career. He had a stellar international career as a junior and won a silver medal with Team USA in Salt Lake City in 2002, collecting five points in six games on the way to the U.S. losing to Canada in the gold-medal game. He was also with the U.S. team that finished second at the 1991 Canada Cup and was named to the all-tournament team. Three times in his career, Roenick topped the 100-point mark and twice scored more than 50 goals. Always a fan favorite, Roenick was also highly regarded for his charitable and humanitarian work.

Evening Line- Jeremy Roenick

"I think it'll happen, I think it can work. There's a lot of money there, and I think a lot of people would love to go to Vegas to watch their favorite team play. It wouldn't be bad to be the first pro sports team in Vegas. I think the NHL likes to be the pioneers in that aspect."

"I think they’re one of the strongest built teams in the league. With them, they have amazing star power surrounded with good quality core players. The addition of Brad Richards coming over there as a role player who can help on the power play and be a good leader, brings another experienced guy into a locker room of winners."

"I think team has done a very good job of putting together the pieces and with Kane and Toews signing these mega-deals they’ll be playing with so much confidence. There’s no competition between the two. They are both top five players getting paid like it and it shows the loyalty that the Blackhawks have become known for and [for] building championships."

Jeremy Roenick On The Flyers Goaltending And Defense

from Mary Clarke of CSNPhilly,

If they're going to win the Cup, Roenick believes they'll have to do it with a different goaltender.

"I like Steve Mason," Roenick said on Philly Sports Talk, "but I don’t think Steve Mason is the answer to winning a Stanley Cup."

Mason posted a 33-18-7 record, .917 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against average in his first full year with the Flyers. The 26-year-old once won the Calder Memorial Trophy, in 2008-09, as the league's rookie of the year with the Blue Jackets. But he regressed in his next three and a half seasons before Columbus eventually shipped him to the Flyers for Michael Leighton and a third-round pick.

"I think you need an upper echelon defenseman, I think you need an upper echelon goaltender," Roenick said. "The Flyers do not have [either].

"I think that’s something that you’re going to have to look at in terms of improving your team."

Video- Sundin And Roenick Honored By Their Respective Teams

from NHL.com,

Mats Sundin thanked his family, teammates, coaches and the fans of Toronto before a banner honoring his No. 13 was raised to the rafters of the Air Canada Centre prior to the Maple Leafs’ game against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

The Leafs also honored Sundin, the franchise’s all-time leader in goals (420) and points (987) by having all of their players wear jerseys with his uniform number during warmups. He was saluted with a video presentation of career highlights and a roaring, tumultuous ovation when he was introduced to the sellout crowd – many of whom wore jerseys with his name and number.

In Defense of Jeremy Roenick

Well, I’ve clearly been noticing the amount of heat JR has been getting lately, after this week’s earlier announcement that he would be included as a “Legend” in NHL 12. “Outraged” would be the best term to describe most fan’s reactions to this announcement. I will admit, that I too was a bit surprised at this news, considering I put a lot of time and thought into my own short list of candidates who I felt would be worthy of such an honor. Of that list of mine, 7 of the 9 players I named ended up finding their way onto the NHL 12 Legends list. The two exceptions were Roenick and Salming.

NHL 12 Update: New Legends Video, Winnipeg Uniform Info, and New Quick Clips

image

Earlier this afternoon, some NHL 12 fans on the internet found a new Legends video, posted exclusively on the EB Games (now GameStop) webpage for NHL 12. However, the video was kind of “hidden”, thankfully over the time it took for me to write this update, there has been a new link to this new video released by EA Sports in an exclusive with GameStop’s official site, which makes it much easier to find, and is of much better quality that the original one that was found.

Read on, as I’ll provide a link to this new video ( UPDATE - Days later, I finally have the video included in this post ), which reveals several bits of juicy new info on the Legends, including what their team uniforms look like, some info about unlocking them, and best of all, what their overall ratings will be! Also included in this update is some additional news about the Jets’ new sweaters potentially not being in the game upon release, and some new quick-clips about HUT and the EASHL.

Do You Compare Roenick To Cherry?

from James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail,

So while some of Roenick’s running mates during his playing career such as Brendan Shanahan, Steve Yzerman and Joe Nieuwendyk have gigs with the league or as general managers, JR’s far more comfortable being this generation’s loudmouth TV personality.

“It’s crazy busy,” Roenick said. “I’m on the road probably five nights out of seven during the week.

“I enjoy it. I get recognized a lot more now than I did as a player because I’m in front of the audience every night, I don’t have equipment on, people see what I look like. My speaking engagements have gone up. When you have an opinion and you’re able to get it out like I do on a nightly basis, more people are going to tune in and you’re going to get attention. I like that aspect of it.”

Already tabbed as potentially becoming the American answer to Don Cherry, Roenick’s profile should soar to new heights given NBC’s 10-year deal with the league includes new pre- and postgame shows, 100 regular-season games and far more playoff coverage.

He simply grins when he hears the Cherry comparison being made.

NHL 12 Update: Salming, Roenick, and Roy Confirmed as Legends

My apologies for not breaking this news the moment it dropped, as was the case yesterday. I happened to oversleep by a few hours this morning… anyway, here is the scoop. First, in a video released on EA’s Sports Swedish Facebook Page, further confirmed yesterday’s news about Yzerman, and then went on to reveal that Toronto Maple Leafs’ Swedish defenseman, Borje Salming, will also be one of the included Legends in NHL 12.

NHL Partying in Vegas

From Melissa Arseniuk of Postmedia News via Faceoff.com:

Meanwhile, another party raged further south on the Strip, as Anaheim Duck Corey Perry hosted an awards kickoff party at Chateau Nightclub and Gardens inside the Paris Hotel and Casino. Coincidentally — and, some would say, oh-so-conveniently — Perry’s party coincided with the club’s ongoing $100,000 bikini contest, which provided plenty of eye candy throughout the evening.

The 2010-2011 Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy winner arrived at the club in true Las Vegas style, rolling in with a 10-person entourage.

The group was given a table on the VIP stage complete with bottle service, but Perry didn’t have a single drink. Suffice to say he should be relatively fresh for what could be a big day for him: He is up for both the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league MVP and the Ted Lindsay Award.

Also at Chateau Tuesday night was nine-time all-star Jeremy Roenick, who more than made up for Perry’s alcohol abstinence, and once again proved himself a perennial party boy. The retired star continued his NHL awards tradition and partied hard, double-fisting drinks in the VIP — Champagne in one hand and vodka-cranberry in the other.

Video- Sharks Postgame Reacts To Roenick’s Remark About Marleau

via David Pollak of the Mercury News,

Former Shark Jeremy Roenick, now a commentator for Versus, characterized Patrick Marleau’s performance as “gutless” and questioned his former teammate’s heart.

When it was suggested that Marleau might be injured, Roenick, who has criticized Marleau in the past as well, said: “Yeah, he’s hurt—right here,” circling his heart.

In my opinion, if you call a player gutless as Roenick did of Marleau, you better back it up with proof, which he did not.

Final Thoughts on Raleigh and All-Star Weekend

The intent of my trip to Raleigh for coverage of All-Star Weekend was simple: Get a feel for the experience from a professional perspective as well as monitor the pulse of the fans, chat up some players I don’t get to see all that often and also those I see on a regular basis in a different element, do some networking and, as Boss Man Paul continually reminded me to do throughout the weekend, have a little fun.

Looking back, that final component is exactly what I’ll remember most about the adventure and my guess is that most that attended All-Star Weekend – be they fans, players, media, league execs, sponsors or those belonging to some other miscellaneous category – would probably say the same thing.

Raleigh, as many others have opined before me, did a wonderful job as a host. The locals were as excited for the event as they were prepared, welcoming, happy and proud of their city, as well they should be. I’d never spent any significant time in these parts in the past but it will definitely be worth another stop in the future.

This being my first big league event, I had consulted with several people who have experienced something of this nature in the past in the weeks leading up to the trip and, while a few cautioned that an occasion of this magnitude could be slightly intimidating at times, I didn’t find that to be true at all for myself and I’m not sure many other first-timers would say otherwise. The vibe, from the moment I picked up my credentials on Friday morning, was light-hearted. At the same time, the entire operation throughout the weekend was first-class. Kudos to the NHL, the city of Raleigh and the Carolina Hurricanes for pulling everything off in fine fashion.

Take The ASG For What It Is

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has promised that NHL All-Star weekend 2012 in Canada’s capital will be a “once-in-a-lifetime, weekend long celebration of all that is great about hockey, the NHL and our city.”

Considering the wonderful job done by the folks in Raleigh who just staged a great show for the fans this past weekend, those are some big words.

But, much to the dismay of intolerant hockey purists and shortsighted all-star game detractors everywhere, one thing Melnyk hasn’t promised is a David Backes vs. Zdeno Chara slugfest.

We’re a year away from the festivities at Scotiabank Place, which means we’re a year away from the obligatory week long bashfest of the event by some mainstream media people who apparently weren’t required to take business and marketing classes in journalism school.

Roenick Says Halak Wants A Trade

from ESPNChicago,

“The trade deadline comes up [March 3], and it’s going to be very interesting to see what’s going to happen,” Roenick said on “The Waddle & Silvy Show.” “Especially with a guy in Montreal who is playing unbelievably up here [at the Olympics for Slovakia], and wants a trade because of the goalie situation with [Carey] Price.

“Halak wants out. Chicago would be a perfect place for a guy like Halak to be traded to, free up a little cap space maybe, but also get a goaltender who could push you over the top and win a Cup.”

Roenick Adds ‘Life’ To NBC Broadcast

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,

Jeremy Roenick’s been waiting 40 years for his close-up. Now that he’s finally in the tight focus of Mr. DeMille - okay, NBC TV - the garrulous Roenick is saying, “I am big. It’s hockey that’s gotten small.” It promises to be a bumptious ride.

Roenick fills the former-player quotient on NBC’s Sunday afternoon NHL hockey intermissions. Along with Mike Milbury and Pierre McGuire, it’s promising to be the liveliest network TV panel around this season. Canadians know Milbury and McGuire, of course. Milbury is the highly entertaining spokesman for hockey’s antediluvian element, Don Cherry without the pandering. McGuire is the sport’s Beeker, a hockey technocrat prone to loud bursts of enthusiasm between team benches.

But Roenick promises to be the agitator, the rabble rouser, the shift disturber on the panel.

Roenick Talks Current Affairs In The NHL

from TSN,

When asked to share his opinion on Stars forward James Neal’s hit on Blue Jackets winger Derek Dorsett, which cost Neal two-games via disciplinary action from the NHL, Roenick didn’t pull any punches in labeling the Stars’ leading goal scorer.

‘‘If Neal would have done this 20 years ago, he would have been blackballed from the league,’’ said Roenick. ‘‘If you’re going to get challenged, then drop your gloves and go to it - fight, but don’t come back later on and then give a cheap shot to a guy who has already challenged you.

‘‘To me, that’s kind of gutless and I’m sure a lot of guys in the league think that’s gutless also.’‘

“I’ve seen a lot of mishandling of money, mishandling of arbitration cases, mishandling of hiring help for the PA that has been a waste of the PA’s money. They need to do something right now to get some legitimacy back into the organization and bring some strength to the players and bring some honesty and trustworthiness between the players and the people who are heading the PA. Roenick Talks Chicago

from Bob Verdi of the Chicago Tribune,

Jeremy Roenick has numerous options for what to do with the rest of his life, including stage, screen and television. But he will clear a busy schedule for one particular job title, should it be offered.

“I began my career with the Blackhawks and should have ended it with the Blackhawks,” he was saying the other day from his home near Phoenix. “And there should have been no in between the Blackhawks. I should never have left. I didn’t want to leave. I loved Chicago and felt loved in Chicago.

“Anyway, I’ve seen what they’ve done for some retired guys like me. Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito, Denis Savard. They’re ambassadors for the club. I could go for that. As long as we’re at it, it would be cool if they retired my number, 27, too. I would be honored.”

Does Roenick Belong In The HHOF?

via Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

• What does it say about Nikolai Zherdev, when he’s only 24 years old, is one goal shy of 100 in the National Hockey League, is a free agent, and only teams with 10-foot poles want to touch him?

• Yes, Jeremy Roenick could talk and make you laugh, but the guy could play, too. A bunch. He’s borderline Hall of Fame and may be able to talk his way in.

• The math on Jerry Reinsdorf’s apparent offer for the Coyotes is somewhat startling. It goes something like this: He wants $23 million US, or thereabouts, in lease concessions from the City of Glendale, wants to deal Wayne Gretzky out of the game by not paying him his $8 million a year, and get some $15 million in revenue sharing annually from the NHL. In other words, he figures that, with $43 million in handouts, he has a chance to break even.

Not Many Like Roenick

from Adam Proteau of The Hockey News,

Sure, Roenick polarizes people in hockey circles to a degree few other NHLers have in the league’s history. Even the THN offices has its share of J.R.-loathers; when we caught wind of his looming announcement last week, there weren’t many tears being shed for a player whose best on-ice years ended when his stint as a Philadelphia Flyer did in 2004.

But focusing on the guy’s theatrics and dismissing his contributions because you believe all hockey players ought to be brainless drones with zippers for mouth-holes is a convenient way to overlook the stunning array of on-ice achievements that should make Roenick a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame one day.

In his heyday with the Chicago Blackhawks, Roenick put up two 50-goal seasons and three 100-plus point campaigns. He played in nine all-star games, two Olympic tournaments, one Canada Cup and one World Cup. He retires as the league’s third-best American-born amasser of both goals (513) and points (1,216) and is the NHL’s 39th-best point-producer of all time.

Roenick will leave the game with his dignity, his milestone and his name in lights. And though he hasn’t announced his retirement just yet, it sounds as though the hard-checking star finally is checking out.

“I’m really not on the fence,” Roenick said. “I really know what I’m doing. I’m just not going to announce it yet.”

For 20 seasons, Roenick gave the NHL what it sorely needs: a marketable American with huge personality. He was flashy, on ice and off. He said lots of interesting things. He will leave as one of the better American-born players of all time.

How To Give An Interview By J.R.

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,

“There are two ways players can be better interviews,” Roenick said. “No. 1: speak your mind. If you feel passionately about something, then grow a pair, grow a thick skin, and say so. Don’t be afraid that you’re going to say the wrong thing. If it comes from your heart, if you know that you’re right, step up and let people hear what you have to say.

“And No. 2: for christ’s sake – for christ’s sake – show some (expletive) enthusiasm during interviews,” Roenick said. “I see too many interviews where young guys say the same thing night after night after night. It’s (expletive).

“You know what, guys? Don’t just give us the usual clichés. Don’t do interviews where your eyes are just staring off into space when they should be looking into the camera. Say something funny once in a while! And if somebody scores a sick goal, it’s OK to say ‘damn, my teammate scored a sick goal!’ ”

Roenick Having Shoulder Surgey

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,

Two injury updates from the morning skate:

Joe Pavelski could be in the lineup against L.A. on Monday night, but just in case he isn’t, the Sharks plan to call up another forward from Worcester. Nothing official yet, but Jamie McGinn would be a pretty good guess.

And Jeremy Roenick will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder tomorrow. That decision means he’s definitely going to be out of action longer than the three-week forecast given yesterday, but just how much longer won’t be known until the procedure is completed and the training staff knows what it’s up against.

I wonder if the Sharks would attempt to bring up Claude Lemieux who would have to clear waivers first?

Roenick:  T-Shirt Maven

from Cecile Nguyen at SanJoseSharks.com,

Roenick helped start Muze Clothing in 2004 with a few friends while golfing and plays a large role in the t-shirt clothing company.

“I’m a big part of Muze,” Roenick said. “I’m part owner, part designer and part ‘okayer.’ I’m pretty much a little of everything. I have a big say in what happens and am the name and the face of the company.”

According to Muze’s official website, the t-shirt company “spans generations and demographics and unites people on the basis of love for film, a sense of humor, a creative use of a popular line.”

The concept behind Muze clothing is to combine classic movie quotes with fashion. Muze features popular quotes from Pulp Fiction, Caddyshack and Goodfellas to name a few.

Roenick The Actor

from Roger Ross at San Jose Sharks.com,

Roenick already had done some on-camera work, listing previous appearances with “Hack” and “Ghost Whisperer,” and this week he will begin shooting a scene in “Leverage”, a new TNT production.

So how does a full-time NHLer plan on being a future full-time actor?

“I’m good friends with producer-director Paul Bernard and he wants to turn me into an actor when I’m done with hockey,” Roenick said. “He and his brother Tom are big producers in Los Angeles.”

CBA No Loss For Players

From Joe Starkey at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

“If people are going to chastise professional athletes who are making a lot of money, they need to look at the deal we are probably going to end up signing,” [Jeremy] Roenick said.

As if the players would be forced to subsist on food stamps and ramen noodles.

Now look: Thomas Vanek makes $10 million, and the average salary has officially cracked $1.9 million, passing the pre-lockout figure of $1.83 million.

A crushing loss for the players?

“If there were those who viewed it in the words you use,” says player agent Don Meehan, “I don’t know how they could view it that way now.”

Roenick Says He Will Be Back

from CBC,

Jeremy Roenick confirmed he’ll return to San Jose next season for another run at the Stanley Cup.

“I think it would be a shame to go one year and out,” the 19-year veteran said at the bittersweet conclusion of his first year in teal.

Roenick also echoed the dual sentiments of every coach and player in the room. He insisted the Sharks will be unfulfilled until they advance further in the postseason, but they don’t need major changes to get there.

What a Difference a Year Makes

From James Duthie at The Good, The Bad and The Duthie:

Exactly one year ago, Jeremy Roenick strolled into our studio for the start of the second round of the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Not surprisingly, it was a Rock Star entrance.  He was late (plane’s fault), arriving just as our first intermission was beginning.  He had not rehearsed, not been given a single tip on which camera to look at, how long to talk for, or how to deal with a producer yapping in his ear.

Of course, none of that mattered.  The only thing Roenick does better than play hockey is…talk.  He was more comfortable in the first 30 seconds on television than some are after 10 years in the business.  He said smart things, dumb things, outrageous things.  He waved his arms madly in the air like he was in the middle of a dance floor whenever we first came live to studio.

Clean Living Pays Off

From Greg Beacham at the AP (via USA Today):

When Roenick postponed retirement for another Stanley Cup run, he also gave up alcohol for the year. Roenick doesn’t have a drinking problem, yet the 38-year-old forward partly credits his teetotaling for his remarkable resurgence this season, capped by a spectacular Game 7 that sent the Sharks onward to face the Dallas Stars in the second round.

“I think that has a lot to do with it - clean living and making sure that my body is fresh, that there’s no toxins in it,” said Roenick, who had two goals and two assists. “A healthy mind will create a healthy body, and the San Jose Sharks have allowed me to have a healthy mind. I haven’t felt this good in maybe 10 or 15 years, since I was a kid. I feel like I did when I played in Chicago, before Philly and Phoenix, way back when.”

On a similar topic, AskMen.com currently has a feature article on Chris Chelios online, looking at the customized workout routine that keeps him nearly “bulletproof” at the age of 45.

Evening Line

from the AP via Sports Illustrated,

“I’m biting my tongue here,’’ Keenan said after Game 2.

That didn’t sit well with Sharks coach Ron Wilson, who has long argued against a more relaxed standard of officiating in the postseason.

“The playoffs are an extension of the regular season, and we play by the same rules,’’ Wilson said Friday. “There’s not a red rulebook for the playoffs and a white one for the regular season.’‘

All in all, it’s been a virtuoso performance by two of the NHL’s top bench bosses and media agitators. Both are experts with pungent sound bites and jabbing comments to their players as well.

“They both have their thick books of things they say,’’ Roenick said. “At times, I’d like to put earplugs in my ears on the bench, but they both do it because they’re passionate about the game.’‘

Iron Mike Head Games

From Eric Francis at the Calgary Sun, Jeremy Roenick tells a story about Mike Keenan:

“In the 1992 Stanley Cup, I got slashed by Kevin Stevens, and Mike threw a cast on my hand and put me in front of the media to get a point across to the league and the officials that I was getting cheap-shotted,” chuckled Roenick during a conference call yesterday setting up his Sharks’ series with Keenan’s Calgary Flames.

“He made me a guinea pig—it was kind of embarrassing—but what Mike says, you do. Mike is a genius when it comes to head games and getting into the referees’ or players’ heads. He’s crazy—very slippery, very sly. He can manipulate a lot of people with what comes out of his mouth. That’s just a talent.”
