ESPN’s Interview with Mike Danton Tonight

A reminder of this broadcast, which we posted about several days ago (*link includes a short video clip).

On Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. ET, ESPN’s award-winning primetime news magazine will retell the Mike Danton odyssey, including the first interview with Danton’s mentor and agent David Frost (aka. Jim McCauley).

Mike Danton’s dreams seemed realized – a promising NHL career, wealth, a nice home – until a failed murder-for-hire plot landed him in jail for almost five years. Danton claimed the intended target was his father, Steve Jefferson, whom he says abused him when he was a child. The FBI believes the target was Danton’s youth coach, agent and surrogate father, David Frost.  The two men Danton approached at different times to carry out the murder, St. Louis strip club bouncer Ron Jones and Justin Levi Jones, a police dispatcher who tipped off the FBI, point to Frost as the target.

The episode prompts Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, to ask on Twitter:

“Wonder what will get bigger TV numbers in the US tonight? Playoff hockey or Mike Danton lying to ESPN.”

Mike Danton’s Story: Stranger Than Fiction

from an ESPN release,

On Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. ET, ESPN’s award-winning primetime news magazine will retell the Mike Danton odyssey, including the first interview with Danton’s mentor and agent David Frost (aka. Jim McCauley).

Mike Danton’s dreams seemed realized – a promising NHL career, wealth, a nice home – until a failed murder-for-hire plot landed him in jail for almost five years. Danton claimed the intended target was his father, Steve Jefferson, whom he says abused him when he was a child. Now out of prison, Danton has turned his life around. E:60’s Jeremy Schaap reports on Danton’s attempts to move forward and rebuild his life while exorcising the demons of his past.  But the convoluted details of the murder plot, his murky relationship with Frost and the contentious connection with his family still linger.

The #1 Bad Boy Of Canadian Hockey

from Gary Dimmock of the Ottawa Citizen,

Although Ottawa Citizen investigative reports sparked an Ontario Provincial Police investigation into the sex exploitation allegations, Frost, who said nothing to the media as he walked out of a Napanee, Ont., courtroom Friday, spoke exclusively with the newspaper on Saturday.

“They (the authorities) played me up to be the bad boy of hockey; well, now I’ll show them how much of a bad boy I can be,” Frost said.

On his website, http://www.hockeygodonline.com he bi,lls himself as the No. 1 bad boy of Canadian hockey.

It includes “Frosty’s favourites” — his take on top players — hockey pool information, premium details for aspiring players, and a “Hockey Hottie” of the month, a feature that has a place for pictures of female hockey fans wearing nothing but a jersey with the chance of winning prizes.

David Frost Verdict Delivered Today

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

In what may have been the most poignant and dramatic moment in the sexual exploitation trial of David Frost, defence attorney Marie Henein aggressively and sarcastically attacked the credibility of key witness Kristy Boyer.

“We know there were threesomes with Mr. Frost in Deseronto,” Henein questioned in cross examination, “Because you say so?”

But a shaking and clearly upset Boyer maintained her composure, stared at Henein and whispered cryptically: “Because I know so.”

When everything else is stripped away, this is the essence of the case against Frost, the former hockey coach, who faces four charges of sexual exploitation involving teenaged hockey players.

The verdict in this case will be delivered today by Justice Geoffrey Griffin in a Napanee courtroom.

It Needs To Change

from Patrick White of the Globe and Mail,

Gilles Lupien, a prominent National Hockey League player agent, has never gone public about the disturbing phone calls he received from a young junior hockey player 20 years ago.

But with many in the hockey world treating the lurid allegations coming out of former junior hockey coach David Frost’s sexual exploitation trial as an aberration, the memory has been weighing heavily on his mind.

“The culture of junior hockey has to change,” said the former Montreal Canadiens defenceman, who now represents Vancouver Canucks’ goalie Roberto Luongo, Boston Bruins goalie Manny Fernandez and 13 other NHL players.

David Frost Set to Stand Trial

From CBC,

A judge in Napanee, Ont., on Monday dismissed a bid by former hockey coach and player agent David Frost to have sex-related charges against him dropped.

Frost faces six charges of sexual exploitation involving four teenagers dating from his days as a hockey coach in neighbouring Deseronto, in the early 1990s.

Frost, 40, will next appear in court on Aug. 25, and his trial is scheduled to begin in Napanee on Oct. 14. He is also facing trial next April on fraud charges over the alleged illegal use of a credit card belonging to jailed St. Louis player Mike Danton.

Danton, a Brampton, Ont., native and former St. Louis Blues forward, was sentenced to seven and a half years in a U.S. federal prison in November 2004 for plotting to have Frost killed.

Frost Takes The Victim Route

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

An emotional, defiant, and argumentative David Frost took the witness stand yesterday in Ontario Provincial Court, claiming that the battery of sexual exploitation charges against him have made it impossible for him to make a living from hockey.

Making it sound as though he was once a National Hockey League player agent of significance, Frost almost broke down in describing the “financial hardship” his family has faced since he was charged with a multitude of sexual offences in August 2006.
