Big Heart

From Iain MacIntyre at the Vancouver Sun via Faceoff.com,

Immediately after his packed, televised press conference at General Motors Place, Linden handed over to the Canucks’ charity the $25,000 he received last month from the National Hockey League as part of a humanitarian award.

It won’t be Linden’s last act of community service even if he never skates another shift in the NHL.

“No, I don’t think that will stop,” Linden’s wife, Cristina, said.

“During my time at Nike ... I got to spend time with Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods,” Canuck president Chris Zimmerman said. “They are extraordinary people. But I have never met another athlete with a bigger heart than Trevor Linden.”

Join Chara on Kilimanjaro

From Brian Costello at The Hockey News,

The Boston Bruins defenseman will be climbing Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro the first week of July for the humanitarian organization Right To Play. And he’s leaving open a spot on his climbing team to be taken up by the highest bidder in an eBay auction. Check it out now at [eBay] and you might turn out to be his lucky climbing partner. Bidding ends on Thursday.

Chara is challenging hockey fans everywhere to raise $5 for every foot he climbs in support of his fundraising goal of $100,000 for Right to Play programs. Kili rises 19,340 feet off the plains of Tanzania. All proceeds from the eBay auction to join Chara benefits Right To Play, which uses sport programs to aid the development of children and youth in underprivileged areas of the world.

Having been fortunate enough to climb Kilimanjaro with my wife in 2001, I have two words of advice for Chara and his climbing partners: Poli, poli. That’s Swahili for ‘slow, slow.’

Kovalev’s Charitability

From the CP via TSN,

Alex Kovalev said making a hockey DVD for charity was prompted by his own heart troubles as a child in Russia.

The Montreal Canadiens star forward released a two-DVD set on Monday called “Alex Kovalev - My Hockey Tips And Training Methods.”

All proceeds will go toward helping kids around the world with cardiac problems.

Also on Kovalev, a story out earlier today in La Presse [French] and summarized by Kevin Mio at Habs Inside/Out:

Alex Kovalev could shatter some long-standing Canadiens records this season if he continues to put up points on the power play. With 16 goals and 26 assists with the man advantage, Kovalev is within four goals of Yvan Cournoyer’s record of 20 set in 1966-67. Kovalev is also eight points shy of Mats Naslund’s points record set in 1985-86 when he had 19 goals and 31 assists on the power play.

Luc Shares His Luck

This week, Luc Robitaille of the LA Kings will be hosting a Celebrity Shoot-Out—a charity event in Utah to raise money for a spinal care center there.

This is just one of the many ways Robitaille involves himself in charitable causes; not only just throwing money onto a collection plate, but getting involved in a very personal, hands-on way.  From Mike G. Morreale at NHL.com,

”Following Hurricane Katrina (in 2005), my wife and I started our own foundation (Shelter for Serenity) and actually went to New Orleans, picked up a bunch of families and brought them back to live in our house in Utah,’’ Robitaille told NHL.com. “We wanted to provide them a chance to restart their lives. But during this process, we realized that the people most affected and in need of help were the children. The kids were the ones at risk since they came mostly from poor families.’’

continued with much more about Robitaille’s various personal and team commitments to good causes.
