No Joke - Dave Schultz Doing Stand-Up

from Matthew Nadu of NBC Philadelphia,

Legendary Philadelphia Flyer Dave Shultz became a South Philly icon by crashing his fists into opponent’s faces. These days Shultz is still doing some heavy crashing—on the comedy scene that is….

Now his face will be used for something other than a punching bag as the Canuck takes a swing at stand up.

more and yes, the writer forgot the ‘c’ in Schultz…

added 11:52am, It occurred to me many of the younger hockey fans may not know who Dave Schultz is, so watch him action at about the 2 minute mark in the video below.  How fitting is it that Ted Lindsay is doing the color?

Hockey Player Turned Comic

From Kristie Rearick at South Jersey Life:

Dave “The Hammer” Schultz, who is famous for his time on the ice is now spending time on stage. This Flyers legend is in the spotlight once again, but this time comedy—not hockey—is his focus.

“I’ve done a lot of public speaking at events over the years,” Schultz said in a phone interview. “I would tell a lot of jokes at the events ... so I eventually took this comedy class in Philly and I ended up doing a few comedy gigs at churches and charity events.”

His act caught the attention of a magazine reporter and eventually comedians also took notice. Louis “Twitchels” Centanni and the Reverend Bob Levy saw him perform and asked him to be a part of their show, “The Killers of Comedy.”

“The Hammer” Reflects on Philly

From the AP via Sports Illustrated,

Dave Schultz was known as “The Hammer,’’ a nickname earned with a ready to rumble style of play that satisfied the bloodlust of NHL fans who paid to see an old-fashioned brawl.

He dropped his gloves, busted and bloodied some chops, absorbed his own share of jabs and could have written a mortgage check to the league for all the minutes the Philadelphia Flyer spent in the penalty box. One thing the enforcer of the 1970s-era Broad Street Bullies never did was put another player on a stretcher.

“Oh my God, no. Never,’’ Schultz said. “We didn’t really hurt anybody. The only time you could hurt anybody was with your stick.’‘
