A Second Look at Goalies
by Ian Gooding on 09/14/11 at 10:00 AM ET
Comments (2)
In my previous preview of the top goalies, I had mentioned Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo, Henrik Lundqvist, Pekka Rinne, and Ryan Miller as my top five options. Upon reflection and much debate, I discovered many other names that could be considered top 5 (or at least top 10). Many goalies are drafted in the early rounds of fantasy drafts, since top-notch starting goalies can be impossible to find on the waiver wire once the season starts. To help you find the right goalie(s), I have provided ten more goaltending options that could legitimately fall into the category of the NHL’s better starting goalies. And I promise that there will be no commercials while you read this.

If You Want to Win, Get the Geek

Do you play in a league that has different scoring settings from standard Yahoo (or ESPN or CBS) leagues? Many of us already do, so perhaps you know that you can’t completely rely on the default rankings.

Strong Up the Middle

In my last article on left wings, a few of you mentioned the positional dilemmas that we seem to face when drafting forwards. This is a great point, since not only do position eligibilities change from league to league (eg. Yahoo/ESPN/CBS), but also from year to year. As well, we also need to keep our eye on forwards with dual position eligibility.

Looking on the Left
by Ian Gooding on 09/04/11 at 01:00 PM ET

We continue our preview of the top players at each position with a look at the left wing. In my auction league with bidding that is taking place all month, I am currently looking for a low-cost left wing option, of which there are plenty. But here are the options that you can reasonably pay top dollar for or feel comfortable drafting with an early-round pick.

Too Many Top Defensemen
by Ian Gooding on 08/26/11 at 10:00 AM ET
Comments (5)
If you think that determining who the top goalie will be for fantasy teams this season is tough, wait until you attempt to sift through the number of defensemen who have been at or near the top of the scoring race the past couple seasons. I attempted to narrow down this list to five defensemen, but I had waaaay too difficult a time with that. Plus I’d be subjecting myself to far too much criticism from the masses! (By the way, I love the comments… keep ‘em coming.)

The Case for Number One in Goal
by Ian Gooding on 08/22/11 at 10:00 AM ET
Comments (2)
Determining a first overall pick in this year’s fantasy hockey drafts is anything but easy, but we probably know this much: the first overall pick won’t be a goalie. Yet a goalie is an important investment to fantasy hockey teams, since only two goalies can be responsible for four out of a team’s ten stat categories in many fantasy hockey leagues. The need for solid goaltending explains why many starting goalies can fly off the board early in fantasy hockey drafts.

Another Case For Number One

Is Sidney Crosby still the number one pick in fantasy leagues?
Mere hours after my posting suggesting that Crosby should be the first overall pick, Josh Rimer’s tweet about Crosby’s unlikeliness to be in the Penguins’ lineup to start the season was making the rounds.

Fantasy Hockey Mailbag
by Ian Gooding on 08/04/11 at 10:59 AM ET

How much does a player’s position factor into whether to retain him in a keeper league? Should a premium be placed on keeping a defenseman? How about goalies?
One reader is facing those very dilemmas as he prepares for his upcoming season.

In the latest episode of The Bolts Beat, JJ and co-host Mike Corcoran cover the Lightning’s recent preseason road trip, roster moves made thereafter, NHL discipline issues (including the recent Nick Boynton/Blair Jones incident), predictions for how Tampa Bay’s final roster may end up, fantasy hockey strategy and Jon (of course) continues his New York Jets elation, much to the dismay of Mike and fellow contributor, Tampa Bay Lightning.com’s Mark Pukalo.

Stanley Cup Hangover
by Alanah McGinley on 06/13/08 at 10:16 AM ET

From Rocky Bonanno at NHL.com
In a summer filled sure to be filled with partying and back-slapping, members of the Detroit Red Wings must be careful not to come down with a mythical illness known around hockey circles as “Stanley Cup Hangover.”
I’ve subscribed to this theory for quite some time, and keep it in mind whenever preparing for another fantasy draft. Quite simply, it is the belief that teams that advance to the Cup Final, whether win or lose, are more susceptible to disappointing performances the following season, and especially vulnerable are veterans on the wrong side of 30.

Gaborik Apologizes to Your Fantasy Hockey Team
by Alanah McGinley on 11/15/07 at 05:15 PM ET

From Sportsnet.ca,
In an unprecedented move, Minnesota Wild forward Marian Gaborik has apologized to fantasy hockey owners for playing in a defensive system.
“When developing this team it is obvious that management paid no attention to fantasy owners, but instead selfishly decided that winning games was more important,” Gaborik said in a “prepared statement.”
The Slovak scorer has 13 points in 12 games this season, including a game-winning goal against the Calgary Flames. For his efforts the Wild are off to a 9-6-2 start, but fantasy owners are frustrated that Gaborik is not a Top 5 in every offensive category.
“I will continue to help you out when I can,” Gaborik explained. “But I am afraid management is obsessed with giving Minnesota fans a Stanley Cup.”
continued… plus video. Fantastic.

Fantasy Advice
by Paul on 09/24/07 at 10:58 AM ET

from Scott Cullen at TSN,
When preparing for your fantasy hockey draft, it’s always beneficial to know the players that will provide better value than the round in which they are selected.
These players may provide better value for a number of reasons, be it good health, better linemates or just an increase in opportunities.
Tuomo Ruutu, LW, Chicago - Physical and talented player who has yet to reach his potential in the NHL, but Ruutu is likely to start the season with rookies Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane and the upgrade in skill for his linemates will help Ruutu start to realize his offensive upside.
