One More Goal For Jamie Benn, A Stanley Cup

from Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News,

"I think he's just hitting the window of his best years right now," Stars general manager Jim Nill said.

Nill knows a little something about windows of greatness. He spent 19 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings and watched 11 Hall of Famers -- Steve Yzerman, Nicklas Lidstrom, Sergei Fedorov, Dominik Hasek, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Chelios, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, Igor Larionov, Larry Murphy and Viacheslav Fetisov -- help bring Stanley Cups to the Motor City.

"I think there's still a little bit more out there for Jamie," Nill said. "When he's on his game, he's one of the best two-way players in the league and I think he can improve on that. I was fortunate to have worked in Detroit and remember Steve Yzerman. He became a better player when he was 29, 30, 31 and 32. It's experience and learning to play different ways. There's still more there for Jamie."

And Benn knows exactly what that "more" is.

"There's a lot more to give to get something even bigger," Benn said. "You grow up with big dreams and big goals. I've had some pretty good years but it's just the beginning. Team success is the next step -- winning a Stanley Cup."

Jamie Benn’s Top Priority Is The Dallas Stars

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Given the choice, Jamie Benn has decided to focus on silver and not gold right now.

The Stars captain has decided to the skip possibility of a gold medal at the prestigious World Cup of Hockey tournament in order to completely heal from summer surgery so that he can be 100 percent healthy for the start of the Stars season -- a campaign in which Benn and his teammates are fully focused on the shiny silver Stanley Cup.

"Giving everything I have to this organization is my main job, and I want to be ready to go when the season starts," Benn said. "I'm 100 percent committed to the Stars. That's why we made the decision."

An Eight-Year Extension For Jamie Benn Worth $76M

DALLAS, Texas - Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today at PM Standley Motorcars Party In The Park that the team has signed captain Jamie Benn to an eight-year, $76,000,000 contract extension (average annual value of $9,500,000), which will run through the 2024-25 season.

Benn, 26, finished the 2015-16 season ranked second in the NHL and first on the Stars with 89 points (41-48=89) in 82 regular-season games. He also shared second in the NHL in power play goals (17) and ranked third in goals (41), posting new career highs in each category. Benn appeared in all 82 games during the regular season, marking the second consecutive season and the third time in his career that he's appeared in all 82 contests. During the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Benn finished tied for 14th in the League and led the Stars with 15 points (5-10=15) in 13 postseason contests. He also finished tied for 11th in the NHL with 10 assists in the playoffs, while his six-game point streak was tied for the second-longest in the League during the postseason.

"The Stars are the only organization I know and Dallas is home to me," said Benn. "In working with the Gaglardi family and Jim Nill, they have made it clear that they are dedicated to winning, and winning the right way. I'm happy to commit to that process for eight more years. My teammates and I value the passion and dedication that we receive from Stars fans and we're looking forward to getting this season started."

Will Jamie Benn Take A Hometown Discount?

from the Dallas Morning News,

Mike Heika recently held a chat to talk all things Dallas Stars. Here are some highlights:

Question: Dirk has taken a lot of discounts here in Dallas. Do you think Jamie Benn would do the same to help bolster the roster?

Heika: This is going to be a very interesting negotiation, and Jim Nill will want to keep it all behind the scenes.

I think the Steven Stamkos signing in Tampa Bay opens the door for Jamie Benn to take a bit of a hometown discount. Stamkos probably could have commanded $11 million in free agency, but he took $8.5 million to stay in Tampa, citing no state tax and his desire to keep building a winning program. That set a precedent, and now it looks like everyone in Tampa is on board to take a little less.

Benn can do the same thing here. The cost of living is low, the value of the dollar is high, and he could take less in hopes of creating an environment where everyone is on a discount to make the team better. He's under no obligation to do so, but he can definitely help create a strong future in Dallas with this negotiation.

Jamie Benn Would Like To Stay In Dallas And A New Deal Would Be Nice Too

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Jamie Benn will be in the final year of his contract in 2016-17, and said he would like to get a new deal done in the summer.

"Going into the last year of your contract, you don't want it to be a distraction for your team," Benn said. "I'll let Jim (Nill) and my agent try to figure that out."

Benn, who is one of three finalists for the Hart Trophy as league MVP, is probably in the market for a deal similar to the eight years, $80 million that was recently signed by Anze Kopitar of the Kings. While Benn could become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2017, he said he doesn't want to leave the Stars.

"This is where I want to play, this is where I want to be," Benn said. "I don't think it's going to be a problem."

Afternoon Line- Jason Spezza On Jamie Benn

"You'll find that he's not as quiet and introverted as maybe he leads on. He's the leader in our room, he's one of the funniest guys in our room, he's involved in a lot of the stuff that goes on in our room...He's a big part of our room. He truly is a natural leader, the way he plays and the way he acts, we're lucky to have a guy like him, and you can see him grow into it even more. You go out and win the scoring title and then follow it up where he finished second this year. I think he has the inner belief that he is one of the best top five players in the game. Whether people talk about it or not, we know it and he knows it, and I think that confidence kind of rubs off on everybody."

-Jason Spezza of the Dallas Stars on Jamie Benn.  Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News has many quotes from the Dallas players before tonight's game agains the St. Louis Blues.

A Hockey Player

from Jamie Benn at The Players' Tribune,

My game day really starts when I get into my car and start my drive to the arena. I’ve got my suit on. I throw on my sunglasses. Then I crank techno music. Something about the bass filling the car gets my blood pumping. I know it’s business time once that music hits.

On the drive in, I’ve got to have the music on a little bit louder as I roll the windows down on the highway. The warm Texas air starts breezing through the car all while the Dallas skyline gets closer and closer. The adrenaline starts to pick up and the music gets turned up even louder.

When I get off the highway and closer to the arena, seeing all of our fans walking around in their Stars jerseys really puts me in the zone. Seeing all that Stars gear, that’s when the switch flips inside of me. When I pull down the parking ramp, I’m ready to go and all I can think about is walking through the tunnel into a sea of Victory Green.

When it comes time to hit that tunnel, that’s when I truly feel at home with our team and ready to give the fans a show.

It’s the best feeling. It’s the best time. It’s game time.

Jamie Benn, A True Power Forward

from Frank Seravalli of TSN,

Jamie Benn grew up watching and idolizing fellow British Columbia native Joe Sakic.

Recently, the Dallas Stars’ captain has looked a lot more like a reincarnation of Eric Lindros in his prime. Benn might not have Lindros’ pure speed, but he does have the same mix of skill, physicality and ability to bull-rush the net, a combination nearly unmatched in today’s NHL.

Just ask Canadiens’ defenceman Jeff Petry after Benn railroaded him with a clean hit on Saturday night. Benn’s thunderous hit forced a turnover, which resulted in an assist on Tyler Seguin’s goal by the time Petry could barely get to his feet again.

Benn, 26, leads the NHL with 22 goals in 33 games this season. Since returning with a gold medal from the Sochi Olympics with Team Canada in 2014, Benn has racked up 157 points in 132 games. No player other than teammate Seguin is within 19 points of him over the last two seasons.

All Jamie Benn

from Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News,

Jamie Benn is one of the top players in the NHL. The Dallas Stars left wing leads the league in goals with 19. Yet he's able to keep a low profile in a town where the Cowboys dominate the conversation and other big-name athletes like Dirk Nowitzki and Prince Fielder grab the spotlight.

Benn, with his understated personality, seems fine with that. He visited with The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday to discuss a variety of topics. But his comments about his ability to stay under the radar in North Texas were particularly interesting.

DMN: What's it like when you go out now? Are you recognized?

Benn: I think the people in Dallas are pretty easy-going. You get the odd fan that recognizes you. But we can pretty much go anywhere and we can have our space.

DMN: Is that pretty cool?

Benn: Yeah, it's definitely nice to have. There are a lot of other places you go that you pretty much can't go anywhere.

Jamie Benn For The Hart Trophy?

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

With an improved cast around him, Benn will nudge out every other elite forward to win the Hart Trophy. He is the preseason choice to be the League's most valuable player in the 2015-16 season.
"Jamie improves every game and every year," Stars center Tyler Seguin said. "I've only been with him for two years, but as a player and as a person it seems like every week he's getting stronger and better, and becoming a better leader and better captain. He wants the team to be so successful that he's making himself better as a player."

The Stars became a better team during the offseason, adding goalie Antti Niemi, forward Patrick Sharp and defenseman Johnny Oduya. All three have won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks. Sharp and Oduya did it last season.

Sharp is expected to start the season on a line with Benn and Seguin. It could become the best line in the NHL. Benn's numbers could go up. Would anybody be surprised if he scored 40 or more goals? He had 35 last season, 34 the season before.

A better, more experienced team around him should make Benn an even better player. That should put Benn in the national spotlight, which gives him a chance to impress more members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, who vote for the Hart Trophy.

NHL announces 1st and 2nd All-Star Teams

From the NHL:

NHL ANNOUNCES 2014-15 ALL-STAR TEAMS

LAS VEGAS (June 24, 2015) -- Left wing Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who earned his seventh career berth on the First All-Star Team, heads the list of players voted to the 2014-15 National Hockey League postseason All-Star Teams. Also a three-time honoree on the Second Team, Ovechkin’s 10 career postseason All-Star Team selections are the most among active players.

Six of Ovechkin’s seven career First Team berths have come at left wing (he was voted to the First Team at right wing in 2012-13). The only left wings in NHL history with more First Team selections are Bobby Hull (10) and Ted Lindsay (eight).

Joining Ovechkin on the First Team are three first-time selections: goaltender Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens, center John Tavares of the New York Islanders and right wing Jakub Voracek of the Philadelphia Flyers. The squad also features a pair of defensemen who have been selected to the First Team for the second time, Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators and P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens.

Among those named to the Second Team is Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, voted to his fifth career postseason All-Star berth (3 First Team, 2 Second Team). Defensemen Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings and Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators both have landed a spot on the Second Team for the second time, while Dallas Stars left wing Jamie Benn, Minnesota Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk and St. Louis Blues right wing Vladimir Tarasenko are making their first career appearance on the Second Team.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season.

A Look At Jamie Benn

from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe,

On my dream team, Jamie Benn, John Tavares, and Rick Nash are my first-line forwards. Good luck getting the puck off their sticks or denying them entry to the dangerous areas of the rink. They are monsters. In this league, it’s hard to beat size and skill.

Tavares and Nash were always considered NHL slam dunks. The Islanders drafted Tavares first overall in 2009. In 2002, Columbus made Nash the top pick. Tavares was granted exceptional status to play in the OHL as a 15-year-old. In 2000, the London Knights picked Nash fourth overall in the OHL draft.

Benn is the outlier compared with Tavares and Nash. In 2007, 128 players were drafted before Dallas picked Benn in the fifth round. Benn, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, was bypassed altogether when he became eligible for the Western Hockey League bantam draft.

In hindsight, neither is surprising.

Benn is a dominant NHL left wing. When paired with Tyler Seguin, the two are a lethal offensive combination. Seguin works magic with his speed, skill, and shot. Benn does the heavy lifting by protecting the puck, working the corners and the net-front real estate, and using his 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound frame to impose his will on opponents.

Jamie Benn Can No Longer Hide

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Jamie Benn’s soft tone and shy smile are perfect for his personal strategy of life.

“I like to fly under the radar,” the Stars captain repeated on several occasions Wednesday.

The problem is that Benn’s playing style keeps making that more and more difficult. As much as some call him the most underrated player in the league, Benn is the reigning best left wing in the NHL, as well as a gold medalist in the 2014 Olympics.

He’s getting to be kind of a big deal.

“He just does so many good things,” said linemate Tyler Seguin. “It’s something new every game.”

NHL Names post-season All-Star team

From the NHL:

NHL ANNOUNCES 2013-14 ALL-STAR TEAMS

LAS VEGAS (June 24, 2014) -- Center Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and defenseman Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins, who each earned his third career berth on the First All-Star Team, head the list of players voted to the 2013-14 National Hockey League postseason All-Star Teams. Crosby received First Team honors for the second consecutive season, while Chara earned a spot on the First Team for the first time since 2008-09.

Joining Crosby and Chara are two second-time selections to the First Team, right wing Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks and defenseman Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks. Dallas Stars make the playoffs for first time in six years, are ecstatic about it

The Dallas Stars made the playoffs for the first time since 2008 by defeating the St. Louis Blues 3-0, bumping the Phoenix Coyotes out of the playoff mix and setting the set of 16 teams that will battle for the Stanley Cup starting next Wednesday, and after the game, DallasStars.com's Mark Stepneski reports that the Stars were nothing less than ecstatic about their achievement:

“It means a lot,” said Stars captain Jamie Benn. “Every kid dreams of playing in the playoffs and trying to win a Stanley Cup. I believe we’ve got a great group in here that can do some damage. We earned it tonight.”

The trip to the postseason is the first for the Stars since 2008, when they made it to the Western Conference Finals.

“It’s a great feeling,” said defenseman Trevor Daley, the only player still around from that 2008 playoff team. “We’ve been battling hard. We’ve been battling hard for a long time. “

Stars coach Lindy Ruff may have been the most excited person in the Stars' locker room, too:

Matt Cooke on the receiving end of a dangerous elbow

While the Canucks and Flames were stealing the show, as it were, it turns out that one Matt Cooke received a possibly suspension-worthy elbow in the face from Jamie Benn, as noted by the QMI News Agency's Anthony Vasquez-Peddie:

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn could be looking forward to some quality time in the press box after this nasty check to Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cooke’s head Saturday.

Just seconds into overtime with the score tied 2-2, Benn carried the puck across centre ice and bowled over Cooke with his elbow extended.

It’s safe to say NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan will have a good look at this one. Benn would be considered a repeat offender after having been fined $10,000 for a cross-check on Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Jones last March.

As if the hit wasn’t mind-boggling enough, Benn was not penalized on the play.

Here's a clip of the hit, and Cooke is OK:

Simmons on the Stadium Series and Phaneuf

The Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons offers up his usual smorgasbord of Sunday observations, including an explanation as to what went wrong between himself and Brian Burke, but this paragraph's worth of thoughts stood out to me:

Question that wasn't asked after Carlyle admitted he was spotted in a Swiss Chalet in Parry Sound over the break: Did he order half-chicken or quarter-chicken? ... Not surprised that tickets for the outdoor game in Los Angeles between the Kings and Ducks aren't moving. Part of the charm of these over-hyped events is the back-to-roots element of the game. It's hardly back to roots when fans are wearing short-sleeved shirts at Dodger Stadium ... The Sunday assignment: Go through every NHL roster and make a list of defenceman you'd rather have than Phaneuf. It's not as easy you might think. I got to 15 and then started arguing with myself ... The new contract, when it's officially signed, will make Phaneuf the sixth-highest-paid defencemen in hockey, tied with Drew Doughty and Zdeno Chara. The top three paid defencemen in the NHL are Shea Weber, Ryan Suter and this year's Norris Trophy favourite, Duncan Keith ... Why Jamie Benn will be on Canada's Olympic team. His coach is Lindy Ruff. Ruff is one of Mike Babcock's assistants with Team Canada. All Ruff has to explain is what he sees every night with Benn

(Yes, Saturday's HBO's 24/7 episode basically revealed that Phaneuf and the Leafs have indeed agreed to a 7-year, $49 million contract extension)

You may most certainly read the rest; the Burke stuff really is fascinating.

Jamie Benn Announced As The New Captain Of The Dallas Stars

from the Dallas Stars,

Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill and Head Coach Lindy Ruff announced today that left wing Jamie Benn has been appointed to serve as team captain, becoming the sixth captain in Dallas Stars history.

Benn, 24, has spent all four seasons of his career with the Stars, leading the team with 33 points (12-21=33) in 41 games during the 2012-13 campaign. This past season, he led the team in shots (110) and was tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals.

"In a very short period of time, Jamie Benn has gone from being an exciting up-and-coming player in the NHL, to being a cornerstone of the franchise," stated Nill. "He has steadily grown as a player and as a person. He conducts himself each and every day in a professional way and continually leads by example. We fully believe that he will be a driving force in getting this team to the next level - and now he's our captain."

All Jamie Benn

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

How do you feel about the off-season changes that were made to the Stars?

Benn: It’s definitely exciting. Bringing in a talented, young superstar like (Tyler) Seguin is exciting for our hockey team and the city. We definitely brought in some other players that have some experience in (Shawn) Horcoff and (Sergei) Gonchar, so it’s going to be exciting and I think we are definitely looking forward to this year.

Does it feel different? The team has made coaching changes and player changes in the past, but this seems different for some reason.

Benn: It definitely feels different around here. There are maybe five or six guys left from my first year here. It’s good to have Lindy (Ruff) behind the bench, he has a lot of experience, and Jim Nill definitely knows what he’s doing. So, as a player, we are all excited and ready to go.

Any thoughts on the captaincy?

Benn: I’ve got nothing to say about that right now (smiles).

Benn Agrees To Contract With Dallas

Evans is the agent for Benn.

added 9:50pm,

FRISCO, Texas - Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has agreed to terms with center Jamie Benn to a five-year, $26.25 million contract ($5.25 million per year -- the first year of the deal is pro-rated).

Benn is entering his fourth NHL season, all as a member of the Stars. Last season, the 23-year-old had a career year, setting personal bests in goals (26), assists (37) and points (63). He led the club in game-winning goals (7), multi-goal games (5) and was second in shots (203). Benn was also selected to his first NHL All-Star Game, where he took home the accuracy shooting title during the Superskills Competition.

"Jamie Benn has proven in his short, but very productive NHL career, that he is not only this franchise's cornerstone player, but also an emerging superstar in the league," said General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk. "We believe that Jamie has the necessary tools to continue his growth and lead this team into the next great era of Dallas Stars hockey."

Why Jamie Benn Hasn’t Signed

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

While getting Kari Lehtonen signed was exciting news for Stars fans Friday, the real contract they have been waiting on is a new one for  Jamie Benn. After all, the 23-year-old forward, who played in the NHL All-Star Game last season, is expected to be the centerpiece of the team for years to come.

So why isn’t he signed yet?

Part of it is the uncertainty of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and part of it is defining a value for Benn. In the past, the Stars gave out “bridge” contracts for about two or three years and about $3 million. Loui Eriksson and James Neal took those deals. There is also a comparable in Claude Giroux of the Flyers, who is in the middle of a three-year deal for $3.75 million.

However, Benn seems to want more than that. With several young players signing deals of five or six years near $6 million a season, the market seems to be changing, and the Benn camps seems to want to take advantage of that. Because neither side is talking, the numbers are speculation, but there clearly are differences that the two sides have not been able to bridge.

How Much Money Does Jamie Benn Want?

from Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated,

The sense around Dallas was that the Stars were hoping to sign Benn to a "bridge" contract -- essentially, an intermediate deal between his bargain-basement entry-level deal and striking it rich. It's an approach that paid off in the past when they inked Loui Eriksson and James Neal to two-year pacts that gave the players sizable raises, but didn't break the team's limited budget, either.

But in the wake of more sizable contracts being given to Edmonton's Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, Benn and his agent Rich Evans have more ammunition to demand a deal with longer term and a higher average annual value -- perhaps greater than the six years at $6 million per given to Hall.

Here's the twist: now that it's known that the league wants a CBA that won't honor the full value of previously signed deals, there's no reason for Benn to sign any time soon unless he's given an even higher AAV to protect him when escrow claws back 15-20 percent of every deal. Or he could threaten to hold out when play resumes, knowing that a team struggling to regain its footing in the Dallas market can't afford the negative optics of starting a delayed season with its franchise player on the sidelines.

The Ongoing Contract Negotiations Of Jamie Benn

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

The Stars are laying low on the Jamie Benn talks. While there has been recent discussion between assistant GM Frank Provenzano and Rich Evans (the agent for Benn), GM Joe Nieuwendyk said there is nothing imminent, and both sides appear to be very patient.

In an e-mail with Evans, he said that Benn would like to keep negotiations out of the media “for the time-being.”

And that’s probably a good sign. Both sides seem to be treating this very professionally, and both sides seem to be very respectful of the other.

“Jamie Benn is going to be a Dallas Star, and this is just part of the process,” Nieuwendyk said. “He’s an important player to us, and it’s not like he’s going anywhere.”

The Stars have sent Benn a qualifying offer and he will clearly turn that down. As a fifth round draft pick on an entry level contract, he had a cap hit of $821,667 for the past three seasons, so it’s time for him to get a big raise. But the qualifying offer is part of the process. Because of it, the Stars retain Benn’s rights and can match any offer that another team might present to him.

There is a little caveat for fans, though. As long as Benn remains unsigned, he is open to an offer from another team _ and that could make for a little more tension over the summer.

Dallas Hurting

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

The Stars’ problem got a lot worse on Sunday.

Jamie Benn had an appendectomy and will probably be out 10 days to three weeks, GM Joe Nieuwendyk said. This comes on the heels of new that Mike Ribeiro’s MCL tear could keep him out until after the All-Star break.

That means the Stars could be without their top two centers for the next five games. And for a team that is struggling to score goals and struggling on the power play, that’s rough news.

Video- You Decide

Greg Wyshynski of PuckDaddy headlines his story with “goal of the year candidate”.

I say it’s probably the best video to describe the Columbus season so far.

Anyways, watch the goal by Jamie Benn yourself and then decide.
