Darnell Nurse Ready To Go Even Without A Contract

from Luke Fox of Sportsnet,

Darnell Nurse doesn’t want to drag this out much longer.

The supersized defenceman with genes you wish you had and jeans you’ll never fit into calls his fellow Edmonton Oilers his brothers, his family.

He can’t imagine not joining them in Alberta in a couple weeks, under lowered expectations and heightened urgency, of stepping into camp determined to build off his best year personally and a kick in the head professionally.

The catch: Nurse, one of the NHL’s several restricted free agents still unsigned in these back-to-school shopping days, is the only Oiler without a job in place for the 2018-19 season — yet.

“No matter how long it takes or what goes down, I’m always ready to go. That’s always been my main focus: When the puck drops, I’ll be there,” Nurse said Monday at BioSteel Camp, after sniping on consecutive three-on-three rushes.

Ankle Surgery Will Sideline Darnell Nurse For 12 Weeks

from Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal,

The Edmonton Oilers were feeling mighty good, watching highly prized D-man Darnell Nurse taking substantial steps forward this season, primarily on the left-hand side of the Oilers third pairing.

But then came the last game in Winnipeg, where Nurse left the match late, and hobbled out of the dressing room minutes later, on the shoulder of one of the Oilers training staff. Soon after, coach Todd McLelland indicated that Nurse’s absence would be “long term”. What exactly that meant did not seem immediately or abundantly clear. Personally, I was guessing that doctors were waiting for the swelling to go down before they could get an accurate assessment. But the longer it took to get word, the more worried I became.

Turns out, those fears were well-founded.

Nurse will miss the next twelve weeks of action, after undergoing surgery to repair right ankle ligament and bone damage

Video- Darnell Nurse Sends A Message

from David Staples of the Edmonton Journal,

Many fans, including Edmonton Oilers fans, were upset that Nurse would attack Polak, who it turns out had little or nothing to do with Hendricks crashing.

I saw the fight differently.

First, from Nurse’s perspective, Polak had tried to injure Hendricks, so the motivation for payback was there. No doubt, Nurse went after Polak and instigated the fight.

But while many fans, including me, might hope that the National Hockey League came down harder on fighting and on-ice violence, that’s not the reality of the league. The facts on the ice are that the NHL lets all kinds of fouling go on and often the nastiest of fouls are only punished with a slap. In that atmosphere, the law of the jungle prevails. Teams that foul, play nasty, bend and break the rules and intimidate have a decided advantage. For years, the Oilers have been prey and not predators in this world. They have been beat up, banged up, assaulted and intimated. But new Oilers players like Nurse, Zack Kassian, Eric Gryba and Patrick Maroon are starting to change that equation. They’re going after opposing players for real (and perceived) acts of violence against the Oilers. They’re starting to intimidate.

If you watched how Mark Messier and Chris Pronger on the Oilers, you’ll know just how important it is for a team to have this kind of reckless and nasty menace in the line-up, especially if that player can also play the game.
