O Captain, Where Art Thou?

Pierre Gauthier met the media yesterday and his words on the captaincy were interesting. Gauthier acknowledged that a captain will be named before the season begins, and he seemed to praise, amongst others, Mike Cammalleri for his leadership last season. Gauthier also noted that the Canadiens had a better idea of their identity and, after last season’s playoff run, what they are able to accomplish. Personally, I wish people had probed more on the idea of change – after all, the Canadiens changed most of their scouting department, their assistant GM, their strength and conditioning coach, and due to Guy Boucher’s leaving much of the AHL organization changed as well. Gauthier did mention this and said it was normal when coaches leave for many different positions in that realm to shift.

Fair enough.

But why all the scouting changes? Gauthier was Gainey assistant for many years – if all these changes needed to be made, why didn’t Gainey make them? If Gauthier is the camel, what was the straw? The Canadiens draft record has, for the past few years, been fairly strong: no super stars, but many solid NHLers. Why make such sweeping changes to amateur scouting when this is the case?

Summertime and the living is easy

You’re a professional hockey player, it’s summer, and you have to stay in shape. What to do, what to do. As has been discussed on Kukla’s Korner over the past week, and on various other forums across the web, Carey Price has spent much of his off-season practicing his rodeo tricks, even competing in a cattle rustling event a few weeks ago. Quite the adventurous summer for the unsigned Mr. Price, especially when compared to the great Canadian traditions of lake-sitting, light swimming, barbecuing and beverage consumption – all wonderful activities to help beat the heat. This got me wondering what other Montreal Canadiens have been up to over the past few months - so I did a little digging.

First off, the neat stuff. PK Subban and Mike Cammalleri were part of a weeklong hockey camp for Biosteel, a performance energy drink Cammalleri has discussed as being a big part of his game. Subban and Cammalleri were featured in some videos that appeared via Twitter last week, discussing their strength training at length and, you guessed it, the importance of Biosteel. It may just be me, but the name Biosteel always reminds me of Power Sauce, the sole reason Homer Simpson was able to climb the Murderhorn (More on that here: Homer Climbs the Murderhorn.

Who should be the next captain of Les Canadiens?

Over a year has past since Saku Koivu left Montreal for the sunny shores of California, and still the Canadiens do not have a captain. Speculation was rampant that it would be Andrei Markov – but he was never given the ‘C.’ Fans then began to theorize that the future captain wasn’t yet on the team - but I for one am glad the days of endless Vinny Lecavalier rumours are over.

No, the Canadiens next captain will come from the current collection of players on the roster. We know there will be a captain, because head coach Jacques Martin has said so. Who’s it going to be? There’s a fairly strong collection of veterans to choose from. Let’s take a look at a few.
