Gauthier Deserves A Suspension?

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Denis Gauthier has been suspended for two games, without pay, as a result of an incident during NHL Game #870, Feb. 19 against the San Jose Sharks, the National Hockey League announced.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Gauthier will forfeit $22,580.64. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Gauthier was assessed a minor for boarding after making contact with Sharks’ forward Patrick Marleau on an icing play at 10:14 of the third period. There was no injury as a result of the play.

note:  original post date was 8:07am today.

from Jamie Baker of the Broadcasters Blog at SanJoseSharks.com,

You have to love Todd McLellan’s response to other teams (Edmonton and LA) taking runs at some of the Sharks players. “”It’s hockey and it’s supposed to be rough. We can stand our ground and hold our own. We are a big team and we can stick up for ourselves.”

Denis Gauthier should get suspended for his intent to injure Patrick Marleau last night (Thursday). This will be interesting to see how the NHL determines disciplinary action when a player is not hurt, but it’s obvious the intent was there. Gauthier made no attempt to play the puck, which would have been an icing call. He kept two hands on his stick, his feet were wide and planted for a hit and his eyes never left Marleau. If that is not an attempt to injure I don’t know what is.

Kings GM On Gauthier Suspension

from Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,

Here’s general manager Dean Lombardi on the suspension:  “We didn’t believe he deserved a penalty, let alone a suspension. When you stop the tape, his elbow is clearly down and at the point of contact, his feet are on the ice. They both ended up halfway up the boards, so it’s not a charge….”

Gauthier Marooned

From Scott Cruickshank at the Calgary Herald,

“I still feel that I can play in the NHL, that I can help a team,” says Gauthier, a six-foot-three, 224-pounder. “This is not the end. I’ll be back. I just want to play in the NHL. It’s tough to be told that you’re an NHL defenceman, but you can’t play in the NHL.” Out of training camp, the Philadelphia Flyers, flush with high-priced personnel (including his Drummondville junior teammate Daniel Briere), needed cap relief. So they shoved Gauthier and his salary—$2.1 million US—across the parking lot, to the Spectrum, headquarters of the Philadelphia Phantoms.

Which marooned Gauthier in the minors for the first time in a decade.

Gauthier Could Be On The Flyers Bubble

from the Courier-Post,

When the Flyers fortified their porous defense in the offseason by acquiring Kimmo Timonen from the Nashville Predators and Jason Smith from the Edmonton Oilers, Flyers’ defenseman Denis Gauthier wondered whether he’d be starting training camp wearing a different uniform.

“Yeah, I was concerned,” Gauthier said Tuesday after a scrimmage with several other Flyers’ veterans. “I wanted to be back. When I signed that two-year (contract) extension I planned on being here the whole two years. I feel like I was a part of getting (junior teammate) Danny Briere to come here. That would have really (ticked) me off, giving up on me after one year.”

That two-year extension, valued at $2.1 million in each of the next two seasons, could end up being an albatross for Gauthier, especially if Mike Rathje is successful in his attempted comeback.
