David Booth Feels Playing In The East Will Help His Game

from Mike Johnston of Sportsnet,

It’s no secret David Booth struggled during his time with the Vancouver Canucks.

Much of that can be attributed to various injuries—Booth missed a total of 68 regular-season games in less than three seasons with the Canucks after being acquired from the Florida Panthers in 2011—but being on a Western Conference schedule also had its drawbacks.

The Detroit native thinks playing in the Eastern Conference again will benefit his game.

“It really is tough [playing in the West], and for me personally the amount of rest I get is the most important thing for the way I feel, the amount of energy I have,” Booth told The Jeff Blair Show on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Thursday. “Travel kind of wears you out. Those are things every team has to deal with. I just think some guys adjust to it differently, and I think that’s one of the reasons I’m excited to be in Toronto and to be in the East. Hopefully [travel fatigue] doesn’t play such a big role as it did in Vancouver.”

David Booth Now A Member Of The Toronto Maple Leafs

via the Toronto Maple Leafs,

David Nonis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday the hockey club has signed forward David Booth to a one-year contract.

Booth, 29, played 66 games for the Vancouver Canucks in 2013-14, collecting nine goals, 10 assists, 19 points and 18 penalty minutes. The 6-0, 212-pound winger has registered 218 career NHL points (113 goals, 105 assists) and 181 penalty minutes in 443 games with the Canucks and Florida Panthers. In 2008-09 with the Panthers, Booth set career highs in goals (31), assists (29) and points (60) in 72 games.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Booth was selected by Florida in the second round, 53rd overall, in the 2004 Entry Draft.

‘The best of what’s left’

Sportsnet's Luke Fox has been monitoring the fates of the "NHL's Top 10 Unrestricted Free Agents"--with an emphasis on those who remain on the marketplace--The Score's Thomas Drance has penned a list of 3 categories of "cheap free agent gambles that pay off year after year," and while general managers are most likely "at the lake" or golf course right now (World Junior Selection camps begin in August and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic kicks off the 2014-2015 scouting season), both Fox, Drance and ESPN's Craig Custance duly note that there are some bargains out there.

Said players tend to have to reduce their asking prices and may end up waiting until training camps begin to find their NHL homes, but the Devin Setoguchis, Tomas Vokouns, Dustin Penners, Daniel Winniks, etc. do tend to make significant impacts eventually...

And Custance's Insider-only entry leads off with a player who may or may not fit into the "best player who played outside of the NHL last season" category:

Simmons talks free agent untouchables and a tender tribute to an hockey lifer

The Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons can be equally acerbic and surprisingly sincere, so let's cover both areas of his writing in a short survey of his Sunday column.

Regarding the acerbic part, I hate to say it, but I most certainly agree with him here....

Free agents I wouldn’t touch: Vanek, Ales Hemsky, Dustin Penner, Brad Richards, Mike Ribeiro, Derek Roy, Lee Stempniak, David Booth ... So we’re wondering: Does Tim Thomas get a job this summer?

(Did Tim Thomas hear David Poile explain that Nashville has no state taxes on income? Red State Tour, woo!)

And here...

I understand why Jason Spezza turned down a deal to Nashville. Would hate to be a lone wolf in the Western Conference at centre and be overmanned nightly against the Kings, Ducks, Blackhawks, Sharks and Avalanche.

But I will be a little acerbic in suggesting that the damn 2nd-through-7th round NHL Draft on the NHL Network involves far too much talking over everything, and in the talking heads blathering on, they missed what was an absolutely wonderfully touching moment:

Power-Skating Sessions Have Helped David Booth

from Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province,

Booth’s commitment to regain his powerful stride and balance after knee, ankle and groin injuries the last two years wasn’t just talk.

Before the Canucks departed on their last road trip on what was a travel day, Booth and Aidelbaum had a 7 a.m. skating session at Rogers Arena. During the four-game trip, teacher and pupil exchanged technical analysis, and when the club returned Wednesday, Booth and Aidelbaum had another session.

The results have been quick and quite remarkable.

Booth scored in successive games on the trip, but his bold move out of the corner and powerful cut to the net to bury a backhander on Nov. 30 at Madison Square Garden was an eye-opener. He looked more like that 30-goal scorer with the Florida Panthers in 2008-09 than someone who has struggled to score three times in 18 games this season and has been in the Tortorella doghouse.

That goal against the New York Rangers was beyond encouraging. It was an epiphany.

“That was technical,” Aidelbaum said Wednesday. “With the skills comes comfort, and with comfort comes confidence, and it works directly in that order. If the skating is sharp, the mind is sharp and they feel they can conquer the world.

Vancouver Will Give Booth A Chance To Find His Scoring Touch

from Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province,

David Booth reportedly broke down in tears when told of the trade.

However, once the left winger stomachs the seven stages of grieving and reaches the acceptance and hope phase, they should turn to tears of joy to jump-start an NHL career that has teased of star potential and disappointed with stretches of inconsistency and two serious concussions. If this is truly a case of a great performer not having the right supporting cast with the Florida Panthers — as opposed to a player fading from a career-high 31 goals in 2008-09 and being a salary dump — then Booth should be salivating at a chance to play with Ryan Kesler and Chris Higgins on Tuesday in Edmonton on the All-American Line…

Booth has three more seasons at $4.25 million US annually — Florida general manager Dale Tallon was trying to rationalize it as a performance-based issue with the club’s second-round pick of 2004.

“Nothing to do with contract — nothing at all,” he told the Miami Herald. “We’re taking more money in this deal [$2.5m in Samuelsson, $2.2m in Sturm] and it gives our young guys an opportunity. I wasn’t going to sit here and let this fester and I want to send a message and I want to make changes and get better….

Past the Quarter Poll: Southeast Division Team Ratings from JJ

We’re past the quarter pole, so maybe this is a bit late but it still seems like a good time to me to hand out some assessments to all five Southeast Division clubs. Besides, what’s this quarter pole anyway? Divide the NHL season in equal fours and the resting #StamkosMath calculator tells me that we’d have to stop things at the ten-minute mark of each team’s 21st game of the year to truly be one quarter of the way through. And that just seems troubling.

We’ll go with JJ Ratings rather than the standard report cards because one, everyone else seems to do the report card thing and two, handing out school-type grades gives me terrible nightmares. (Trust me.) Instead, each club’s JJ Rating will reflect their performance on a scale of one to ten (and, since I’ve become a big fan of complicating things, we’ll allow for partial points as well).

Here we are, anywhere from 26-29 games into the 2010-11 slate for the Southeast squads – as good a time as any (maybe just because I say so) to see where we are versus where we thought we’d be, as well as where we might be headed.

We’ll tackle this alphabetically (Ooh… Suspense!)

14 Shots On Goal By Booth, No Goals

from Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel,

After one of David Booth’s career-high 14 shots on goal knocked off the mask of Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask, the backup netminder flashed a grin as if to say, “Not tonight.”

It wasn’t Booth’s night or the Panthers’ in Thursday’s 4-0 loss to the Bruins at TD Garden, where the final score belied a taut struggle between two teams coming off road wins the night before.

Former Panther Nathan Horton assisted on all three of linemate Milan Lucic’s goals as Florida (8-9) failed in its bid to go over .500 for the first time this season.

“[Horton’s] line was the difference in the game,’’ said Booth, who had hit his previous high of nine shots twice this season. “It was really a 1-0 game all the way through. I think we outshot them [41-40]. I was going to keep shooting. It’ll go in eventually.’‘

Around the Southeast this Weekend

A quick look at what’s happening (and what’s happened) with all five Southeast Division clubs as we head into the weekend:

We’ll go top to bottom:

Tampa Bay
1st place, 6-2-1 (13 points)
By and large, folks have been impressed with the Bolts thus far. As I wrote on Wednesday night, all six of their wins have differed significantly from one another and, though it is extremely early, that is a distinctive mark of a good team.

Get Headhunting Out Of The Game

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

In talking to (David) Booth, it becomes clear he is a reasonable voice in what is surely going to continue as a heated debate, if all the concussions in the early going this season are any indication.

The NHL has had a bizarre run of them already. Since no two concussions are alike, it’s difficult to define the cause and introduce a one-size-fits-all rule to limit them. For example, Raitis Ivanans of the Calgary Flames took a punch in the chops from Edmonton Oilers winger Steve MacIntyre. Does the league ban fighting? It wouldn’t hurt.

Cam Janssen of the St. Louis Blues was run over by his own player, Brad Winchester. Hard to throw the book at Winchester, but maybe recklessness should be punished even under those circumstances. Atlanta Thrashers goaltender Ondrej Pavelec fainted and was concussed when his head hit the ice, a freakish event that probably isn’t going to happen again any time soon.

Booth, who has resumed playing this season, acknowledged the range of causes in an interview prior to the Panthers’ date Thursday with the Flames: No matter how stringently you may police the sport, some head injuries will inevitably occur. His concern is to get the headhunting out of the game, something he believes is easier said than done.

Facing a Decade Without the Playoffs, Florida’s Rebuild Goes On and On

Futility in Sunrise has persisted for far too long, with the Florida Panthers on the brink of a dubious record after nine consecutive non-playoff seasons. Incoming general manager Dale Tallon has moved quickly in putting his stamp on the team with several transactions since taking over, but nothing to this point appears bold enough to turn his club from last season’s Southeast Division cellar dwellers into a postseason participant.

Sadly, more patience may be in order for long-suffering Panthers fans.

Even so, all is not lost for the NHL’s southernmost franchise, with several key pieces already in place for the future (and others right around the corner) and it isn’t as though the current roster is without talent as is. Still, a couple of major stumbling points remain for the Panthers. The 24 games they will play versus fellow Southeast clubs, three of whom look to be vastly improved and the fourth being the stalwart Washington Capitals, certainly won’t help and the expiring contracts for defenseman Bryan McCabe and goaltender Tomas Vokoun will have to be dealt with (and quite possibly dealt altogether), without either situation becoming a distraction.

Training Camp Just Around The Corner

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Training camps open around the NHL later this week and some burning questions come to mind.

Among them has to be David Booth, the Florida Panthers star winger who was limited to 28 games last season after suffering a pair of concussions. How is he faring now?

“He’s healthy as a horse,” Panthers GM Dale Tallon told ESPN.com on Monday morning. “We’ll keep our fingers crossed. We need him to be healthy. It’s exciting, tough. He’s good to go.”

Southeast Division Statistical Previews by Position: Forwards

As the new season approaches, I’ll be making an effort to preview the Southeast Division in a slow and steady, comprehensive manner. To kick things off, I thought I’d take a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. (In other words, for example, we’ll group Dustin Byfuglien’s 2009-10 statistics with Chicago alongside his new Atlanta Thrashers teammates and their performances from last year.)

In short, we’ll look at last year’s stats with this year’s rosters, both by division as a whole and by individual teams, broken down by position… Because a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come. (Often… Not always. See: Cheechoo, Jonathan.) And, besides, I don’t know that you’ll find a list like this in too many places (at least I hope you won’t… Cause that would mean I spent too much time on all of this!)

To get things started, we’ll start tonight with the forwards.

Booth Confident He Will Recover From Second Concussion

from Steve Gorten of the Sun Sentinel,

Winger David Booth spoke publicly this morning for the first time since suffering his second concussion on March 25 and was in good spirits. Booth said he’s probably going to take a month off — “that’s what I did last time and I really felt good” — and then slowly start exercising before “cranking it up” in July or August.

“There’s enough time over the summer to really recover and get my head where it needs to be,” Booth said.

Not just physically, but emotionally.

Booth Battles Richards

from Steve Gorten of the Sun Sentinel,

Here’s what Booth said after the game about what went down with Richards 2:45 into the first period:

“That was kind of expected. I don’t really know what I’m doing when I fight,” Booth said. “But it was just a lot of…I don’t know what’s built up, but what could have been this year if you were playing, you think about that. But that’s behind me now. I don’t have to worry about that. I can just go out there and play and be free of this. I’m back to 100 percent.”

Booth added: “I just wanted to get it off my chest. It wasn’t cheap or anything. I just asked him if he wanted to and he was good enough to give me my shot.”

Booth Close To Returning

from Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel,

DeBoer and Booth talked for a while near the bench today and then Booth chatted with Dave Zenobi. DeBoer said it was nothing more than just another daily conversation on Booth’s progress.

I spoke with Booth this afternoon. I got the feeling he’s going to be back one of the next three games after tonight—either Sunday against the Islanders, Monday against the Ducks or next Friday against the Flames. All three are home games. My guess would be Friday.

I asked Booth if he was ready to play. He said he’s getting closer, but isn’t quite there yet.

“If I felt ready to play in a game right now I’d be playing tonight,” Booth said. “I don’t know when that date is going to be. I just don’t want to put my team in jepoardy of anything where I’m not ready. Every shift now counts. If you make a mistake and the other team capitalizes, it’s tough to live as a player.”

David Booth’s Return Is Uncertain

from George Richards of the Miami Herald,

The Panthers have been saying that injured winger David Booth is expected to return to the lineup sometime this month.

Coach Pete DeBoer on Saturday added some doubt to that timeline, saying that it’s possible Booth could be done for the season.

Booth, who led the team in goals last season, was knocked unconscious by Philadelphia captain Mike Richards in a brutal open-ice hit on Oct. 24. Booth sustained a major concussion and has resumed skating and working out. But DeBoer said Booth’s return is an uncertainty.

Panthers Still Angry About Ricards Hit

from Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel,

How does David Booth feel toward Flyers center Mike Richards, who dealt him the concussion that’s caused him to sit out two months and at least three more weeks?

“Uh…yeah, I mean, that’s…you know…uh…there’s…uh…I don’t know. I can’t say anything,” Booth said, unable to muster more in a span of 15 seconds.

Is Booth angry?

“Yeah I’m angry. How could you not be angry? Everyone would be angry.”

The Florida Panthers will play the Flyers on Monday night for the first time since Richards drove his left shoulder into Booth’s head at full speed on Oct. 24, a hit that dropped Booth flat on his face on the Wachovia Center ice and sent him to the hospital.

Evening Line

Booth has struggled this season, but watching the camp and also watching David Booth I could argue that he is the best pure “sniper” the Americans have and his slow start is a testament to this. Snipers are by their nature streaky players. Right now he is ice cold, but if Booth gets hot at the right time you would probably want him on your top unit. Booth is the Joey Mullen of this group.

-Dwayne (Eklund) in his Team USA outlook today.  Dwayne has David Booth on the taxi-squad (there isn’t one) and by his remarks, is oblivious to the fact that Booth has been out with a concussion since October 28th.

Not the first time Dwayne has showed his lack of hockey knowledge and won’t be the last.

Booth Stops All Workouts

from Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel,

Panthers coach Pete DeBoer said it was a “mutual decision” between him and injured winger David Booth (concussion) not to have Booth travel on this three-game trip, which includes a stop in his hometown for Friday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.

DeBoer said it was made because Booth has suffered a setback in his rehab after increasing the intensity of his exercise last week. For now, he has stopped exercising.

“We’ve kind of taken our foot off the gas and given him a few days off before we look to go back at it again,” DeBoer said. “But that’s anticipated. We knew going through this process there was going to be good days and bad. You just have to take them in stride.”

Booth Not Close To Playing

from Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel,

The only news out of practice this morning: Coach Pete DeBoer said winger David Booth (concussion) is “weeks away from playing.”

The Panthers have taken great caution to bring Booth along slowly since he suffered his first-ever concussion Oct. 24 in Philadelphia. He has started exercising lightly, but has yet to start skating.

I feel bad for Booth because the Panthers will play the Red Wings on Friday in his hometown of Detroit and once again Booth won’t be able to play because of injury. He missed the teams’ matchup in Motor City two years ago because he was hurt, though he did make the trip so he could at least be there.

DeBoer said there’s a chance he’ll go along with the Panthers this time, too. Personally, I think it’ll happen. Plus, it’d be good for his morale to be around his teammates a bit.

Reactions To Richards Hit On Booth

from Chuck Gormley of Flyer Files,

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren defended Richards and called out Sexton, saying, “Randy should watch more hockey games.”

“It was a good hit,” Holmgren said. “I don’t see how they can (suspend him). Mike was doing his job. He was back tracking, he caught up to the play. His feet never left the ice. David Booth turned his head or it would have been a shoulder on shoulder hit. It’s a physical game and sometimes these things happen.

“Everybody in the league knows Mike isn’t a dirty player. He’s a player every team in the league covets.”...

Several Panthers were angered by the hit and said they thought Richards should be suspended.

“This is the same stuff we’re trying to put an end to,” Panthers defenseman Keith Ballard said. “He tried to hurt him. I understand it’s a split-second decision, but you’d think he’d have more respect than that. … He’s a good player and he plays hard and we respect that, but he did the exact same thing to (Thrashers forward) Colby Armstrong a few years ago.

Mike Richards is a good honest player, except when he does (stuff) like that and he’s done it before.

Update On David Booth

from George Richards of On Frozen Pond,

Florida Panthers winger David Booth is alert and moving after being taken off the ice on a stretcher after a hard hit to the head from Philadelphia Flyers captain Mike Richards on Saturday night.

Booth, 25, remained motionless on the ice after the dangerous hit administered by the Flyers star. Booth was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital in south Philadelphia where he was expected to remain at least until Sunday.

Team athletic trainer Steve Dischiavi rode to the hospital with Booth and will remain with him until he can return to South Florida. The Panthers boarded a jet soon after Saturday’s game.

‘‘They are doing a whole host of tests just to make sure everything is OK,’’ said general manager Randy Sexton. ‘‘I don’t know [if Booth had a concussion]. It’s too early to tell. The injury just happened. We’ll have a much clearer picture in the morning. He was moving his extremities and was awake when he left the ice.’‘

David Booth Update

From George Richards at On Frozen Pond,

Word out of One Panther Parkway is that all is well with the young Mr. Booth, and his scheduled MRI is now not needed.

According to spokesman Justin Copertino, Booth flew home with the team last night and met with team trainer Curtis Bell today. All seems fine. David is hurting a bit, understandable, and is wearing a precautionary neck brace.

Booth will not practice Monday at the Ice (10:30 a.m., open to public) and isn’t expected back until later in the week. So it’s good news: no permanent damage, just some soreness. “Kind of like he was in a car wreck,’’ Copertino said. Yep, that’s about what it looked like last night.

Florida Panthers left wing David Booth was removed from the ice on a stretcher during the second period of a game against the Ottawa Senators Saturday night.

Booth was in the offensive left corner when he was checked from behind by Ottawa defenseman Anton Volchenkov with 15:12 left in the period. Booth’s head went flush into the boards and he remained on his back until medical personnel assisted him to the stretcher.
