From the CP via TSN,
“I was cut before in my face and I didn’t even feel it. This time, it was kind of like a stab, I felt like somebody stabbed me,” he said. “After it wasn’t the pain, it was more what was going to happen.
“I kind of got a bit weaker when I got to the bench and then I don’t remember much but I remember I was talking to our trainer Zenobi and a doctor was putting so much pressure on my neck I couldn’t breathe. ..
“I was just wishing, `OK, let’s go to the surgery, give me some injections so I’m going to be sleeping and I can wake up after.’ It was painful just the pressure they were putting on my neck.”
His carotid artery on the right side of his throat was nearly completely severed. Surgery to reattach it at Buffalo General Hospital took an hour.

Kovalchuk Injured

From the AP via USAToday,
The Thrashers snapped a five-game losing streak, but Atlanta’s 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night might have been costly as leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk left the game with an apparent knee injury.
Kovalchuk scored his 38th goal, but was forced out of the game for good in the second period. He was injured in a knee-on-knee hit from Pittsburgh’s Jarkko Ruutu and made a brief return later in the frame for one shift, but didn’t return.
Kovalchuk was leveled by Ruutu 3:21 into the second period. The collision left Kovalchuk laying on the ice in obvious pain in front of Atlanta’s bench before he limped to the locker room.

The Kings New “Terminator”
by Alanah McGinley on 11/19/07 at 06:36 PM ET

From Lisa Dillman at the LA Times,
The left side of his face has been surgically reinforced and then some, with four plates, and that means Kings enforcer Raitis Ivanans might require a new nickname.
“Terminator,” he said.
But that doesn’t mean he’ll set off the machines going through security at airports, not that the Kings will be flying commercial any time soon.
“Everyone says that there would be beeping,” he said. “But it’s titanium.”
continued… (may require free registration)
*Ivanans is expected to return to the Kings lineup by Wednesday, and wearing a face shield for at least 4 weeks
