Eric Fehr Will Become A Free Agent On July 1st

from Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun,

The pending restricted free agent was told by the Jets they won’t be sending him a qualifying offer before Monday’s deadline.

“No, we did not,” Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said Saturday afternoon after the 2012 NHL Entry Draft came to a close.

The right-winger from Winkler was the first player Cheveldayoff traded for, coming over from the Washington Capitals last summer in a deal for an ECHL prospect and a 2012 fourth round draft pick.

What looked like a good opportunity for Fehr quickly became a nightmare as he missed all of training camp and the first 20 games of the season after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.

Once the rehab was complete, Fehr quickly found his way into head coach Claude Noel’s doghouse and struggled to find his offensive confidence.

Rather than the Top-6 forward minutes that were projected for him, Fehr spent much of his time on the fourth line and struggled to find his scoring touch, finishing with two goals and three points in 35 games last season.

Winnipeg Fall Fashion - Polar Night Blue?

image

Military personnel, multiple Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft in the background, security checkpoints out the wazoo and members of the federal government on hand in the crowd – it had all the makings of an election campaign appearance or an announcement of new fighter jets for the military.

Instead, we got our hockey team’s jerseys. From the back of that massive Hercules strolled Nik Antropov, Andrew Ladd, Mark Stuart and Eric Fehr, looking like an awkward boy band as they emerged through the smoke and blue light to some heavy guitar riffage.

Eric Fehr Shocked at Trade

From Dan Steinberg at DC Sports Blog:

“It was actually a shock to me,” he told Toronto’s 590 The Fan on Tuesday. “I didn’t really know I was really being shopped around or anything like that. I just got a call from the Caps GM George McPhee, one day, and he told me I had been dealt, and he told me I’d been dealt to Winnipeg.

“Obviously I was sad when I heard I was being traded — I have a lot of friends in Washington and I’ve been there a lot of years and I really enjoyed my time there. But when he said Winnipeg ,that made it feel better pretty quick. This was just something that I think they ran out of room under the salary cap in Washington, and then some players were gonna get squeezed out and I was one of them. It’s not like I was specifically saying I wanted to come to Winnipeg or whether I wanted to be moved at all. It was just something that they felt needed to be done, and it ended up working out for me.”

O’Reilly & Fehr Have Injuries

via Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Ryan O’Reilly does not have any head or neck injuries. That’s the extremely good news, after his frightening collision into the boards last night in Minnesota.

But there is an injury, possibly a season-ending one, to his left shoulder. Let me caution that no official prognosis has been made by the team, and likely won’t happen for the next day or two.

from Katie Carrera of Capitals Insider,

Eric Fehr suffered a right shoulder injury when he collided with David Steckel in the neutral zone during Washington’s 4-2 loss to Vancouver Friday night and Coach Bruce Boudreau said that the right wing will be out 3-4 weeks. Fehr had his right arm in a sling on Saturday at KCI.

Caps are Still the Caps, Which is Bad News for Everyone Else

Of all five Southeast Division clubs, the Washington Capitals of 2010-11 will look the most like themselves from a year ago, having added only a spattering of depth to the lineup that captured the President’s Trophy last season. Alas, as the reigning division champ and still the clear-cut class of the division, if it ain’t broke, well, you know… But a first-round playoff exit thanks to Jaroslav Halak and the Montreal Canadiens left an awful taste in the mouths of Bruce Boudreau’s squad, meaning improvements are in order this year for sure. (Or else?)

All Eric Fehr

from Jim Bender of the Winnipeg Sun,

SUN: You guys had such a great season, so do you still have a bitter taste in your mouth after losing to Montreal in the playoffs?

EF: Yeah, we weren’t happy with the way it ended. We didn’t play the way we wanted to and Montreal played well. But, at the same time, we didn’t play the way we needed to to win. We’ve got a really good team and we want to make the next round and make up for what we did last year … We haven’t gotten over it yet but once we start the season, we’ll turn the page and start fresh again.

SUN: Where do you need to improve?

EF: I just need to be more consistent and just play a full season. In the past, I’ve had a few injuries that have kept me out of the lineup. So, I’m just trying to stay healthy and contribute game in and game out.

Southeast Division Statistical Previews by Position: Forwards

As the new season approaches, I’ll be making an effort to preview the Southeast Division in a slow and steady, comprehensive manner. To kick things off, I thought I’d take a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. (In other words, for example, we’ll group Dustin Byfuglien’s 2009-10 statistics with Chicago alongside his new Atlanta Thrashers teammates and their performances from last year.)

In short, we’ll look at last year’s stats with this year’s rosters, both by division as a whole and by individual teams, broken down by position… Because a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come. (Often… Not always. See: Cheechoo, Jonathan.) And, besides, I don’t know that you’ll find a list like this in too many places (at least I hope you won’t… Cause that would mean I spent too much time on all of this!)

To get things started, we’ll start tonight with the forwards.

Couple Of Capitals Enjoy Their Golf

from PGATour.com,

Jeff Schultz and Eric Fehr, who play for the NHL’s Washington Capitals, left frigid D.C. during the All-Star Break to come to sunny Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and play THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

PGATOUR.COM: What did you think about the 17th hole? I hear you had a 10-foot birdie putt there.

SCHULTZ: It wasn’t as hard as I thought. But I guess if you’ve got a couple of stroke lead coming down the last day and everybody watching you, I can see why they call it one of the hardest holes in golf. It’s a tough green to read. I was able to par it. It was the highlight of my day.

PGATOUR.COM: What similarities do you see between golf and hockey?

FEHR: I think it’s kind of the swing—a slap shot and a golf shot. To me I putt like I’m playing hockey. I put my hand on the bottom of the putter.
