The Whale Sweater Makes It Debut In Carolina

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,

The most hated man in Connecticut, still, will be watching Sunday when the Carolina Hurricanes take a step back into their past and wear the green-and-white of the Hartford Whalers for the first time in more than 20 years. But Peter Karmanos, now merely a minority owner of the Hurricanes, isn’t sure how he’s going to feel about that.

“I’m going to watch the game with morbid curiosity,” Karmanos said. “I’ll let you know how I feel afterward.”

While a great number of people in the Nutmeg State have their Cooperalls in a bunch over what they see as the Hurricanes’ cultural appropriation of their beloved Whalers, their primary antagonist – the man they blame for the loss of the team, with all the bile that comes with that – isn’t quite as bothered. Having sold the team to Tom Dundon a little less than a year ago, he’s as operationally detached from the day-to-day operations as he is emotionally detached from everything that seemed so important two decades ago.

"Click here to secure your seats," the press release ended.

It was worse on Twitter.

"It's back," was the post, accompanied by jersey photos and a whale emoji ... and a link to a video that actually did pump the tunes of that beautiful song through our phones and computers.

Simmons talks advanced stats—positively—and offers Sunday observations

To his credit, the Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons' weekly notebook includes exactly one mention of the "advanced stats" community, and it's one that voices a thought many of us have considered since Extraskater.com went "offline"...

When the analytics website @extraskater disappeared on Friday, my assumption was that creater Darryl Metcalf had been hired by an NHL team

(or the NHL itself, given that its new "terms of service" all but ban the kind of activity Extra Skater and Behind the Net engage in)

And Simmons issues a pretty dang solid set of NHL-related tidbits and observations:

Vintage Time

First a Wayne Gretzky commercial, then a young Chris Pronger and a younger Bob McKenzie at the end of the video.
