The Ice Will Be Nice At Rogers Place Arena

from CBC News,

The man who was responsible for the ice during part of Edmonton Oilers' glory days will oversee ice-making at the new Rogers Place arena.

Dan Craig, the NHL's senior facility operations director, will work with the team in Edmonton to get the ice ready for next month's opening.

The Oilers play their first preseason game at Rogers Place on Sept. 26.

Craig expects the large space may pose some challenges for the Edmonton ice-making team, which has to consider air temperature and humidity levels.

"There will be a couple of little hiccups along the way, but I think they're going to get it under control," Craig said Wednesday on CBC's Edmonton AM.

"That's always been the goal from (the initial) design of that facility, that it will be the best in the league."

So you want to drive the Zamboni?

From Men's Journal's Evan Grossman:

The New York Islanders, who are moving from their longtime home in Nassau Country into their new spot at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn this summer, are looking for a new Zamboni driver. And while the job remains open, Anderson is one of many whose resumes will conveniently disappear. Because aside from driving under the influence, crashing a Zamboni into the boards is basically the worst thing you can do while operating one.

"That would be number one," says Dan Craig, the NHL's senior director of facilities, who's toughest annual task if resurfacing the ice during the league's outdoor Winter Classic. "People don't realize how tough it is to drive in a straight line for 200 feet," he says. "And when you don't drive in a straight line, I'm pretty sure there are fans all over the league that will let you know about it."

A position that requires unique skill honed through years of practice, the Islanders aren't going to hire a random fool from Flatbush to joyride on the Zamboni between periods of home games. This is a task that requires mechanical precision, a steady hand, and a laser focus. Same as you wouldn't put a scalpel in the hands of someone with zero medical training, nobody's tossing the keys to the Zamboni to an amateur.

"In essence, you almost have to be a minor engineer," says Craig, who first learned how to operate a Zamboni "decades ago" in Edmonton, where they don't let anyone near the Oilers home ice until they've had the proper training.

Laying The Ice For The Winter Classic

from Mike Spellman of the Chicago Daily-Herald,

The trucks carrying all the equipment for the next Winter Classic are scheduled to arrive in Chicago this week. A crew of a couple dozen will unload and assemble the boards for a couple of days, clearing the way for Craig and Company to build 1 to 11/2 inches of ice before a short Christmas break. When they return, if everything goes according to plan, all that will be left to do is spruce things up and paint the ice. Even with a warmer-than-normal Christmas Day forecast, the refrigeration system can get the job done.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “You know that it’s coming and you try to prepare yourself for it, but then when everyone gets there, it’s an unbelievable feeling to see so many people enjoying such a great event.”

But Craig realizes there’s no celebrating until he gets that ice just right, which can be a tricky proposition.

“Natural ice freezes from the top down. Artificial ice freezes from the bottom up,” he said. “We want to make sure that you can’t have the top freeze before the bottom freezes.”
