Leafs In Need Of A Goalie Coach

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

The guru is gone.

Goaltending consultant Francois Allaire has decided not to return to the Toronto Maple Leafs, citing a conflict with the coaching staff.

“To be honest, I don’t think the Leafs need a goalie coach,” Allaire, whose contract expired at the end of the season, said in a phone interview on Monday. “I think they have enough of them. They have two or three guys who were making decisions with the goalies. In the NHL, that’s not the way it works.

“If that’s the way they want to operate, then I’m not there.”

The Leafs May Be Looking For A Goalie Coach

from Damien Cox of The Spin,

Don’t listen to the rumours that Brian Burke, subjected to an avalanche of public scorn in recent weeks, is planning to take a six-month leave to get his personal and professional house in order while leaving right hand man Dave Nonis in charge.

“I’ve never considered it and ownership has not asked me about it,” Burke said last week. “Quit is not in my vocabulary.”

But while those who would have Burke dismissed after his short tenure as Leaf president and GM won’t be satisfied, they may be able to take solace in the fact that the club’s controversial goaltending coach, Francois Allaire, may be looking to make an exit.

As reported first by Elliotte Friedman on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday night, there is strong speculation that a frustrated Allaire may soon resign his position with the Leafs and retire as an active NHL goalie coach. Allaire, the mentor behind Patrick Roy’s ascension to hockey imortality, has goaltending-related business interests outside of the NHL.

When contacted by The Star about the reports, Burke said he had not heard directly from Allaire that he was intending to step down. What appears to be the case is that friends and associates of Allaire are making his unhappiness known.

The Goaltender Teacher

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

The new goaltending consultant for the Toronto Maple Leafs says he was never a goaltender. Back when he played hockey, Francois Allaire says the position did not really exist.

Sure, there were players who wore pads strapped to their legs and wore a blocker in one hand and a catching glove on the other. Yes, their objective was to stop shots. But compared to the modern-day goaltender, Allaire and his brethren were as disadvantaged as a forward trying to score with one hand on his stick.

There was no instruction. There was no technique. And the only things that coaches seemed to care about was that the puck stayed out of the net and that the goaltender stayed off his butt.

Leafs Hire Ducks Goaltending Coach

from the Toronto Maple Leafs,

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that Francois Allaire has joined the team.  As Goaltending Consultant, Allaire will work extensively with the goaltenders at all levels of the Maple Leafs’ organization.

“We consider Francois to be one of the best in the world at his craft,” said Burke. “He brings a tremendous amount of experience and I know that he will make an immediate impact with our goalies. I would like to thank the Anaheim organization for making Francois available to us.”

Allaire, 53, spent the past 13 seasons as Anaheim’s Goaltending Consultant which included the 2007 Stanley Cup championship team
