Dave Strader At Home In The Broadcast Booth

from Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post,

He ducked into a narrow hallway, searching for the “NBC Sports Network” sign, then turned the handle and stepped into the center-ice booth. The door clicked behind him, and as he has for 37 years, he sat down to call a hockey game.

“For the four hours, five hours, six hours I’m here, I don’t feel like I’m sick” Strader said while sitting in a near-empty arena Friday. “And I don’t even feel like the last nine months even happened.”

Strader has spent those nine months undergoing treatment for bile duct cancer, and his battle is ongoing. After joining the Dallas Stars’ broadcast team at the start of last season, he was able to call only five games this year. But a break in treatment freed him up for the start of the playoffs, where he called the Capitals’ 3-2 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

He reached fans who have heard his play-by-play for the Red Wings, Panthers and Coyotes, nationally on ESPN and NBC, and around the world on the NHL’s international Stanley Cup stream. He is fulfilling the promise he made to himself in the summer that he wouldn’t let cancer define him. That he would not stop doing all he has ever known.

“There haven’t been many positives with his situation this year,” Stars President Jim Lites said. “But Dave being back in the booth again for the playoffs is one, for him and for us, the listeners. That is where he is supposed to be.”

Dave Strader Will Call Boston/Dallas Game On NBC Next Sunday

DALLAS, Texas - The Dallas Stars, in conjunction with NBC, announced today that Dave Strader and Daryl "Razor" Reaugh will call the Dallas Stars vs. Boston Bruins contest on Sunday, Feb. 26. Strader will provide play-by-play, and Reaugh and Brian Boucher will serve as the color analysts for the nationally televised game on NBC.  The game is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. CT puck drop at American Airlines Center.

Strader, who returned to the broadcast booth for the Stars current five-game homestand, continues his fight against cholangiocarcinoma, a fairly rare and aggressive form of cancer. His treatment schedule afforded him the opportunity to travel to Dallas and return to the booth and he called his first game in 283 days last night against Tampa Bay.  Following the Stars games vs. Pittsburgh on Feb. 28 and vs. New York Islanders on March 2, he will return to upstate New York to continue his treatment.

Video- Dave Strader On Hockey Fights Canncer

Dave Strader statement a little over a moth ago:

"With the start of the NHL season almost upon us, I wanted to share an update on my condition with everyone who has been kind enough to reach out over the past several months. In early June 2016, a tumor was found in my bile duct. I was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a fairly rare and aggressive form of cancer.

"There is no cure for my cancer. However, at this point in time, it is treatable. With advancements in all areas of cancer treatments evolving so quickly, I'm fighting every day and doing everything the doctors tell me. The Stars' organization, the fans and the entire NHL family have been so supportive. It has meant so much to me, my wife Colleen and our entire family to know that we are not in this fight alone. I will work as many games as my condition and my treatments allow. Thank you again for all your love and support."

Dave Strader The New Voice Of The Dallas Stars

from Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News,

Dave and Razor? Strader and Razor?

The new play-by-play voice of the Dallas Stars is Dave Strader, a veteran NHL broadcaster who has worked nationally for ESPN, Fox, Versus and NBC Sports Network.

The official announcement is expected to come later this morning but there will be no local news conference to present the new voice. Strader is in Tampa preparing to call Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals for various radio networks including satellite’s SiriusXM.

Strader spent the 2014-2015 season as the No. 2 play-by-play voice behind Mike Emrick at NBCSN. NBC says it will continue to use Strader when he has no Stars conflicts.

Strader replaces Ralph Strangis, who resigned in April after 22 seasons of Stars broadcasts, the last 19 in the play-by-play seat alongside analyst Daryl “Razor” Reaugh.

Covering The Playoffs

from Dave Strader at PhoenixCoyotes.com,

Hello again from on the road covering the Stanley Cup Playoffs for Versus.

This trip has been a true case of Planes, Trains and Automobiles for me. As I mentioned in my last blog entry, I drove my car from Glendale, Ariz., to Troy, Mich., before the playoffs began. After three flights to three different cities and several taxi cabs, I’m now on the train from New York City to Philadelphia for Game 4 between the Penguins and Flyers.

Last night at Madison Square Garden was a great playoff atmosphere. As I mentioned on our telecast, there are so many great venues and fans around the NHL, but there is something unique about MSG
