Simon & Grahame Sign With Russian Teams

from James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail,

The fact that troubled winger Chris Simon and backup netminder John Grahame won’t be returning to the NHL next season likely comes as little surprise, but what’s interesting is that the pair have signed with teams in the newly branded Continental Hockey League (formerly the Russian Super League) this weekend.

Simon Disgusted With Pronger Decision

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Chris Simon and those close to him, including current and former teammates, are disgusted and outraged over Chris Pronger’s eight game exile that is dwarfed by the 30 games Simon was banished for following a similar stomping incident in December.

The NHL understands the outpouring of emotion and predicted as much, but will say while acts appear similar; the intent is what defines the difference.

Chris Simon Wants Respect

from the Minnesota Wild website- by Chris Simon as told to Chris Snow,

I want to leave the game as a respected player. I think I am that, to coaches who coached me, and managers who managed me, and players who played with me. But I know that’s going to take time to build back with the fans. And I know now, this is it. Anything else happens, I’m done. I know that.

Take It Easy On Simon

from the Star Tribune,

But Thursday, before the Wild’s practice in South Florida, Risebrough pleaded for the media and fans to “give Chris a chance.”

“This is a new start for him,” Risebrough said. “I called him [after trading for him]. You don’t very often get people as excited as this guy was. I mean, genuinely excited. This is a fresh start. Give him a fresh start. People deserve second chances.”

Simon Hears Booing At Home

from Greg Logan of Newsday,

Simon was booed by a segment of the crowd when he took his first couple of shifts in the first period, and there was no discernible applause to counter that negative reaction….

“For me to be effective and play the way I can, I have to be in the moment and focus on each game, each shift,” Simon said. “I can’t control what other people think. All I can do is work hard and play hard.”

Simon Back in Practice with Islanders

From TSN,

Simon will be eligible to return to the Islanders’ line-up against the Tampa Bay Lightning next Thursday. He has been serving a 30-game suspension for stomping on the leg of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jarkko Ruutu.

“What I love most is playing hockey and when it gets taken away I realize how much I love it. Ted has always been a great help and a great supporter. My teammates were amazing. The whole organization kept checking in on me and seeing how I was doing and what I was up to. I really appreciated that,”  Simon said after practice.

Simon Broke The Code

from the CP via the Toronto Star,

Cherry said on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada that he “understands” why Simon stomped on Pittsburgh Penguin Jarkko Ruutu’s leg during a game last weekend. The incident led to Simon’s 30-game suspension last Wednesday, the longest in NHL history for an on-ice incident.

“He broke the code, you never do anything like that, but you can understand it somehow,” said Cherry.

First Nations Chief Responds To Campbell Remark

via CNW Group,

OTTAWA, Dec. 20 /CNW Telbec/ - Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine said NHL Vice-President Colin Campbell should personally apologize to suspended New York Islanders player Chris Simon for telling reporters yesterday that he would be meeting with “drug and alcohol doctors” in order to deal with his behavourial issues.

“I agree with the NHL, and the vast majority of hockey fans, that Mr. Simon must be punished for this unfortunate incident with a Pittsburgh player during last Saturday’s game,” said National Chief Fontaine. “However, it was extremely hurtful to Mr. Simon, and his many fans, including those in our First Nations communities, to hear from Mr. Campbell that such behaviour is related to drug and or alcohol abuse.”

Report- Simon Gets 30 Games

Fan590 radio in Toronto reporting Chris Simon gets 30 game suspension.

added 11:38am, from the NHL…

New York Islanders forward Chris Simon has been suspended for 30 games, without pay, for deliberately kicking Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jarkko Ruutu at 14:06 of the third period of NHL Game #472 on December 15, 2007. Simon will be eligible to return to NHL play in two months (February 21, 2008 vs. Tampa Bay).

“Several factors were considered in imposing the longest suspension in NHL history for an on-ice incident,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “While it was fortunate there was no serious injury to Mr. Ruutu as a result of Simon’s action, the deliberate act of kicking an opponent with an exposed skate blade, especially where the opponent is in a vulnerable position, is and always has been a repugnant and totally unacceptable act in the game of hockey.

Chris Simon Taking Time Off

From Darren Dreger at TSN,

Sources tell TSN that the New York Islanders and veteran forward Chris Simon have agreed that time away from the team is needed to come to terms with his recent on-ice behavior and potentially, his playing future.

Islanders owner Charles Wang met Simon earlier today to discuss the direction best suited to provide Simon with the support he deserves.

Simon has been granted time away from the team to seek counselling, or any other method to help restore his career.

Updated 3:48pm ET: Confirmation from the Islanders:

Charles Wang:  “The actions of Chris Simon on Saturday do not reflect what the New York Islanders stand for. They were reckless, potentially dangerous and against our team concept of grit, character and heart.

“We know Chris as a respected teammate and as a gracious man away from the playing surface and believe strongly that he has earned our continued support. The Islanders are going to provide some time for Chris away from the team and give him the counseling he needs and the compassion he deserves.”

Still awaiting suspension news from the league.

Simon Stomp Will Be Costly

from On the Islanders Beat at Newsday,

Whatever reservoir of support Chris Simon might have had left among his teammates and within the Islanders organization has all but evaporated. His inexcusable attempt to injure Pittsburgh’s Jarkko Ruutu in the Isles’ 3-2 loss Saturday night was mind-boggling for its selfishness on any number of levels….

Even Brendan Witt, Simon’s closest friend on the team, couldn’t alibi for him. “You don’t get any momentum going when you’ve got to kill a five-minute penalty,” Witt said. “That hurt.”

But the one Simon hurt above all is Islanders coach Ted Nolan.

Match Penalty For Chris Simon

via the AP,

With the Islanders pressing for the tying goal, forward Chris Simon took a match penalty for trying to stomp on Jarkko Ruutu’s foot with just under six minutes left. New York had a few short-handed chances, including Mike Sillinger’s breakaway with 3:18 left, but the veteran forward missed put the puck over the net.

“It was a bad time for a penalty,” Nolan said. “To tell you the truth, I didn’t have the time to look at it and see the severity of it. We’ll look at it and probably make a comment on it (Sunday).”

Chris Simon: The Good and the Bad

From Michael Farber at Sports Illustrated,

Says Buffalo goalie Jocelyn Thibault, who played with Simon in Quebec, Colorado and Chicago, “Unbelievable guy [who’s] always been recognized as a straight shooter.” Says Montreal defenseman Roman Hamrlik, who knows Simon from Calgary, “He loves you, he kicks ass for you. Awesome. Best teammate I played with.” Says Toronto winger Jason Blake, who played on a line with Simon last season in New York, “Good teammate because he cared so much.”

Thus the case of one of the NHL’s most physical players raises some metaphysical questions: If Simon is so good, why does he do so many bad things? And if he does so many bad things, can he possibly be good?
