Islanders 30 in 30

NHL.com’s 30 in 30 takes a look at the New York Islanders today.  The introduction to Brian Compton’s piece:

“The time is now for the New York Islanders.  For a franchise that still doesn’t have a deal in place for a new building, it is imperative that the Islanders accelerate what has been a slow and steady rebuilding process and qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2007. GM Garth Snow believed he had assembled a playoff team last summer, then watched his top defenseman Mark Streit and power forward Kyle Okposo suffer serious shoulder injuries before the puck even dropped on the 2010-11 season.”

Devils Featured In 30 In 30

image

I will provide some of the highlights from the Devils portion on 30 In 30 from the NHL per Mike Morreale.

“The New Jersey Devils couldn’t catch a break in the first half of the 2010-11 season, even after the summertime re-signing of Russian superstar Ilya Kovalchuk to a mammoth 15-year, $100 million contract that took nearly the entire summer to complete.

Instead, they suffered subpar performances under new coach John MacLean, lost star forward Zach Parise to injury 12 games into the season, saw Kovalchuk struggle in the early going, and found themselves in last place in the Eastern Conference at 9-22-2 by the time Christmas rolled around.

It was around that time General Manager Lou Lamoriello opted to fire MacLean and rehire Jacques Lemaire in a last-ditch effort to qualify for the playoffs.”

True, the Kovy ordeal did seem to be a major distraction to the team. John MacLean also seemed lost in the shuffle of being the coach for that year. His attention was not entirely on the team as it needed to be, and the results showed on the ice. I had a lot of friends who follow the Devils point out the same thing. He wasn’t able to coach the team the way you thought he was going too. Lou made the decsion he thought he had too, and it worked to an extent. They didn’t make the playoffs, but they certainly improved. If Parise was healthy, they would have definitely contended for the eight seed that year.

Captain Anonymous

image

What is a captain?  “A person who is at the head of or in authority over others; chief; leader.”  What is a hockey captain?  “A locker room leader, motivator; a medium between players and upper management; a primary representative of the team both on and off the ice.”

It is a unique situation this off-season that all three New York City metro area teams will be naming a new captain for the upcoming 2011-2012 season.  The New York Rangers have the most candidates and are probably in the best situation with the most quality choices to choose from.  So, we will start with the Rangers and then look at the Devils, who have both the easiest and hardest choices of the three, and finally we will look at the New York Islanders who have the youngest crop of candidates with the most potential.

Rolston Was Hoping For A New Start

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Feeling unwanted and like “a sacrificial lamb”, yet still undeterred, Brian Rolston is ready to return to the Devils and do whatever is asked of him.

Rolston, 37, does not hide the was hoping to be claimed off re-entry waivers by another team, but knows his contract, which has an additional season left on it after this season – actual salary of $5 million and cap hit of $5,062,500 – was too big an obstacle, even at half price.

“It’s disappointing I didn’t get picked up for sure,” Rolston told me. “The fact of the matter is my second year was the sticking point at $2.5 (million). You saw in free agency this summer that teams aren’t really willing. I think they ask about the money before they ask about who the player is. It’s the economic times. It’s disappointing for sure. I was hoping to get a new start somewhere, but I’m just going to continue on here.

“I’m in no different position than I was at the beginning. I’m not sure if this is all necessary, but it’s the business.”

After Holiday Sale, Rolston Available For Half The Price

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Left wing Brian Rolston will be assigned to Albany of the AHL and placed on re-entry waivers, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said this morning.

Lamoriello said Rolston has not been assigned to Albany yet, but will be later today. He then must report to Albany before being placed on re-entry waivers, so the earliest he can be placed on re-entry waivers is noon on Wednesday.

Lamoriello said it was was not definite that Rolston will be placed on re-entry waivers on Wednesday, but it will happen eventually.

Afternoon Line

“It’s not a huge surprise,” he said. “Obviously. I didn’t know it was going to happen today, but I can’t say it’s a surprise. We all know that since September our whole team has been waiting for something to happen and, again, we’re in a situation that with the way the season has been going, it can’t really be a surprise.”

“I’ve been in this league a long time, is it disappointing to be placed on waivers. I suppose it is.  But I’m not overly disappointed. This could be an opportunity to play somewhere else. If not, I may be playing for the Devils tomorrow night (against Phoenix).”

Rolston Goes To Crosby For Ankle Advice

from Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,

Brian Rolston’s ankle wasn’t feeling as good as he had hoped.

Three games into his return from a high ankle sprain, the Devils winger decided to get some firsthand information about what he might expect. So one week ago, after a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Rolston talked with Sidney Crosby.

“I don’t know if his was the same as mine, but his was an ankle, too. It was good to get a player’s perspective,” Rolston said. “The first few games back, no question I felt it. I didn’t know what to expect, so I had a conversation with Sidney Crosby. He just said it’s going to be sore and you have to try to strengthen it and to keep taping it.”

Rolston Injury Hurts Devils

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,

Hoping for the best, the Devils are more realistically bracing for the worst on Brian Rolston’s sprained right ankle.

“It depends how quickly he heals. It could be a few days, a few weeks, it could be a month. I don’t know,” coach Brent Sutter said yesterday about the Devils’ most expensive free-agent acquisition…

Rolston Out With Sprained Ankle

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils right wing Brian Rolston left tonight’s 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers with what he said was a high right ankle sprain.

Roslton left the building on crutches with a boot on his his right foot. I tried to ask Rolston twice if he had an X-ray on the ankle and both times was cut off by the Devils’ senior director of communications.

Rolston Will Go UFA

The Tampa Bay Lightning gave it their best shot, but forward Brian Rolston is going to unrestricted free agency.

Sources say Rolston informed the Lightning this morning that he would become an unrestricted free agent at 12 noon and see what the market will bear for his services.

Rolston Update

from Lightning Strikes,

Perhaps it was just posturing. Perhaps he just didn’t want to give anything away. Or maybe Brian Rolston is so committed to exploring his worth on the open market, the Lightning is going to have to work like crazy to get him signed.

Whatever the motivations, Rolston’s agent Stephen Bartlett played it close to the vest Monday afternoon when asked how negotiations were going with Tampa Bay.

“We’ve had some discussions,” he said.

Lightning Acquire Rights to Rolston

From the Minnesota Wild (press release):

Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough tonight announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired a conditional draft pick in either the 2009 or 2010 NHL Entry Draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Brian Rolston.

Update 11:07pm ET: From Michael Russo at his Star Tribune blog,

The trade is done. It’s for a conditional draft pick with three different conditions apparently depending on whether Rolston signs with Tampa Bay or not. The conditions will be spelled out to me in a little bit.

Update 11:16pm ET: You can see the conditions for the pick at Russo’s site. They’re a bit (shall we say) convoluted, in part dependent on approval of the earlier Malone signing in Tampa.

Appears Rolston Headed Towards Free Agency

from John Shipley of the Pioneer Press,

The sides still have until midnight today (Monday) to complete a deal that would keep Rolston, 35, from testing the free-agent waters, but that isn’t going to happen.

“At this point,” Rolston said in a text message Sunday afternoon, “we are going to July 1.”

added 8:22pm, via Russo’s Rants,

I see Rolston on Sidney Crosby’s wing in Pittsburgh. I know Florida, Atlanta, the Rangers, Islanders and Montreal really want him, too. Tampa will sign Ryan Malone to a seven-year, $31.5 million deal, but that doesn’t mean the Lightning’s out of the Rolston hunt, I was just told. The Lightning has interest in Radim Vrbata, too.

Rolston Could Be A Good Fit In Montreal

from Mike Boone of Habs Inside/Out,

If the Canadiens end up blue-balled and spurned in their wooing of Mats Sundin, signing Brian Rolston would be a great consolation prize.

Rolston was in the final season of a three-year Minnesota Wild contract that paid him $2.432 million per. He’s probably available in the $4 million to $5 million range.

Rolston Could Be A Wanted Man

from Ryan Dixon of the Hockey News,

If free agents pitched their services on late-night infomercials, Brian Rolston would be positioned as the amazing all-in-one player who can take care of every household need before folding up compactly to be stored out of sight.

No fuss, no mess – just results.

Need a little defensive help? Put Rolston on the penalty kill and just look at that shine! So it’s offense you’re after? Good news; Rolston comes with a 30-goal guarantee!

Rolston Camp Silent

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

The Brian Rolston negotiations have literally stopped short.

According to Wild assistant general manager Tom Lynn, Rolston’s agent, Steve Bartlett, has not returned a phone call since last week. The Wild hoped it would jump-start negotiations Saturday by making it known publicly that the team had made three contract proposals to Rolston without receiving a counteroffer….

Via text message, Rolston said Wednesday there was “no news,” and Tuesday said, “I don’t think it’s over.” He declined to comment further.

Rolston Contract Negotiations Update

Now that the draft is over, get ready for more of these types of reports…

from Russo’s Rants,

Negotiations with the Wild’s Brian Rolston is at a sensitive juncture.

The Wild has grown frustrated with Rolston’s agent, Steve Bartlett. GM Doug Risebrough says the Wild has not received a single counteroffer from Bartlett.

Talks are in such danger of halting, the Wild has begun to receive and weigh offers from teams for the right to negotiate exclusively with Rolston, who can become a free agent July 1.

Rolston Looking For The Best Deal

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

Brian Rolston made one thing crystal clear Wednesday night: While the three-time Wild 30-goal scorer still thinks he can get a deal done to finish his career in Minnesota, Rolston is not going to give the Wild a hometown discount because he wants to play in Minnesota.

“They made me a decent offer [Friday], but we’re not there yet,” Rolston, 35, said in a phone interview. “I’m looking for my market value. What is my market value? I don’t want to state it, but I think we have a good understanding of what it is.

Asst. Coach Rolston

from Kevin Allen’s blog at USA TODAY,

When Brian Rolston’s family heard that the Minnesota Wild were offering players a mother-son NHL road trip this season they jokingly wondered whether coach Jacques Lemaire understood that his mother, Joyce, might view that as an invitation to do some work as an assistant coach.

“She has a lot of jam,” jokes Brian’s brother, Ron, who is a coach for the U.S. National Development team. “We were afraid that she was going to be telling Jacques and the players how to play.”
