Wings Need Helm

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,
Ask Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock how he can fix what ails his bottom two forward units and he’ll utter a one-word answer.
“Helm,” is Babcock’s response.
Unfortunately, that situation doesn’t look like it’s about to change anytime soon. The Wings will go into St. Louis Thursday to face the Blues once again minus energy-providing centre Darren Helm, out for all but one game of the current NHL season due to a mysterious back ailment.

Detroit, MI…Detrot Red Wings forward Darren Helm underwent successful surgery last night to repair lacerated tendons in his right forearm. The injury, suffered with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period of the Red Wings Western Conference Quarterfinal Game 1 vs. Nashville, will sideline Helm for the remainder of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Helm is expected to make a full recovery and return for the Red Wings 2012 training camp.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Douglas Weikert at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“I think he’ll play in Game 2 for sure. You know he’s been flying around (in practice). As soon as he got on the ice two or three days ago – I think it’s his third day now – right away it increases the opportunity to comeback just because of the fact that he gets excited about it and it doesn’t hurt as much as you thought it might and you get the brace on and it’s not as bad as you thought the brace was going to be, they’re all positives for us.”
Mike Babcock, coach of the Detroit Red Wings on the return of Darren Helm. Quote via Chuck Pleiness of Red Wings Front.

Detroit Expects Helm Back Early In Round 1
by Paul on 04/03/12 at 11:12 AM ET

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said center Darren Helm might start skating by the end of the week, or early next week.
“We still expect he’s going to be ready in the first round of the playoffs; not Game 1, but anytime from Game 2 on,’’ Holland said. “He’s done pretty good healing the last nine days.’‘
Helm suffered a sprained left medial collateral ligament March 17 in San Jose, when he checked Dominic Moore.
The team said he would be out four-to-six weeks. Game 1 of the playoffs is April 11 or 12.
“This is the longest I’ve ever had to sit out. I’ve usually gotten back pretty quick from injuries,’’ Helm said on Friday. “This time we’re going to put a little more effort into making sure I get back quicker.’‘

Helm Out With Groin Issue

from Michael Zuidema of the Grand Rapids Press,
Gustav Nyquist’s family got a nice surprise when they arrived at Grand Rapids Griffins practice on Thursday afternoon at Van Andel Arena.
The rookie forward had just been recalled by the parent club Detroit Red Wings. He’ll join the team in Chicago for Friday night’s game and should fill in for Darren Helm, who is nursing a groin injury.
“It was fun news. They just got in,” Nyquist said. “It’s funny, they just drove in from Chicago. They were there for a couple days and now I’m heading there again so they might have to drive back to catch the game.”
Nyquist leads the Griffins and ranks second in the American Hockey League among rookies with 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) in 30 games.

Helm Gets Some Offensive Advice
by Paul on 01/07/11 at 12:00 PM ET

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Darren Helm’s speed is a tremendous asset that enables him to create a lot of scoring chances. But sometimes speed kills chances.
The Detroit Red Wings want Helm to be more patient with the puck, like he was in the waning minutes of Tuesday’s 5-3 victory in Edmonton, when he made a nice move to shake off Theo Peckham and then snapped a shot past Nikolai Khabibulin.
“Being patient is slowing down a little bit, taking a look and seeing what I got, not getting too excited when the opportunity happens, taking a breath and seeing what else is there,” Helm said. “There’s been times in games where I’ve shown I can do that.”
The checking-line center has chipped in offensively, with seven points (goal, six assists) in his past eight games heading into Friday’s game in Calgary.

Finish The Job
by Paul on 09/26/10 at 11:11 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
The Detroit Red Wings rely on Darren Helm to be among the team leaders in hits, win more than half of his faceoffs, be a strong penalty-killer and pressure opponents into making mistakes with aggressive forechecking.
If he becomes a better finisher one day that would be a bonus.
Helm certainly creates a lot of scoring chances with his blazing speed. He scored 11 goals in 75 games during his first full NHL season last year, a nice total for a fourth-line center.
“If he can do that every year, that’s a real good year for him,’’ coach Mike Babcock said. “We’re looking for physical play out of him, penalty-killing and energy.’’

Helm Still in Disbelief
by Alanah McGinley on 06/12/08 at 11:12 AM ET

From Kirk Penton via the Winnipeg Sun,
[Darren Helm] leapfrogged an awful lot of talent to go from Grand Rapids Griffin in the AHL to fourth-line centre on the Stanley Cup champs.
“Guys that I’ve played with, they just can’t believe it,” Helm said. “... My coach from last year (Medicine Hat Tigers boss Willie Desjardins), he told me he can’t believe how well I played and the fact that I won. He said it’s just such an unbelievable turnaround from last year. I feel the same way. It doesn’t happen ... almost ever.
“My goal this year was to play about five games in the NHL regular season and just be along for the ride in the playoffs. It’s starting to catch up to me now, all the things that have happened.”

Youngster Helm Talking Like A Veteran
by Paul on 05/23/08 at 09:05 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun,
“I try not to think about where I am right now,” said Helm, a fifth round choice (132nd overall) of the Red Wings in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. “Obviously, I’m going to cherish this moment but I’m not going to get to caught up in it.
“Every kid growing up wants to play in and win the Stanley Cup. We’ve still got another huge step to make but it’s a dream to get this far.”
Helm’s rise through the Red Wings system is nothing short of remarkable.
