Versus Courting the Die-Hard Fan

From Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy,

Ask hardcore hockey fans if Versus is indeed a “hockey network,” and the majority would argue against the claim. Since purchasing the NHL’s cable rights in 2005, the Versus network hasn’t exactly endeared itself to die-hard hockey fans in the U.S. Between the silly mistakes and the self-inflicted wounds to its reputation, there isn’t a month that goes by without some impassioned rant about its failings as the NHL’s cable home or some fan-driven effort in support of the NHL reconciling with its abusive former spouse at ESPN.

To many fans, Versus is a punchline; a jigsaw puzzle of unrelated (and fringe) sports that viewers still can’t find in many hotels or sports bars around the U.S. Its hockey talent and coverage are much maligned, with even the most optimistic fans left frustrated by the approach to its most prized asset not named Lance Armstrong.

Not that any of this troubles the NHL’s cable host, which is available in 74 million homes nationwide.

Best of Hockey Blogs

USA Hockey Magazine recently came out on news stands with their August edition, which includes a feature on the hockey blogging world. The article should be available online soon.

Meanwhile, we were too excited to wait since they named Kuklas Korner.com to the top of the list—#1—for best hockey blog. (How cool is that?!)  Our sincere thanks to USA Hockey Magazine for such a flattering mention for us, plus an excellent list that includes other familiar hockey faces, both mainstream media as well as some independent fan bloggers. Represented are James Mirtle, Ted Leonsis, TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Tom Benjamin, A View From the Cheap Seats, and many others.

Thanks to our friend Patrick Hoffman at The Hockey News for sending us a scan so you can check out the complete list.

Update August 5th: Story now available online.

Blaming Hockey Bloggers

From Tom Benjamin at Canucks Corner:

Iain McIntyre tries to explain why so many stories printed in the run up to the draft turned out to be so much crap. Among other explanations - like the unsurprising revelation that general managers lie - we get this:

[T]he [Ryan Malone trade] story got ahead of the facts. That happens frequently in the Age of the Blogger, who has chewed down the standards of journalism the way the pine beetle has decimated B.C. forests.

I was one of only a few hockey bloggers when I first started with this hobby and I can say without any equivocation that the standards of hockey journalism had been decimated long before anybody considered us to be part of a new age. Bloggers haven’t really changed anything.

Gang of Wings

From Eric McErlain at AOL Fanhouse,

Can anything stop the Red Wings in their quest to win their fourth Stanley Cup in 12 years?

To get some answers, I thought it would be a good idea to check in with two of the leading lights among the Detroit hockey blogging community. Today I’ll be talking live to both Bill Houlihan of Abel to Yzerman from the Kukla Empire and George James Malik of Red Wings Snapshots at mlive.com. When it comes to Detroit hockey, both are hip deep in the middle of things, so I expect a lively and provocative hour.

We’ll be kicking off our discussion at 12:00 p.m. U.S. EDT, so come ready with your questions. And yes, if you must, bring along the snark.

Go here to join them at noon. (But seriously: you don’t need to bring the “snark”—with Bill in the room, I’m pretty sure the room will be thick enough with it…) smile

Some Call it Entertainment

From Josh Brewster at NHL Quick Shots,

It appears to me that Hockeybuzz likes the appearance of legitimacy that noting the writer’s newspaper affiliation lends, and that’s where Hockeybuzz is irresponsible. If it’s entertainment, don’t pass it off as something else (calls to Eklund for comment went unreturned).

Eklund should have some type of process for his blog site, but obviously doesn’t, which is why bloggers are looked at suspiciously by traditional journalists, and rightly so.  Much of what’s flying through the blogosphere is garbage.

Call Garner’s piece a “slob comedy,” Eklund. Put a picture of a cartoon character next to a piece like this if this is entertainment. Maybe throw a picture of John Belushi or Jim Carrey (maybe even a monkey?) on the page so that we know this is a goof, because it was presented by Hockeybuzz as something other than entertainment, for sure.

On the Bubble

From the New York Times, a few words from the representative bloggers of all the NHL teams still fighting for their playoff lives:

Included in the west is my own overly-optimistic blurb on the Canucks. But I think my favorite of the bunch would have to be from the Edmonton Oilers blogger… gotta love that hockey hate… smile

Thrashers Policy On Bloggers

from Craig Custance at Thrashers Blog,

If the Capitals, and their blogger-friendly credential policy are one end of the spectrum, the Thrashers are at the other end. To be fair, they are probably still in the majority with the rest of the league.

Their official stance comes from the PR department: “Our policy is only to allow bloggers from accredited news agencies.”...

We’ve heard a lot of the arguments back and forth, but ultimately it comes down to one thing: accountability. One Thrashers staffer explained it to me this way: “If we have a problem with you, we have someone we can go to.” Presumably my editor or somebody up the food chain at the AJC.

All About The Oilers Bloggers

from the Edmonton Journal,

The Oilogosphere—the numerous Edmonton Oilers sites, blogs and boards on the Internet—is the place where Oilers fans increasingly meet to discuss the merits of various players, not to mention delving into that most fundamental of all hockey questions: Who is hotter, Ethan (Chopper) Moreau or Craig (The Silver Fox) MacTavish?

Each day, thousands of fans get their news and make their opinions known on the Oilogosphere, just as surely as they go to the newspaper to read stories and phone in to talk radio shows.
