Transcript of Q&A with Sidney Crosby in Montreal

Transcript courtesy of the NHL.

Q. Just, I guess, a comment from you on your decision to come here this weekend. There’s been some talk that perhaps if you didn’t come, you wouldn’t be eligible to play in the Penguins’ next game.

SIDNEY CROSBY: Yeah, my plan was to come here from the moment that I decided that I wasn’t going to be able to play due to injury. I’d had a talk with Gary Bettman as to the capacity of me being here, what it was going to be.

I obviously wanted to be here, but still want the focus to be on the guys that are here, too, and not the fact that I’m coming.

I’m happy to be a part of it. I’m probably not here playing like I would like to be, but it’s the second-best thing and I’m happy to be here anyway.

        Q. Pavel Datsyuk and Nick Lidstrom will be kept out of their next game on Tuesday evening. How do you feel about that? And did you and Gary discuss that if you didn’t come and take part in some of the events, that that would be the issue for you? And I think you play Wednesday next week.

Patrick Roy Conference Call Transcript

On Saturday night, prior to their game with the Boston Bruins, the Montreal Canadiens will honor Patrick Roy by retiring his No. 33 at the Bell Centre.  The following is the transcript from the Q&A session Roy had with the NHL media today.

Q&A

image

        Q. Can you just talk about what it means to you, and did you think this day would come given your departure from Montreal?

PATRICK ROY: Well, you have no control on if they will retire my jersey or not, but I surely hope that that would happen one day. I knew they had a lot of guys to do before me. You know, the Canadiens haven’t done that for a long time, and I felt that the Savards, the Robinsons, Gainey, Dryden, they’ve been a big part of the history of the Canadiens, and I think they deserve that.

Game Day with Mike Babcock

Q.  Can you just talk about the atmosphere of the skate this morning?  Did you think the guys looked pretty loose?

COACH MIKE BABCOCK:  Yeah, I mean, I thought they were fine.  But I haven’t rated that all year, the last three years or any of that, not a big believer that the pregame skate has a whole lot of impact in the outcome of the game.

Q.  It’s been clear throughout the year you guys remained level-headed, is that more than anything else the signature of this team, they just never let anything get to them really too much?

COACH MIKE BABCOCK:  Well, I wouldn’t say that at the start of the last game.  At the start of the last game we were nervous, no question about it.

Game Day with Michel Therrien

Q.      Coach, can you talk about how proud you are, as a head coach, of the effort that your guys showed in Game 5, you had guys with broken noses and injuries, and seeing them come back and Max making the goal, is that the most proud you’ve been of a team in your coaching career?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN: They showed a lot of character, there’s no doubt about that. And they see the prize. There’s a lot of sacrifice. It’s nice to get the reward, and they deserve it. It was a game that could go to both sides. We capitalized on the power play. And we get a high stick in the face.

But there’s no doubt, this is a team that faced adversity through the course of the season. And it was not any different last game.

Off-Day Quotes From Fleury and Sykora

Q. Marc-Andre, someone was telling me that you might have given Al the octopus guy a little squirt with water just as he was doing his twirling thing. If that’s the case, can you describe what the deal was with that?

MARC-ANDRE FLEURY: It was an accident. I just missed my mouth by a little bit. (Laughter) Yep. I don’t know, it was just at the game he does it to us. And after the first two games, I thought I’ll give him a little something back. And we won, so it’s good.

Tuesday with Pens Coach Therrien

Q.  Can you give us an update on Sergei Gonchar and where he’s at and what the expectation is for him for tomorrow night?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  We’re expecting that he’s going to be able to play tomorrow.  So that’s a good sign.

        Q.  Secondly, asking the guys what it’s like physically to come here after a game like that.  What’s it like for you?  You come down to the rink today and you reflect on last night, what goes through your mind?  What are you feeling today?

Tuesday Talk with Talbot and Crosby

Q.  Sidney, how is everyone feeling today with a little sleep, I guess, but probably a lot of adrenalin?

SIDNEY CROSBY:  Feel pretty good.  I mean, we’re happy to still be playing.  It was definitely a tough one last night.  But we’re just happy to really still be playing here.

        Q.  You said earlier in the season that Gonchar might be one of the least‑recognized stars in the League.  Can you just talk about, in your mind, what he brings to this team, not on the ice, but in the way he helps you guys in the room and with your maturity and the way you handle things?

Q.  How did you sleep last night given what’s at stake tonight?

COACH MIKE BABCOCK:  Outstanding.  Slept really good.

Post-Game #4 with Crosby, Hossa & Sydor

12:22am ET: Updated below with quotes from Marian Hossa and Darryl Sydor.

Q.  Sid, if you could just talk about that five‑on‑three and what you think went wrong on there?

SIDNEY CROSBY:  We missed the net a few times.  And there was a couple pucks laying on the crease we just didn’t put in.  I think if we went back, we’d try to hit the net and generate more from that.  But we got set up there for a while, and just couldn’t put it in.

Post-Game #4—Zetterberg, Lidstrom & Osgood

11:50pm ET: Updated below with some comments from Chris Osgood added.

Q.  Henrik, can you describe just in general your defense tonight and specifically your defense on the five‑on‑three?

HENRIK ZETTERBERG:  That was the one thing we wanted to do a little better today.  We want to have a little bit more poise in our own end.

We wanted to make some good decisions down there.  I think we did.  They got opportunity to tie up the game with the five‑on‑three in the end there.

We played good.  We tried to keep them outside and tried to be in the shooting lanes.  And when they got a puck through, Ozzie made a save.

Q.  Can you comment on the missed opportunities on the five‑on‑three, please?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  Tough to explain.  And there’s no doubt we needed to get that goal.  We didn’t execute well.

We got a good chance to tie up the game right there, and we didn’t do the job.

Post-Game 4 with Mike Babcock

Q.  You weren’t real happy with Zetterberg after 3.  Can you give us your thoughts on that one after 4?

COACH MIKE BABCOCK:  That’s not what I said.  After 3 what I said was that the coach didn’t do a very good job, and I had some people on the ice too long.  I thought those guys are fantastic players, obviously, and they drive the bus for us.

And but they’re like everyone else.  We all gotta be good.  When I don’t do a good enough job, you gotta ‑ you need to stand up.  When you don’t, you gotta be willing to call them out.  I thought Zetterberg was fantastic.  So was Datsyuk in that five‑on‑three, Kronwall and Lidstrom.

        Q.  Could we get an update on Tomas Holmstrom, we saw he skated a bit this morning and went off?

COACH MIKE BABCOCK:  He did just what everyone else did.  And basically what we’re going to do is he felt pretty good.  He’s going to come back for the game tonight, see how he feels.

Saturday with Sid

Q.  Game 4 is the swing game in any seven‑game series, and a lot of your guys admitted to being nervous before Game 1.  Do you think all those nerves are gone for tonight?

SIDNEY CROSBY:  Yeah, I think so.  We know what we have to do.  And this becomes the biggest game of the series.          So probably a lot of guys are going to have a similar mind‑set to Game 3.

        Q.  Kind of a lighter question for you here about Colby Armstrong, who is serving as a guest analyst for us.  And Colby actually predicted in Game 3 you’d have a big game and you guys would win 3‑2.  Do you think he makes a perfect analyst?

Game Day with Penguins Coach Therrien

Q.  Would you like to get the obstruction stuff out of the way first, before I ask my…

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN: (Laughter)  I said what I had to say yesterday, so let’s move on (Laughter.)

        Q.  You said the first couple of games nervousness could have been an issue with your team.  Do you sense going on in the series that’s less and less the case, and do you think that will be less the case tonight?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  Absolutely.  And it’s part of the process with a young team.  And the more the series goes on, the more we’re going to feel comfortable and we’re going to be better.

And we got better every game.  Our focus gets better every game.  And tonight I’m expecting we’re going to play ‑ we played a good game, Game 3, but tonight I’m expecting we’re going to be better as well.

Today with Michel Therrien

The media had some questions today for Penguins coach, Michel Therrien.  Transcript is below.

Q.  A couple of your players last night after the game said that they thought the style that you guys had used to great success to get to this point wasn’t working because of what Detroit was doing.  What can you do as a coach to switch up the strategy on this?  Does it need to be switched up?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  First of all, you’re not coming to the Stanley Cup Final and start to change all your system.  It takes years that players feel comfortable.  That’s not the way it works.

You have give credit to the Red Wings.  They played well.  They played well in their building.  This is a tough place to play.  Yesterday, I liked our work ethic.  I think our intensity was there.  We have all the reasons in the world to be optimistic as well for Game No. 3.  As good as the Red Wings is in their building, we are as good at home, too.

Monday Talk with Therrien

The transcript of Coach Michel Therrien’s remarks today.

Q.  What’s your power play need to do to change its luck tonight?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  You have to look at the big picture about our power play.  And I thought we got some quality shots last game.  We didn’t get the bounce we were looking for.  We got some traffic.

Our power play, we’re second in the playoffs.  The only teams that is ahead of us is Calgary.  They played one round.  So there is no sense to panic with our power play.  Special teams are crucial, we all know, and could make a big difference in games.

Ray Shero Answers Questions

Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero participated in a NHL teleconference today. Below is the transcript from the Q&A.

Q. Being swept up in the middle of this playoff run, have you had a chance to step back and appreciate what your team has done, the rebuilding process that has gone on in the last couple of years?

RAY SHERO: I think so. In between every round, there’s a different challenge, the first one being Ottawa, which was, honestly, a little nerve-racking. They were a team that beat us last year quite handily in five games. Trying to see how the team would react. Getting the early goal from Gary Roberts in Game 1, that was great.

But it’s been a great experience for our club here. Every round we’ve gone on, I think we’ve got more confidence. Hopefully we’re going to be ready for Saturday night.

        Q.  I was wondering if you could assess Evgeni Malkin’s play the last three games of this series?  What have you seen in him the last three games?

COACH THERRIEN:  Yeah, you know what, he hasn’t been productive like he was in the past.  But he’s going to have to find a win next game to make sure he’s going to be productive like he used to be as soon as the playoffs start.

Some questions for Philadelphia Flyers coach John Stevens today.

Q.  Can you talk about what Kimmo will mean not just on the ice, but off the ice in the room if he does come back and play on Sunday?

COACH STEVENS:  Well, he’s a huge part of our team.  I mean, through this year he’s progressed and in the playoffs he’s really taken his game to another level.  I think just his presence around our team all year, he’s got deep respect by all his teammates.  He just has composure all the time.  I think that’s infectious on our team.

Q. Could you talk a little bit about the chemistry between you and Datsyuk specifically, but also with Homer as well. Flashback with Ted Leonsis

From James Mirtle’s blog, an interview from April 2007 with Ted Leonsis,

And on this Saturday afternoon last April, they were awful.

I knew they were awful. Leonsis knew they were awful. And the fans in the building, at least those wearing Capitals colours, knew it, too.

It was with that uncomfortable knowledge that we all watched the third period together.

I’ve only met Leonsis the once, but there were two things I realized right away: (a) this is one competitive guy and (b) I’ve just met the biggest Capitals fan in the world.

Conference Call Transcript: Jacques Lemaire

Today, the Minnesota Wild’s head coach Jacques Lemaire was made available by way of a NHL teleconference. With 95 points the Wild sit in first place in the Northwest Division, two points ahead of Colorado and three ahead of the Calgary Flames, who they host tomorrow night.  A victory would guarantee a division championship and home ice in at least in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Here’s the transcript of Lemaire’s Q&A session.

Q. Jacques, one of the things I noticed about your team is how good your record is in special teams play and how important that’s been during the regular season. I’d like you to comment on the power play. You’re eighth best in the league, penalty killing second best in the league. How much has that influenced your success this season and how important will it be in the playoffs versus the regular season?

Here is the transcript from the Q&A.

Q.  Watching the game last night, you had Crosby with Dupuis and Hossa.  What was the thinking in combining Dupuis because a lot of people would have thought he would have been a third or fourth line guy, and next thing is Crosby, first game back, talk about his soreness level or how he came out of the game, Hossa missing the third period.

In some ways, his journey to the NHL will come full circle this Saturday when he will play his first professional game in his hometown of Buffalo, New York, when the Blackhawks visit the Sabres at the HSBC Arena.

Q.    Are you even a little surprised how well things have gone for you this year?

PATRICK KANE: You know, I think coming into the season, probably the biggest thing for me was to try to make the team. Once that kind of happened, things started coming in. I seemed to get a little more ice team here and there, some more opportunities to play with better players and I had a good start. Before you know it, we’re playing—myself and Jonathan, we’re playing against the top checking lines. I guess you don’t expect things to happen that quick.

The Hockey News: Speaking with Adam Proteau

imageAdam Proteau of The Hockey News has recently co-written a book with Ken Campbell, The Top 60 Since 1967: The Best Players of the Post-Expansion Era.

The Hockey News magazine has, for over sixty years, delivered the authoritative word on the premiere puckhandlers of our generation. In The Top 60 Since 1967, they’ve assembled a panel of experts to celebrate the top 60 players of the NHL in the modern era of hockey — the 40 years since NHL expansion. A detailed analysis accompanies each player, along with photos and statistical charts. Will Wayne Gretzky trump Bobby Orr for the number one position? How does Mario Lemieux stack up? And what about Patrick Roy, Phil Esposito, Sidney Crosby?

Today I talked with Adam about his book, future changes at The Hockey News, and things going on around the NHL—you can hear it on the player below. (*or download this mp3 audio file, if you prefer)

A Conversation with Keith Jones

Today I had a chance to chat with Keith Jones—“Jonesy”—about his 8 year NHL career with the Washington Capitals, the Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers.  Jonesy was good enough to share the story of his unusual journey to the NHL, as well as his media work these days with Versus.

Jonesy has a book out, co-authored with ESPN’s John Buccigross (whom Paul interviewed earlier), titled “Jonesy: Put Your Head Down and Skate: The Improbable Career of Keith Jones.”  The proceeds from this book go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a Philadelphia-area charity which helps the childhood victims of cancer.

The interview can be heard on the flash player below, (or you can download the mp3 audio file here).
