With Super Bowl commercial hype gaining momentum as the NFL championship game approaches, Budweiser Canada is launching an ambitious campaign that it hopes will literally score with consumers.
The brewer’s one-minute ad Sunday will launch Budweiser Red Lights, replicas of the goal light that shines whenever your favourite NHL team scores. It has created a spokesperson, Ron Kovacs, the hockey-loving inventor of the Red Light who — beyond just appearing in the spots and teasers — may actually come to your home to install it.
The home version can be synced to your favourite team. It will flare and a horn will blare whenever your team puts one in the net, even if you’re not actually watching the game. It’s a piece of the rink in your home, or more likely, your man cave.

from an email I just received,
Budweiser is launching a new campaign this Super Bowl Sunday. You may remember the response from last year’s Budweiser’ Flash Fans ad. Well, this year, Budweiser is back at it and we wanted to share a taste of what’s to come. A hint: the campaign features the newest piece of must-have hockey gear that will help Canadians celebrate hockey’s most exciting moments.

Anheuser-Busch said today it has signed a deal with the National Hockey League that enables Bud Light to remain the “Official beer of the NHL” through the 2010-11 season. Bud Light has held that distinction since 1998.
Simultaneous renewals with Anheuser-Busch and Labatt, which markets and distributes Bud Light in Canada, gives the brand category exclusivity and a brand presence in-game and at retail across North America. Financial terms were not disclosed, but analysts put the figure at $75 million.
Sheesh. 10 years and $75 million and I’ve still never had the urge to drink a Bud Light.
