The Todd Holt story, in many ways, is made for Hollywood.
A young hockey star ends up playing for a sexual predator. He drinks to the point of destruction. His life is spent numbing the pain in any way possible until, one day, he finally tells the world what happened, which leads to criminal charges against his tormentor.
In the Hollywood version, he lives happily ever.
But reality for survivors of sexual abuse often fails to follow such a romantic story arc. The collateral damage inflicted by the likes of Graham James spans generations, and the healing journey follows no set timetable.
But as Holt arrives in Swift Current, he’s more at peace than he has been in a long time.
“I used to look at Swift Current as a place with ghosts, a scary place,” he says. “But now it’s my second home. I gave 20 years of my life to the whole abuse situation. If I would have missed this opportunity, this experience, it would have been devastating all over again.”
By the time Holt arrived in Swift Current in 1989, Graham James had long since mastered the art of grooming victims for his abuse.
Tonight the CBC had a complete video report on the sentencing of Graham James.
from the CP at TSN,
Disgraced former junior hockey coach Graham James has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually abusing two of his players.
The sentence was handed down in a Winnipeg courtroom Tuesday by Judge Catherine Carlson.
The judge made James stand up in the prisoner’s box to hear his fate.
He showed no emotion.
“Mr. James’s victims are multiple,” Carlson said. “His behaviour was predatory and orchestrated to make victims dependent on him.”

A Canada-wide warrant for convicted sex offender Graham James will be issued Wednesday based on allegations from multiple accusers, The Canadian Press has learned.
Police in Winnipeg will lay new charges against the former junior hockey coach, who previously pleaded guilty to hundreds of incidents of sexual assault involving two teenaged hockey players under his influence.
Convicted sex offender Graham James, whose 2007 pardon caused outrage and pushed the Canadian government to propose changes to a federal law, is living and working in Mexico
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
It took a single member of the National Parole Board Ñ not a group decision, not a board debate — to pardon the disgraceful Graham James.
A single member named Pierre Dion.
A member who should explain to the Canadian public how it is he determined, under the Pardon and Clemency laws, that it was in the best interest of the public to pardon a sex-offending junior hockey coach.
A member who displayed a lack of regard for the Canadian public and for this country’s youth.
