Bryan Berard In A Legal Battle With Insurance Company

from Julia Marsh of the New York Post,

A former NHL All-Star who played for the both the Rangers and Islanders is entangled in a legal faceoff with an insurance company over an $18 million payout.

Standard Security Life went on the offensive against retired defenseman Bryan Berard Thursday, filing a Manhattan lawsuit after the stick handler accused the company of fraud, according to court papers.

Standard sued to preempt threatened litigation by Berard, the suit says.

Berard got a $6 million insurance settlement from Standard in 2001 after suffering a seemingly debilitating and career-ending eye injury in March 2000....

Berard retired in 2009. But then in 2013 he hired an attorney and came after Standard saying he never should have had to repay the insurer.

He is demanding $18 million in benefits, interest and penalties, claiming the agreement to relieve Standard of future claims was a fraud.

Russia An Option For Berard

from Kevin Allen of Mucking and Grinding,

Unable to find a job in the NHL, former No. 1 NHL draft pick Bryan Berard is probably headed to Russia to play in the Continental Hockey League (KHL).

Berard is still waiting for some NHL teams to finalize their plans, but his agent, Tom Laidlaw, confirmed KHL teams are expressing interest in the puck-moving defenseman.

The Tampa Bay Lightning, needing a veteran defenseman, considered Berard, but then decided to stay with their current group.

Tampa Could Be An Option For Berard

from Lightning Strikes,

It is no secret the Lightning wants to upgrade its blue line. It recently inquired about Mathieu Schneider. Tampa Bay also wants to save some salary and O’Brien has a $950,000 cap hit. There also is evidence the Lightning is at least peripherally interested in Bryan Berard, who recently was cut by the Flyers but has the offensive instincts Tamp Bay covets.

Berard Hopes To Make Flyers Roster

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

The eye isn’t much of a problem. In fact, said Bryan Berard, he barely ever thinks about it, more than eight years after the sight in his right eye was all but extinguished when he was gouged by Marian Hossa’s errant stick.

“To be honest, the eye’s not an issue anymore,” said Berard, not long before finishing his summer workouts here in Boston and heading south with only the promise of a tryout awaiting him in Philadelphia. “It took a couple of years to get used to it, for my brain and body to adjust, but I don’t even think about it now. Not an issue.”

More delicate and irksome of late, though, has been Berard’s back, along with other niggling injuries.

added 4:36pm, from the Delco Times,

“Bryan has been around a number of years now (and) he has been a good defenseman for quite some time,” said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. “I’m excited about Bryan’s willingness to come here on a try out. It will certainly pick up the competition level of what is going to take place in training camp anytime you can add a player like him.”

Berard Set to Return to Islanders

From Erik Boland at Newsday,

The quarterback for a power play that Islanders coach Ted Nolan said lacked power in Monday’s loss to Philadelphia expects to be back on the ice tomorrow night in Pittsburgh.

Defenseman Bryan Berard took the point position on the power play during practice yesterday and said the injured groin that has kept him sidelined six straight games felt “100 percent.”

Berard has not played since leaving the Oct. 20 game against the Devils. “Today was probably the first day I felt 100 percent,” he said. “It’s been a little longer than I would have liked but I kind of got lucky enough where with our schedule, I haven’t missed that many games.”

Berard Just Wants To Play

from Mark Herrmann of Newsday,

His eye never will be the same. It always will look somewhat closed, a reminder of having accidentally been hit by the stick of Marian Hossa on March 11, 2000. He had looked done then, less than a week after his 23rd birthday. His mom, Pam, said at the time, “Just say a prayer for my kid.”

Berard never will be the big star he seemed destined to be when he was picked first overall in 1995 by Ottawa, which dealt him to the Islanders. But he is just fine, testimony to drawing straight with crooked lines. His odyssey says that you can get there if you just hang in there.

“I don’t take things for granted now,” he said. “I did have the game taken away from me for about a year and a half with the eye and almost [the same] with the back. I just love to play.”
